  1. I thought the same thing when I saw they will be playing Allstate Arena (Rosemont Horizon)...

Haven't seen a show there since the 94 Dead run and the sound was pretty bad (not to mention their playing was not that steller either.) I heard they updated things (the neil young show this past month was supposed to of sounded good). I must admit I'm pretty excited, haven't seem them all play together since the Terrapin Shows at Alpine.

  2. Going through the Grateful Dead 365 book by Holly George-Warren, that I got for Christmas. Basically a picture book. It has some great shots that I have not seen before. To mention a few: from the Fillmore East, Pigpen sitting in with the Allmans and one from the 1970 run where Mick Fleetwood is on stage clapping along. Also some paintings of the band members by Stanley Mouse and lots of crowd/fan shots that are always interesting. May be worth checking out if you are interested in snap shots like me.

The same publisher who put this put this book out, put out one for the Stones a few years back, that also has some excellent shots.

  3. Fun time last night.

The whole bar was pretty packed and all were in a festive mood. I think the bar scene was the highlight for me, but that does take away anything from Von and his band's performance, which was good. From the lady bartender yelling at everyone around me (in a good humor type of way), to the guy, who was standing next to me, who has been going to these Tuesday gigs on a regular basis since 91 or so, telling me the history of the area, about the players who stopped in over the years, and the family history of Von Freeman. One of the interesting stories by this guy was about one of the singers who sat in with Von last night who was one of Martin Luther King's get away drivers when King used to do his marches in the Marquette Park during the early 60's. Of course all this happening while Freeman was playing: usually chatter bugs me, but last night, in the back of the Lounge with all the regulars, made the night a very interesting experience.

Thanks again Lou for the Jewels and Binoculars discs. Listened to the first two this morning - a great way to spend the morning after last night's "history lesson".

Hoped you enjoyed the show from your front row perspective, I'll leave you the music review, since you probably were able to hear it a lot better. :)

  4. So I guess no one went. I would have been there in a heart beat to see Ken Vandermark and Fred Anderson since I don't have to worry about an early morning work rise yet! However, I am about a year to young for these stupid clubs age limit.

Have you been to Elastic? ( http://www.elasticrevolution.com/index.htm ) I am not sure if you have to be 21 to get in or not. They do not serve booze, but it is BYOB. Anyway they have great gigs on Thursday nights. Vandermark 5 is doing three Tuesday night shows in January.

  5. 30th works for me too...I think I will be off on the 31st, so I will have no excuse. Only time I saw, I think, Freeman play was at the Green Mill a good few Decembers ago with Peterson. It was great, but the Green Mill crowd where extra noisy and ornery that night. My brother was literally screamed at by a well dressed patron because he placed his drink down on her table for a second so he could put his coat on. It was good and fun to watch the two old guys blow, though. I have never ventured down to the New Apartment, which is ridiculous since I live down here on the Southside.

  6. Thanks for doing this. I was just looking at the Velvet Lounge line-up and they mention it there. Unfortunately Fred is playing the second set (the first starts at 9:30) and so I doubt I will make it. report back though. DKV rarely plays anymore so this is an event.

Sorry Lou, I did not make the show. We should start a petition to have these shows start earlier. I get up at 4:15 for work during the week, so it takes extra motivation to get out to see these shows, usually a show like the DKV Trio does the trick.

Anyway, did you or anyone else make it to the Hideout?

  7. Did you happen to go to this? Mats Gustafsson is playing in Philadelphia at the end of next month, and I'm trying to decide if it's worth the four-hour drive. I first heard about it because Thurston Moore is opening for him. I'm already planning a trip to Philadelphia in February to see Glenn with the Bang On a Can All-Stars, so I'm thinking I may have to skip the Gustafsson show, but I wanted to make sure I'm not going to miss something incredible.

I did not make it to Zerang's Birthday bash, but I have seen Mats Gustafsson play a half dozen times or so and he is definitely worth checking out. Is it worth a four-hour Drive? Its hard to say because he plays in Chicago a lot so I never had to drive that far to see him play. But if it was the only opportunity to see him perform, I would take a drive and catch him.

The Thing just put out a box set (((THE THING "NOW AND FOREVER" (4 DISC BOX SET))). A DVD is part of the set and Thurston Moore sits in with The Thing for a long extended tune. It is a total shredding by all four members involved.

Is Mats playing with The Thing in Philadelphia?

  8. A month or so ago Bt-Etree posted the Grateful Dead - 1968 Project. Since it was only in 3 parts, downloading the whole year was manageable. (my connection/computer isn't the quickest). The Mickey and Heartbeats shows were included in the project.

Though the set lists do not vary much throughout the year, I enjoy listening to these shows. Especially since i have not heard much of the shows from 1968 before.

The above is a link to a blog. An entry by Nicole Mitchell regarding Braxton is there, that is pretty interesting.

Listening to Berlin/Switzerland Concerts reminds me a lot of the Vandermark 5. I know Braxton is a huge influence on Vandermark; it's very evident listening to these cd's.

Braxton's contrabass clarinet playing in this set, thus far has been the highlight for me. I haven't heard that horn played very much (if ever) and it sounds great, especially on Opus 40(P), where he duets with Abrams.

Anyway it has been a very enjoyable experience, thus far. This box set will take a few run throughs, to get it all in.

  10. Saw him play solo on a small side stage at the Chicago Blues Fest about 5 years ago and was completely impressed. I always wanted to catch another of his shows but haven't gotten around to it.

My first introduction of him was on a Rolling Stones tribute album, Paint it Blue (House of Blues production). His rendition of Sway and Moonlight Mile are incredible. (the whole album is actually great). Does he play Sway or Moonlight Mile (or any Stones' covers) at the shows?

  11. Just got the set on Friday. Will start listening to the Arista stuff this afternoon. As a precursor to the Arista listening, I bought For Alto and 3 Compositions of New Jazz on the Delmark Label. Just one listening, thus far of both, but the For Alto disc is really great. The sound/production of both discs are also great - it sounds like you in the room with him playing. On For Alto, I also found it interesting that Braxton dedicated each piece to a person, something that Ken Vandermark does with all his pieces that he writes.

Anyway looking forward to getting into the box set...and when my wife is at home while I am listening to this type of music, I use my headphones. The music kinda drives her "batty".

  12. Frankly this may be all you will ever need. These albums are his major life work in a sense. Certainly you can collect a jillion albums by this guy, but these recordings are what he is most famous for.

Okay, just placed my order. You gotta love the Holiday season. You can always rationalize purchases as being a gift for yourself. Plus, we are supposed to be stimulating the economy, right?

But like I stated previously, Braxton was always someone I wanted to listen to more closely.

  13. I thought about buying this set when it came out a few months ago, since I only have one Braxton disk: it being the (Victoriaville) 1992 disk. He is definitely someone I always wanted to delve into to.

I am afraid it will open up a can of worms of buying a lot more of his stuff if I get this set...he has so many recordings.

But the set does look very interesting.

  14. There is apparently a Hamid Drake birthday party sometime soon also. For some reason the Hideout's calendar doesn't go into December, or maybe I am just missing something.

    I haven't heard about Drake's B-day party.

I did notice on Zerang's website that Zerang and Drake are playing at the MCA in a puppet show

    http://www.mcachicago.org/performances/per...tail.php?id=375. That may interesting.

Also later in December Zerang and Drake will be doing their annual Winter Solstice shows. I never have made it to one of these shows. Every year I say I'm going to catch one of them. Perhaps this year.

  15. edit- It is posted on Ken's website but no site. He has a killer European tour though...man.

The DKV Trio show will be at the Hideout - if you click Dec 17, 2008 on his tour page it shows the venue.

Tomorrow night should be another great show at the Hideout.

  16. How was the sound in Wings? I thought about going, but it has been so long since I saw a concert at Wings Stadium and I do not recall the sound being very good in there.

I was on the floor, dead center about 40 or so feet from the stage, and I thought the sound was great, especially for a rink.
