  1. 1) What the hell does 'Rock Chalk Jayhawk' mean? Because to those of us not in the know, it sounds like the dumbest phrase in all of sports.

    Seriously, dude?

KU's world famous Rock Chalk Chant evolved from a cheer that a chemistry professor, E.H.S. Bailey, created for the KU science club in 1886. Bailey's version was "Rah, Rah, Jayhawk, KU" repeated three times. The rahs were later replaced by "Rock Chalk," a transposition of chalk rock, the name for the limestone outcropping found on Mount Oread, site of the Lawrence campus.

The cheer became known worldwide. Teddy Roosevelt pronounced it the greatest college chant he'd ever heard. Legend has it that troops used the chant when fighting in the Philippines in 1899, in the Boxer Rebellion in China, and in World War II. At the Olympic games in 1920, the King of Belgium asked for a typical American college yell. The assembled athletes agreed on KU's Rock Chalk and rendered it for His Majesty.

    Teddy. Fucking. Roosevelt.

  2. ScarJo sold for $40100!

I scoped out the winning bidder "bossnour's" recent purchases. Since the beginning of 2008, this rich clown has bought three hair straighteners, no less than five pairs of Pumas, two tweed blazers, a metallic bomber jacket, a book on medicine ball exercises, a Corvette headlight and two distressed trucker hats.

Has Spitzer ever been spotted wearing a trucker hat? Is he a fan of the Puma?

  3. Did you clear FLAC Frontend and drag the updated files to it? Have you specified an output folder? That's all I can think of.

I'm pretty sure there are other decoders, but that's the only one I've ever used.

Thanks for the help, but it's a Vista problem...found this online

    "you can try this too:

Also for anything that wont run due to compatibility issues, change the properties to run in XP mode and set yourself as admin. Works for stuff like FLAC Frontend and mkw shn tool, along with many other programs that at first gave me problems."

this is getting spooky. I'm not sure I want to mess with the properties much less not sure how.

  4. That's what I was just thinking. BUT I'm not sure that I would call it behavior-befitting-a-penis, be it from Tweedy or Stipe or anyone else. In fact, I think the artist has every right to ask the audience for a little respect.

Agreed. But considering He did the same thing when I saw the band in Atlanta earlier in the year, I felt it was more than contrived.

  5. Interesting stuff. I've seen them live 4 times on 3 different tours, including their last one (at the Greek in Berkeley in Nov 2004).

I pretty much listen to their first 5 albums and then scattered stuff after. REM will always be my #1 band, so I am not objective at all. But their recent stuff has been boring which is the worst sin a band can commit in my mind. Personally, I think Michael Stipe's ego destroyed this band. Maybe they can regain some of that rocker mentality - looking forward to the tour.

I totally agree. The last time I saw REM was in St. Louis in '99. I wanted to open up a vein in order to get this show over. Micheal Stipe was so friggin rude to the audience that I couldn't believe it. "Shut up", "Show some respect and turn your cell phones off! I turned mine off!" and , "Listen to the song!" were all shouted at the audience during the show. I remember thinking, "what a DICK!" and turning to my buddy and saying "Brett...I think I am DONE with REM." Haven't looked back since.

Granted, I was really there to see Wilco open for these guys, but still...what's with the attitude?!?!?!?!?!?!

  6. I read that this summer. I just finished I'll Sleep When I'm Dead written by Warren Zevon's ex Crystal. Disturbing stuff. I've found myself going back and reading pieces of Neil's book Shakey. I read it cover to cover 5 years or so ago, but it is such a dense read @ about 750 pages or so. I love reading the parts about the recording of the albums.

I've picked up 'Exile' twotree times now only to put it back on the bookstore's shelf. Tell me I am doing the wrong thing! Tell me I need to read this book!

  7. In the summer of '92 I was stuck attending summer school in Lawrence, Ks. when I heard that 2 of my favorite local bands were calling it quits. Tenderloin came as a fusion from The Sin City Disciples and The Homestead Greys. This band was like The Butthole Surfers, Merle Haggard, and Howlin' Wolf all rolled into one. While all the hairspray-hippies in town

were backing bands like Trip Shakespeare and The Uncle Tupeloes, I decided to hang my hat on Tenderloin. ...Then again, I was on acid for much of the early 90's.

An entertaining article of their history can be found here if anyone remembers these guys and is feeling nostalgic. I believe you can still pick up their albums on Amazon for like 64 cents. Well worth it.
