  1. Wow. I had no idea TWL is such a divisive record. Quite frankly, I think it's one of the stronger, more confident collections in the band's career. It covers a huge musical map, but doesn't feel clunky or lacking. It's a statement about what/who the band is in that one moment, but creates an identity without falling into complacency halfway through.

And maybe this is me, but I've never understood folks dogging SBS. Again, I think it's one of Jeff's most honest, warm, and all-around most sophisticated recordings.

It's strange to me how folks sometimes mistake Wilco's biggest attribute for a flaw: you're never going to get two records that sound the same. You're going to get a more mellow, introspective record. You're going to get something more experimental and raucous. You're going to get something different every time.

Now, phew, all that being said, I'm super-geeked for a new record and really hope it drops before the end of the year.

  2. Granted, I'm still somewhat new to the craft beer landscape, so admittedly some of the 'whales' still hold some appeal for me. But I have noticed in the last few months my appreciation has grown for beers that are more expertly crafted than their super-hyped counterparts.

I think it's kind of like discovering what makes authentic Italian food so wonderful is the simplicity, the restraint, the care put into it.

  3. Bummer, dude. Bummer indeed. Even mellow chocolate beers?

i thought that Two Hearted was overrated. would like to try some Three Floyds stuff at some point.

3 Floyds makes some assertively hopped yet well-balanced beers. Plus, their hoppy wheat beer Gumballhead is one of my all time favs. Great summer beer. So easy drinking.

  4. Not a huge hop head, cards on the table, but my IPAs of choice: Sculpin, Two-Hearted, and 3 Floyd's Dreadnaught, which is ironic given that it's an imperial IPA, although perhaps not given the level of malt and sweetness to help balance that bitterness.

Seems fitting to ask about KBS given its release this week. I had a bottle of this year's version a few weeks ago and I managed to snag two more bottles today on my lunch hour. The question becomes: Do y'all think it's worth the hype?

  5. I've heard great things about The Brew Kettle.

If y'all have suggestions for beers to be featured on the show, check out www.oneguyonebeer.wordpress.com and leave a comment.

Or, hell, just leave 'em in this thread.

    Cheers!

  6. Man, I always forget how happenings things are in Texas in terms of craft beer. Real Ale. Jester King. Live Oak.

Funny enough, my wife loves sour beer and actually got into craft beer through sours, which always strikes me as strange given how many hardcore craft beer nerds have a hard time with sours. I mean, I love a good sour, but they're not for everyone.

Also, if all this beer talk is making you thirsty, make sure to check out the video podcast that started this thread: https://oneguyonebeer.wordpress.com/

Feel free to suggest beers as well, yeah? Thanks!

  7. I though Pliny the elder was pretty easy to get? I know Pliny the younger shows up in Colorado once a year and you have to go down to wherever its tapping as soon as they open and get on the list or whatever. Seems Like hype to me (kind of like the Pappy Van Winkle whiskey releases) but maybe its that good?

I was under the impression Pliny can be somewhat tricky to get. Not impossible, just something of a small trick, more based on timing than anything else - right store, right time, etc.

  8. A lot of beer talk on Via Chicago lately, which is pretty awesome. My two most frequented forums are  VC and BeerAdvocate, so it's fun to see the cross over!

For whatever reason I can't seem to utilize the quote function, but I'll have to agree with the above that Tank 7 is one of the best widely distributed saisons available! That and Ommegang's Hennepin are pretty amazing.

I'm very spoiled in that I take somewhat regular trips to Vermont for Hill Farmstead. IMHO, Hill Farmstead is producing some of the best beer in the country. Vermont really is THE beer mecca. Between HF, Fiddlehead, The Alchemist, Lawson's, you can't go wrong...

My favorite beers, as of lately, have been oak aged saisons, wilds, and sours. I've been lucky to get some Side Project out of St. Louis, MO, and De Garde from Tillamook, OR. Both are producing some funky, delicious beers.

Right? Craft beer and Wilco? How do you go wrong?

I have been dying to try Hill Farmstead - same goes for Side Project. Both breweries have such a great rep when it comes to funky, farmhouse, terrior-based beers, you know? Definitely bucket-list beers...

  9. Tank 7 is way too sweet for me. I love Crooked Stave and Funkwerks (which actually started distributing to Texas recently), and I always picked up some of their beer whenever I passed through Colorado.

Back to Boulevard though, if we're talking American interpretations, Saison-Brett is pretty freaking amazing.

Also, still on American interpretations, Ommegnang's Hennepin is pretty solid as well. A real nice dryness with those great peppery phenols.

  10. My new favorite for when I'm feeling fancy is Boulevard Brewing out of KC makes a farmhouse called Tank 7.  It's really stinking good.  Which is funny that I've become obsessed with a beer out of Missouri.  Denver has become craft brew mecca with a new brewery opening every couple months.

Anyhow, I like the farmhouse/saison thing.  It seems to be the perfect mix of big flavor while still being refreshing.  I like a big IPA, or stout as much as the next guy but sometimes they feel like "staying in and going to bed early" kind of beers.

OK, one at a time here:

1). Tank 7 may be the best American and easily accessible incarnation of a saison. Such a wonderful, wonderful beer.

2). I am a farmhouse/saison/anything Belgian beer slut. My favorites, hands down, followed closely by a nice stout or American pale.

They love it when I break my portable 2-keg dispenser out for special events. I guess I should start brewing some crowd-friendly beer for May's annual crawfish boil.

    Get to steppin', son!

Dude, as a homebrewer, can you tell me which hop gives off that chive/onion/garlic note? That kind of earthy, grassy flavor?
