  2. I do enjoy 1A, alot  - big fan of Jen White  -- but they should have played a Tweedy sung tune, when they played an Uncle Tupelo song during the intro.

Thanks for posting -- I listen to the show while at lunch - but missed this one.

  3. This should be a fun/great event at the Hideout. Tickets go on sale tomorrow (3.3.23) at 10 am.

    CINDERELLA BLACKBIRD

A conversation with Lin Brehmer that started over 20 years ago continues today in the form of “Cinderella Blackbird,” an unfolding series of collages, poetry, songs and stories.

Join Tony Fitzpatrick and Jon Langford as they bring “Cinderella Blackbird” to the stage for a unique performance in memory of Lin Brehmer, a man who shared their love of music, literature and art; a man with the heart of a playwright and the soul of a poet; a carefree spirit whose deep appreciation for wordplay brought transcendence to the airwaves of Chicago; a man who reminded us that it’s great to be alive.

Tony Fitzpatrick is a visual artist, film actor and poet.
Jon Langford is a year-zero punk rocker, songwriter, visual artist and retired DJ.
Musical accompaniment and arrangements by multi-instrumentalist John Rice.

A portion of the proceeds will support a charity in Lin’s name.

This movie seemed a bit long, but as someone who unfortunately has personal experience dealing with narcissists I found this movie to be both powerful and triggering. Kate Blanchett absolutely nailed Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Kudos to her on a fantastic performance.

This past week, we watched this ---- I thought it was pretty great - Blanchett was indeed fantastic. It was cool what the director/writer didn't show --- the alleged past incidents that occurred. The ending was interesting to.

  5. I have a old Bose system in my basement, where I watch movies that I know the rest of the family wouldn't be too interesting in --- just realized one the RCA chord inputs popped out ---- I just figured Linklater shot Slacker in black and white.

Was watching a 99 Stones DVD, I got through 3/4 of it and was wondering why they decided to shoot it in black and white --- I then thought to look at the back of the unit and sure enough one of the inputs popped out.

Maybe I should re-watch Slacker and see if opinion changes...

  6. We finished all three seasons of the Inbetweeners -- what a great, awesome, funny show. It held it's own all 18 episodes.

Yesterday, I watched Slacker  (Linklater's 1990 movie) --- I don't think I have watched it before - but could be wrong. I can see why I may have forgotten if I watched it or not -- the movie did not do much for me. Interesting concept, I guess. But it just seemed way to forced. Too soliloquy, which I guess was the point. I did like the old man and his daughter who walked into their home while someone was robbing it. The whole bit worked. The film was nicely shot nice -- never been to Austin, Texas but I definitely caught a vibe - especially when the old guy and young robber were walking around town. Linklater shot that whole scene nicely.

  7. Larry Mullen, Jr. is definitely sitting out the Vegas shows --- be weird seeing them with Larry.

The press release also confirmed the absence of drummer Larry Mullen Jr., who had to undergo surgery earlier this year. They also shared that Bram van den Berg will fill Mullen’s role during his truancy.

“It’s going to take all we’ve got to approach the Sphere without our bandmate in the drum seat, but Larry has joined us in welcoming Bam van den Berg, who is a force in his own right,” added his bandmates.

  8. It was great show yesterday -- guess it will be streaming for while on their website.

I can't see Wilco not giving Brehmer a shout out at some point during the Riv run. Mary Dixon was out town this week, so she missed out on radio tribute and others. Part of her written words stated:

"I'm on my first real vacation in four years and will miss a [Sunday] gathering ... to share some drinks, memories and songs in Lin's honor. My request in absentia is Wilco's 'Box Full of Letters.'"

Perhaps they can dedicate "Box Full of Letters" to him.

WXRT played an out-sized influence in shaping my music tastes from the late 1970's through the 1990's.  Truly a great radio station back in the day. I gave up on the station and switched to satellite radio around 2003 when WXRT stopped playing new music and played way, WAY too much Annie Lennox and Dave Matthews.  That said, I continued to tune into to "Lin's Bin" - a weekly extraordinarily well-written oral essay that sought to answer mundane questions and was backed by great music selections.

I met Lin a few years ago at Fitzgerald's American Music Festival (one of my favorite events of the summer). We were standing shoulder-to-shoulder waiting for the last band of the night. I pretended I didn't know who he was and we just talked music for around 10-20 minutes. We swapped stories about a band we both love and were there to see - The Waco Brothers. Notwithstanding his allegiance to the Cubs, he was a damn nice guy! RIP, Lin.

He did write a nice  piece on the White Sox.

  10.  Lin and Mary Dixon were the best ---- when Bob Verdi was doing his bit with Lin and Mary, it  was always great, too.

My wife hates sports and yet she always looked forward to listening  to Verdi and Brehmer do their 10 minutes or so of sport talk.

    A musician's DJ, for sure.

A great pic with Jagger - both looking uncomfortable as they both should.

  11. Guess I could start a new thread, but my favorite show, while also running into Paul (and a few other VCers) was at a Tweedy solo show up in Fish Creek, Wisconsin in 2011.

The show was off the beaten path, so it was nice to run into people I 'knew'.

I am not much of a talker - so I probably didn't say anything, maybe a hello - I just remember pointing him out to my wife and telling her he goes to lots of shows.

That was a great weekend of camping and milling around town, after the Friday night show.

A great setlist, too. (I don't think a tape ever appeared, but I may be misremembering that)

    1. Spiders (Kidsmoke)
    2. Remember The Mountain Bed
    3. Muzzle Of Bees

    4. Open Mind
    5. Deeper Down
    6. I Am Trying To Break Your Heart
    7. Pecan Pie
    8. Hummingbird
    9. Born Alone
    10. Jesus, Etc.
    11. Bull Black Nova

    Set 2:
    12. The Late Greats
    13. I'm The Man Who Loves You
    14. Dawned On Me
    15. Gun
    16. Passenger Side
    17. Heavy Metal Drummer
    18. A Shot In The Arm
    19. Walken    (without PA)
    20. Acuff-Rose (without PA)

Can only hit up 3/23 and 3/26 since I’m seeing Neal Francis on the 24th but I’ll take it. I just wish these shows were at literally any other venue than the Riv.  Anyone have any suggestions for parking in the area that’s safe/easy?  It’ll have been 6 years I think since I’ve last been and first since I’ve moved out of the city so I’ll need to drive.

I have never had any issues finding street parking. You may have to walk a few blocks. South of Lawrence - in between Clark and Broadway - north of Wilson, is normally where we park.

Sometimes we get lucky due north behind the Green Mill or by the old Uptown Theater.  Other than Thalia Hall - I always found the Riv to be the easiest place to find parking.

I was there this past November and we happen to park right in front of Carol's Pub - about a 10 minute walk from the RIv. It was about two weeks after Wilco played there.

Also the Lawrence Red Line stop is closed for construction - not sure if it will be open by March.

  13. Nice play on words by Pat (or whomever came up with it).  "Brokedown Palace". This has been fun, thus far.

BAROQUE DOWN PALACE with PATRICK SANSONE
Wilco’s Patrick Sansone explores the use of harpsichord in pop and soul music through the 60’s and into the 70’s.

  14. Two episodes into  The English on Prime, definitely shot nicely. Interesting lead character - the whole Indian - US Soldier duality.

Also started watching the sitcom The Inbetweeners (British) - nice way to unwind down from The English.
