I recently finished Percival Everett's James. I really loved it. The end was surprising and satisfying. Highly recommend.

I'm now reading Ken Callait's Making of Rumours. He was the lead producer, as well as the father of Colbie. I'm reading it because I saw Stereophonic on Broadway last November and he sued the writers. They settled. The book is ok. Not as exciting as I'd hoped. Callait comes off as a real 70s music biz dude in some of the worst possible ways, glorifying his excesses and sexual conquests. Can't recommend.

I read Callait's Rumours book a while ago --- I thought it was ok - he had some great in-studio content.

His book about Tusk (Get Tusked: The Inside Story of Fleetwood Mac's Most Anticipated Album) - really fits the 'glorifying his excesses and sexual conquests'.

If you thought his Rumours book was bad - definitely skip the Tusk book.

  2. Hoping to catch Sinners this weekend. Though the 5 yards of mulch just delivered may put it off. Just read that Buddy Guy has a role - the NY Times has a great piece with Buddy, regarding Sinners.

  3. Last night we finished up Adolescence on Netflix -- e-gads. A great four episodes.

I watched the show with my 15 year old son -- it was his idea to watch it.

After the first episode, I told him please don't murder anyone --- I guess I assumed it was already understood, but I just want to make it clear.

I have never been on any social media (other than this board and another board, I guess) -- so it is somewhat foreign to me. Honestly, I just don't get the point of it.

The show definitely brought out good conversations with him, myself, and his mother-- so that is good. Great performances by the actors, as well as, the director.

Well worth watching, even though it was depressing as all hell.

    Hello! Giant post incoming...

Winnipeg Folk Festival is great! My work flew me out to Winnipeg in 2018, in the middle of summer, before offering me a role out here. Going to Folk Festival is one of the first things I did in this city and I think it's a big part of the reason I fell in love with this city. Then when I moved out it was middle of December and that...... is a very different city.

WPG FF has a laid back atmosphere that feels very community grown.

There's a few things about it I would describe as archaic. Mostly the seating/standing rules. Most people at the festival have a low to the ground lawn chair. You can only stand at the "Big Blue @ Night" Stage (which is the party stage with a lot of indie rock acts), a tiny little sliver to the side of the mainstage at night (usually full of drunk teenagers having more fun than me), and then in front of the mainstage during the headliner ONLY. Last year we sat through a performance from Miley Cyrus' sister, who's a pop singer, so we could see Orville Peck. Security kept shouting down the youths who wanted to stand and dance, until Mikey Cyrus' sister told them to let them stand "it's a music festival!".

Otherwise, it's sitting for most of the evening performances at the main stage, and all the day time stages. Usually this is fine if you're seeing someone mellow but I saw the New Pornos a few years ago on a side stage and it was disappointing to be forced to sit. Folk Fest is a non-profit with a lot of people who have been involved for decades. I have no proof of this but I am sure there's a few old-timers who refuse to budge on this issue.

The seat of your chair can't be any taller than 2 feet. I have an extra chair you're welcome to. I also am in the market to replace my chairs as they lean too far back for this tall guy, so if I do you're welcome to borrow three of them. Otherwise Canadian Tire should have something affordable.

If you want to get upfront for the mainstage, there's this ridiculous thing called the tarp shuffle and a surprising lack of information available online about it, but if this sounds appealing to you let me know and I can go over how it works.

The workshops during the day are really great. In my experience, the performers usually stray from the theme forced on them from the organizers, but you can hear acts perform together and doing off-the-cuff performances.

Winnipeg in July can be very hot. Don't let the Winterpeg thing fool you! Bring sunscreen, shorts, etc. It can also storm. But storms won't stick around for long as there's no mountains so the clouds will just move along. So bring some rain ponchos.

Food is expensive but the dollar will be working in your favour. Lines can get long during the dinner hours, so plan strategically.

Are you going to have a vehicle? Be aware that even though it's called the Winnipeg Folk Festival, it's not actually in Winnipeg, it's about a 45 minute drive north. The good news is the park is beautiful. There's a bus you can take from downtown OR if our schedules align you're welcome to hitch a ride with me.

Winnipeg gets a lot of hate from the rest of Canada but I think it's a beautiful city with lots of character. It has its problems, yes, but what place doesn't? Summers are beautiful. I would recommend staying near The Forks.

Feel free to shoot me a message if you want to talk more!

Why does Winnipeg get hate from the rest of Canada - sorry - just curious. (living in Chicago we tend to get a lot of hate from parts of the USA)

We vacationed for a week in the Tobermory, Ontario, Canada in 2019 and enjoyed it. We happened to be there during the Civic Holiday weekend - which we didn't know going in - made for a crowded beach one day, but it was a hoot.

  5. I caught an Outlaw show when it passed through Tinley Park last summer. Decent show. I was on the lawn, so the sound was pretty crappy. Was one of the more interesting setlist that I saw him play. It was nice seeing Jim Keltner play drums.

    Stella Blue was a treat.

I also think the Rough and Rowdy Ways tunes work real well in a live setting, also.

  6. Wow - the thread has been dead since 21 ----  will be catching two shows in April in Indiana --- the A Complete Unknown movie really put the Dylan bug in my kid and he will be my traveling companion for the shows. Normally, the whole family comes along with me on my Dylan excursions and they do their own thing, while I go to the shows --- it's gonna be nice having him at the shows.

It'll be interesting to see how much time Wilco gets to steal the show each of their 3 nights on the Outlaw Music Festival. They really made the most of their time during the Americanarama shows. Hope to see some headline shows scheduled before/after but I guess this rules them out for Newport Folk Festival which I was hoping for.

August 1 - Wantagh, New York

August 2 - Saratoga Springs, New York

August 3 - Gilford, New Hampshire

I don't really blame the Outlaw gang - but surprised that they are not swinging through Tinley Park again ---- when I saw Wilco was going to be part of it, I was hoping for a Tinley date.

It sold really well last summer in Tinley.

  8. Watched Withnail and I last week. A great, funny film. Nice to see George Harrison's name during the opening credits. (he was a producer).

Just saw in Wiki how the actual book ended --- kinda agree with the director -- that would have been a too dark of a ending.

The two main characters were great - as well as the surrounding ones.

Loved how England looked in the film -- both London life and country life.

    Also enjoy Ralph Steadman's artwork.

I'm sorry for your loss. It does indeed sound like a rough week.

I didn't make it to see Philco at Sacred Rose. Curious what made it a debacle?

Thanks----- Phil set was pretty great. The festival itself was mess - sound bleeding, credit card issues. Storms passing through and canceling many acts (though they can't be blamed for that). Just disorganized. Which is why it was a one and done fest.

  10. Yeah --- my dad died this past Tuesday and Phil yesterday --- it's been a rough week.

Fallout from Phi Zone this morning while watching Premier League matches.

Think I may watch some of the 2015 Fare Thee Well shows later on. Glad was able to catch those shows. Musically they were not the best -- but it was great seeing them all up on the stage together again.

The last time I saw Phil was at the Sacred Rose debacle with Tweedy and Cline being part of the band.

Seeing two Weir shows next month in Chicago - w/ the Chicago Philharmonic to boot --- Weir mentioned how Phil got the band into classical music.

Just saw this at Citi Field. Great bill! Tre Cool is a freakin animal on drums!  Enjoy

Tre Cool definitely was great -- as well as well the rest of the band --- I can see how Billie Joe Armstrong lost his voice.

I thought the Pumpkins were great, too. Like Tre Cool - it was great to see Jimmy Chamberlin play - he makes it seem so effortless - yet the sound he produces sounds so great and powerful.

Seeing the Pumpkins play Wrigley was pretty special. Billy gave a shout out to how they use to practice at the Cubby Bear (a bar across the street from Wrigley) and said it only took 36 years to play Wrigley. Iha gave all the shout outs to the rest of the bands on the bill and did all the thank you's and such , while Billy stuck to his somewhat sarcastic self -- yet he was smiles all night - which was nice to see. The wrestlers were a fun bit -- I forgot that Billy enjoy that stuff...

The Linda Lindas were a hoot, too. I must of missed Rancid in the 90s -- though the crowd around me were singing along to the tunes. I didn't recognize  or remember any of them.

  12. Just finished watching the first two seasons of Babylon Berlin --- really well done.

Some of the characters/storylines are a bit of a stretch --- but it is definitely entertaining.

One gets the sense of the  'flapper 20's' nicely during the nightclub scenes. Really enjoy the music, through out.
