  1. i read this this morning in the redeye, the free chicago daily paper:

"more than 30,000 chicago public school students are expected to pack soldier field from 10 a.m. to noon tuesday to rally for more state funding and anti-violence programs. students will be bussed downtown for the "shout-out for schools" rally. school officials, mayor daley, and performers- including wilco front man jeff tweedy, kid sister, UNI, and rich kiddz- are expected to appear."

  2. No blame from my end, I just don't like being told I have to watch out for you. I see Wilco GA shows in a whole new light and category of it's own. Those people up front do deserve to be there, they paid their dues standing in line all day................rain or shine, snow or sleet. I use to think the same way, it's a free country, no one own's that spot, but I was wrong. While I was at the bar all day having fun, these folks were putting in time to insure them a spot on the rail. I took from them what they put in a whole day of waiting patiently in hopes to have their place for the event. I'm not one to waite in line all day, but when I do, I feel I have earned that place. Only one time did I butt in line, but did in a considerate maner. It was Wilco last year in Columbia and I got there late and really wanted to see Dr. Dog up front. I explained myself in a manner that was rewarded and returned to my original spot. Wilco shows are different than many others I have found out in the past nine years or so. It's not Tupelo whiskey drinking music, it's adults and children alike wanting to share a musical experiece in a common way, band and fans for that matter. If I wan't to get silly and egg on a band, I go see the Trucker's who promote this behavior. I don't think Wilco promotes these ideals and at first I thought it was kind of lame that a fanbase acted so seriuos. I quickly learned I was stereotyping them they same way I was. No one here is the same, not two are alike by any means but do share the same love for music in an adultly manor. Please oh plaese come to as many shows as you like, hang out.....I'll buy you the first round. Stay on these boards, there is more here than Just Wilco, I rarely ever talk Wilco on VC, nor do any of those standing in line all day. We could give a fuck less about how many posts we have, or the grime on someone. Hell, look at the one guy who has seen more Wilco shows than anyone on here, he has fewer posts than you, and he's one hell of a guy. Meeting these folks have been great, and I model my behavior to respect their's.

    Sorry for the ramble.

i know i said i wasn't going to comment anymore, but this is very well put and something i think we all can agree on. :yes

  3. Hey, I'm not a mom or a dad.

neither am i, and i only like a few songs on that record, but she is a doll, i have to say.

i still love her in almost famous and think she carries off that girl group sound quite well.

  4. haven't heard KEXP but i can echo the comment that WPRB blows away WXPN

WXPN is the worst excuse for an "alternative" radio station in America. It's actually the most heavily formatted station you'll ever hear. They blow their own horn like they're some cutting edge, free-form station, but they NEVER stray from their tightly formatted playlist of 60 percent women singersongwriter stuff, 35 percent tired familiar oldies (steeley dan, david bowie, rem), 4 percent current male singersongwriter stuff and 1 percent actual good new music you've never heard before. and that 1 percent is probably a little high.

WXPN never takes risks, never plays deep album cuts, never plays anything remotely edgy or experimental, never plays anything with balls. it's music for middle-aged suburban moms and dads who want to think they're cutting edge because they know who She and Him are.

    WXPN sucks.

you obviously didn't grow up in a music market like the one i did in fort wayne, not a small town by any means. (at 225,000 in the metro area, i'm assuming we are/were considered a secondary market)

i had no choice but oldies, classic rock, country, talk, or top 40 until 1995, when i was a senior in high school. my attachment to oldies and classic rock to this day definitely is a result of this, which is cool, but i barely knew who stone temple pilots and nirvana were until '95. (and, so you know, i didn't have cable until about 1994 either, and mtv was already pretty much a waste already, other than 120 minutes, which i usually missed being that it was on at midnight on sunday night, and i was a straight-A geek who needed her sleep!) there's something wrong with that. of course, i caught up to a lot of other young people once i went to college, but i definitely feel like i missed something.

now that i live in chicago, i can definitely see that big cities have the advantage as far as radio goes. i love/loved WXPN, but i also think WXRT here in chicago is great, which i know a lot of people don't like for the same reasons you say you don't like WXPN. just being able to hear a beatles song, followed by the new wilco or spoon, which is trailed by a blues song is pretty cool to me.

all this just basically is to say it depends on your frame of reference, i guess. :cheers

  5. I bought one of those for my kid. Garbage. Take it back and instead buy a powered turntable -- you can plug it into the aux slot on any modern stereo. The old receivers would provide the preamp for the turntable. Now the turntable does itself. They have an O.K. available at target probably about 50 feet from where the Crosley was displayed -- they also sell one for about $150 more that has the software for transferring to computer/mp3. Best Buy, Circuit City all have decent models too, where you can set the pitch, decent cartridge.

Don't skimp, especially if you have decent vinyl.

i have a turntable component that is part of my stereo system. it has great sound.

i have a crosley that my dad bought me for christmas a few years ago. it is portable...fun to put on the floor next to me so that i can change 45s quickly. sure, the sound isn't as great, but many of my records are old and scratchy anyway, and that's the way i like them. the needle has held up surprisingly well too, if that matters to you.

if you want quality sound and have decent vinyl, then CT is probably right.

    just saying. carry on...

  6. Point taken. Now I can only see Wilco in KC and ? Anyone else drunk haters? Hey, shit, some folk have few chances to have fun, to let loose. I keep thinking back to the good old days when people got rowdy at shows. To me the good old days are the 90's. I really have not been to many shows in the last 8 years or so. When I first began to attend Wilco shows in 06 I loved the crowd contagion. It seems lately things are becoming possessive. Like in Lawrence, some douchebag buffoon claimed he owned a spot on the lawn because he was there since 6.30. Come on. You can't expect to own a 3' diameter spot throughout a show, whether there are drunks around or not. So my bud got excited during I'm a Wheel, a pretty fast fuckin roustabout song...makes you wanna jump and the guy got testicular cuz his arm was brushed and lost some of his spray on tan. And StL, I am trying to forget. The whole 'scene' started cuz an earplugger did the same thing to two different people. This was even more bizarre because we were right up front. At least the bunghole scene in Lawrence was like 20 rows back.

I agree, a drunk is annoying to the sober...maybe have a drink or two or ignore us and watch Pat?

i don't know. i'm pretty rowdy at shows and still don't get my drink on. :hmm

edit: i can't believe i'm still posting on this thread. i'm think i'm done.

  7. you would think SOMEONE here would have stumbled upon it and reported back if it had happened.

also, delaware seems like the wrong part of the country for the band to be in, seeing that the concert dates around that time were in kansas, texas, new mexico, colorado, and missouri.

btw, i used to listen to WXPN a lot during my lunch and prep period at work. they play some great music you don't hear a lot on the radio.

  8. is there something wrong with drinking whiskey at a Wilco show??

Ive been doing it all wrong then.

Loud singers are just idiots that dont know proper etiquette.

nothing wrong with having a good time as long as it doesn't infringe on the good times being had by others. (including the musicians, might i add!)

  9. I have examined my own feelings about this. I have heard other a number of women, most recently Pat Schroeder on NPR, sounding so disappointed about Hillary not winning the nomination. I have looked for the "It matters more to me that the president is a woman than any other trait" part of me, and it really just isn't there. I started this campaign season not really knowing who I was for -- basically neutral for Obama, and probably more of a Hillary fan, but the more I heard and saw and watched it unfold, the more I became staunchly an Obama fan.

While having a woman president would be nice, it isn't the only reason that any woman should vote for any woman. I would slit my wrists than vote for Elizabeth Dole, just because her politics don't agree with mine.

I am assuming that most dem women will "come home", and vote for Obama in the GE -- no matter what seems to be happening now.

Also -- if FDR had submitted his medical records, he probably would have had a much tougher time (though against an unpopular Hoover, Mickey Mouse could have won).

edie, i couldn't have said it better myself.:cheers

  10. I always hated summer session when I was in grad school. My students had the attention span of gnats, and my professors always thought they could cram a semester's worth of work into six weeks of a class that met twice a week for three hours. I still can't believe I got an A- in literary theory, because after about two weeks of hell, I just stopped reading. I guess it was to my advantage that I sat in the professor's blind spot. He apparently forgot about me.

    Good luck, beesman!

(BTW, I was the one in line ahead of you Thursday and Saturday)

i feel for you...lit theory was the hardest class i took in college. i don't think i've ever used what i've learned in that class since taking it almost ten years ago.

  11. Anyone listening right now to Night 3 over on Wilcoworld. Just so ya know....I am one of the beautiful voices at about 18:00 in (Hummingbird) when Jeff put the microphone in front of the faces of the two lovely ladies in front of me. And I need to share my after show story as well if you will bear with me. First off, I have seen maybe 25 shows at the Pageant and it was the first time I stood in the pit, and almost on the rail at that (thanks to Chris and Jen for inspiring me to do so). After the show I caught a drumstick...not the one thrown by Glenn but one that the drum tech through which is pretty cool at any rate. Went out to the parking lot AGAIN after the show and Jeff walked up to me and said "you look familiar, you have been out here after all 3 shows right? Would you like a picture?" I about hit the floor that he recognized me. So, I was pretty stoked to meet the band all 3 nights, have 3 posters signed which will cost me dearly in framing costs, catch a drumstick, and see some amazing shows. Thanks guys..now I am hooked on 3 night stands (one night stands just dont cut it)

:cheekkiss we had a blast with you! you can be our blocker boys any time!

i love your jeff story too. isn't he the coolest?

I just realized that in every VC picture ever taken I am wearing the same two t-shirts. Will someone take me shopping? Good Will.........anything!

i didn't put two and two together that you (who we hung with in line) and oceanman are one and the same person.

it was great meeting you! :cheers

  12. the shows were fantastic...the band was on, and the setlists were perfect. there's nothing like closing out a tour with lots of great, high-energy songs to leave your fans hungry for more!

i will DEFINITELY be back the next time they are in SL. it's a great town, a nice venue (though less smoke would be nice), and a great setting to see wilco play. (and this is coming from a chicagoan who is spoiled by shows like the residency!)

  13. I loved seeing you guys again. Some of you I hadn't seen without a ton of clothing on! you all look great undressed! :ermm

    anyway...wilco hangover here.

    On meeting the band

I just walked back after a while and started talking to some of the fellow fans back there and we were chuckling about somhting (maybe chunks) as I was laughung I turned to the person to my right and....

    Whoa!

    Nels!

And does Michael have the softest hands ever? Wow!

Then my wife introduced me to JT, that was cool.

I'm going to change my name to Chunks

    Thanks for that cathy

Saturday night was awesome! What a great show!
