  1. This baseball cheating scandal is weird.  I get the punishment but it's interesting that it's GMs and managers who are the focus and not any players.  And it's too bad - I like Alex Cora but he had to go.

I guess it has a lot to do with the players union. Plus one can say a player was only doing what he was told to do by management.

I haven't been following it too closely until yesterday -- didn't realize they were using a garbage can to convey the pitch.

Below is a blog post, showing the how they did it, of course it shows the Astro playing the White Sox, Kinda crazy that the pitcher didn't go to the ump. It sure looks like he realized what was going on.

Of course, sign stealing has been around forever -- I do think using video is going over the line, though.

  2. It's amazing... Blue Note has been reissuing some of their best titles under their Tone Poet imprint.  Stunning quality and perfect pressings...all of them!

Just purchased Sam Rivers's Contours - it will be delivered tomorrow - looking forward to it. Haven't heard the record before, nor I have I purchased at Tone Poet release.

  3. I agree with lost highway -- Trump and the R's do not want Bolton to testify -- out in the press there has been the whole narrative of Bolton stating: “I am not part of whatever drug deal Sondland and Mulvaney are cooking up,”

  4. After I posted Garden show info - i looked back through the thread and came across the below quote.

    Nice interview with Derek:

Derek Trucks Reflects on Gregg Allman. . .

Has anybody reached out to you to say, "We're going to put the Allmans back together in some form"?

I've heard rumors about a show or something. If it's a show for Gregg and his legacy, that's a different thing. If it's anything beyond a show, I would think the intention would be wrong. You can't have the Allman Brothers without Butch Trucks and Gregg Allman. Those are just irreplaceable spirits. And you can't have an Allman Brothers gig without an Allman brother. I've heard people try to argue that you can, but I'm not buying it. If Duane's not there, Gregg certainly better be there. There are a few bands out there right now that are using names that maybe shouldn't be. That's another discussion.

  5. Hoping Betts decides to show.

Surviving Allman Brothers Band members Jaimoe, Warren Haynes, Derek Trucks, Oteil Burbridge and Marc Quinones will reunite on March 10 at Madison Square Garden to celebrate 50 years of the landmark band.

According to a statement, founding guitarist Dickey Betts will not be in attendance for this landmark “The Brothers” gig due to “prior commitments,” but the lineup will feature familial blood like drummer Duane Trucks of Widespread Panic and old pals like keyboardists Reese Wynans and Chuck Leavell (In fact, in the past, Wyans was considered to fill the slot of the late Gregg Allman before he joined the band.)

“Hard to believe it’s been five years since our final show at the Beacon. We had all talked about doing a final show at Madison Square Garden which never came to fruition. What a great way to honor 50 years of music and fulfill that wish at the same time,” Haynes said in a press statement.

“I’m so glad to get the chance to pay tribute to 50 years of the enduring music of the Allman Brothers Band. I’m blessed to have been a part of their story. It’s gonna be a night to remember,” Burbridge added.

  6. what did you think? I know one person hated the opener, but i think it's a cool pairing.

I have been seeing many of the members of the Joshua's band for close to 20 years - it was nice to see them perform at Thalia. I can definitely see why it was not everyone's cup of tea, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Takes guts to play one tune or motif for 40 minutes or so, esp. in front of an audience that is not necessarily there to see you. My buddy was kinda waiting for it to end, too - though.

The people around me started to rumble a bit after a awhile, but I have definitely seen more noisy crowds for an opening band. Hell, last month when I saw the Indigo Girls at Thalia, that crowd was extremely rude during the opener, so much that the performer had to stop playing and say something. All around, Sleep's crowd was great and enjoyable.

As far as Sleep - they were great, too -- it was a first for me, seeing a band like this. I thought all my insides were going to shake out of me, when the bass hit. Man...

Really enjoyed the drummer, too. The mix did not favor the guitar, too much - often it was a bit buried, but perhaps that was the goal.

I also enjoyed the whole rocket shtick prior to Sleep taking the stage. The dude in the white shirt and tie was a nice touch, as well as the two roadies in jump suits.

Totally glad I went - but I don't think I following the doom metal power scene anytime soon.

  7. The below Via Chicago link has plenty info --- Pilsen is great place to hang - a lot of good taco joints. The last time I went to Thalia, we ate the Honky Tonk BBQ, I am not a BBQ expert, but the food was decent. There is bar in the basement of the restaurant that is attached to Thalia - a nice place to hang prior to the show.

I still plan to hit Monday's show with a buddy and my brother.

  8. Below is the Chicago Tribune Night 2 review -- interesting reasons for not covering Night 1 - don't remember about hearing about a band member possibly missing the opening night. I wonder if this was another reason they pushed the XRT simulcast to the last night of the run.

(Per protocol, the Tribune originally planned on covering Wilco’s opening performance on Sunday. Two days before the show, the group’s publicist indicated a band member would likely miss it for personal reasons and requested we review another night to hear the complete sextet. However, the absence didn’t occur, and no further information was provided. Wilco played with its full lineup on Sunday.)

  9. I'm curious how others feel. I found it unlistenable when it first came out. I re-listened to quite a bit of it just now, same reaction.

I have always enjoyed the instrumentation and the background vocals --- I will be the first admit that I am a Dylan 'apologist' - but, I never thought this record was phoned in.

My 10 and 7 year old didn't complain this year --- actually I don't think they have ever complained about it.

  10. I am sucker for Neil Diamond, so I was kinda excited when I came across new vinyl copy of the below for $7 -- but it is completely dull and listless. Had to spin Dylan's Christmas cd twice to cleanse our decorating palate.

Also dug through my parents old records and came across an old Peggy Lee Christmas record from the early 60's, which was rather delightful

  11. hands down it's Elder. No one comes close for me.

Listening to Dead Roots Stirring now via Spotify - pretty good stuff.

Kicking around the idea of seeing the below on the 30th -- they are playing a small, great venue (Thalia Hall) - I listen to Sleep every now and then and they seem like they would put on a good show. Big fan of Josua Abrams', too - I am interested to see how the Sleep fans like Joshua.

  12. Ha. No! Not at all. Their original material had people moving around - semi-moshing, pogoing, jumping and shouting the lyrics. Nothing like that for Spiders.

Well that's good - I thought that maybe Twin Peaks fans really hate Wilco or something.

  13. Sort of interesting to see them perform their cover of Spiders (Kidsmoke) last night and the sold out crowd's reaction. It was the least popular of all the songs they played last night. Sounded pretty good to my ears though.

Did the crowd boo or moan?

  14. Crazy -- below is from Sun-times

Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy’s Northwest Side house hit by gunfire

The Northwest Side home of Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy and his family was struck by several bullets early Tuesday.

Gunshots roused the family shortly after 2 a.m. Tuesday, Tweedy’s wife, Susan Miller Tweedy, said in a Facebook post.

“You know how every time you hear loud pops you think ... was that fireworks or gunshots? Well, when it’s really gunfire there is zero question about it,” Miller Tweedy wrote, adding that “there were 7 to 10 shots fired at what sounded like right at our house.”

After twice calling 911, Miller Tweedy said, she noticed the family’s home had been shot.

“A bullet went through the storm door to our balcony and lodged in the wooden door,” she said. “In the light of day today [Tuesday], Jeff found 7 shell casings outside.”

Reached by phone Wednesday, Jeff Tweedy — one of Chicago’s most critically acclaimed musicians — declined to discuss the shooting.

Chicago police scanner traffic confirms several people in the vicinity of the Tweedy’s home in the Irving Park neighborhood also called 911 early Tuesday to report the shots, including an on-duty CPD officer. No injuries were reported.

Speaking to WBBM-AM 780 radio, Tweedy’s son, Spencer, also a musician, said the shots were “pretty scary,” but he did not believe the family was targeted.

  15. Yeah 25x5 is good one. I still have Rewind on VHS -- that was a fun one -- the setting was a museum with Jagger and Wyman.

Speaking of Wyman, I did watch Wyman latest doc - The Quite One a couple of nights ago -- well worth the time, some pretty cool footage. I watched it via Hulu - not sure if it streaming elsewhere.

  16. Just started reading that one over the weekend. Poor guy was stranded in SF immediately after Altamont, and the Stones completely stiffed him! Left him to deal with all the shit, and didn't reimburse nor pay him a cent. That's some cold shit.

The crazy "fact" I read in the Cohen book was that the Stones were back in their hotel by 9pm that night.

Cutler's the best thing about that Amazon Prime Grateful dead doc series. I'm hoping his book comes off the same way.

My library is bringing in Cohen's book in for me today - which should be a nice easy read while visiting the in-laws over the Thanksgiving weekend.

I guess it's entirely possible that the band were in their hotels by 9 pm -- I know the wanted to wait for the sun to go down before they played and since the show was in December I guessing the sun set by 5 pm or so.
