  1. Been awhile. How's everybody been?

Looking forward to the Cain's Sunday night. Because Wilco visits to Oklahoma are special occasions, I was able to get a pass from the Mrs. on Mother's Day (and it didn't hurt that Monday is my bday) and will be trekking over on the turnpike in eager anticipation.

    Who's with me?

    :cheers

  2. Many of you will recall this event from a few years back ...

I'll always have a fond memory from Wichita in '06 when Jeff took my camera as the band came back onstage for an encore ... I was in the front row and had been alternating between rocking out and politely photographing all night ... As he headed back on stage, Jeff saw me take a photo of some friends we'd met at the OKC show (the only time I turned my flash on b/c it was dark) ... Walking up to the front of the stage Jeff said, "Did you want to be in that shot?" ... Holy crap! ... I turned as Jeff reached out for the camera. I thought he was gonna confiscate it, as he acted like he was going to set it atop one of the amps (we've all heard how legendary those Tweedy tantrums can be) ... instead he turned, smiled to show he was just kidding and aimed the camera for a group shot of the giddy crowd. He handed the camera back to me as I grinned ear to ear.

    Another fan captured the moment.

After the show, we waited in line to get an autograph and I told him he had me scared for a second. He chuckled and apologized for freaking me out. From what I've seen after shows, Jeff's always been very receptive to fans. (Now the next night some yahoo in Springfield, Mo. jumped on stage and tried to hug Tweedy before Jeff decapitated him, but I wasn't there for that ...)

On to the main subject of the thread, I see the need to control the annoying nature of cell phone cameras, LEDs, and the like, but I'm afraid unless they ban every portable device, this is the brave new world we live in. The way technology has exploded (even since 2006), cameras are everywhere. The fans who continue to use flash and disrespect others may ruin it for the rest of us, though. However, I realize that they just want to capture the memories and I think a majority are completely unaware of their breach of concert etiquette, and yes there is such a thing, even in rock 'n roll.

I'm a fan who loves the music but I am probably more of a visual person, where the image and sound of a concert are inextricably woven. As "just a fan" who takes photos as a hobby, I am in awe of pro photographers mentioned before like Harris, Orlic and Wireman, and I always look forward to their amazing galleries on WilcoWorld ... but I truly appreciate the opportunity to capture and share my own memories from shows where those "big city" guys will likely never be, places like Wichita, Tulsa, OKC, etc. -- venues that aren't like the Vic or the Chicago Theater. Likewise, I love to see what other magical moments have been captured by other fans around the country/world.

One thing I've always liked about Tweedy and Co. has been their loyalty to the fans, to tapers, photographers, etc. ... Hopefully there can be compromises down the road on this situation.

    Okay, there's my 2 cents.

    :cheers

P.S. I work in the sports industry and I think it's funny to see how there have historically been bans on cameras at major sporting events/venues, yet during the NCAA Final Four when you watch the "One Shining Moment" video, take note of the hundreds of flashes popping during the tip-off of the championship game ... apparently more than a few fans didn't get that memo.

Also, I'm addicted to ellipses ...

  3. I saw a rig behind me near the middle of the venue. Looking forward to hearing this show again.

    That was Phil Busteed.

Here's the show in MP3 format, taken from iTunes. If you're on a Mac, just put the files in your iTunes Music Library ...

    ENJOY!

Some funny banter during Hummingbird (Sharpies, PowerPoint and more!)

I'll try and get the FLAC version for those of you with more acute hearing. Here's the equipment he was using: Recorded by Phil Busteed using AKG C480 with CK63 (Hypercardoid capsule) >> Silver clad XLR mic cables >> Fostex FR-2 @ 24/48 ... using Audacity to dither the recording to 16/48 (CD quality) and track out the recording in CDwav editor.

  4. doubtful.. i didn't see any rigs. i don't even know if the coca-cola center allows taping. not a lot of tapers in oklahoma either..

I talked to two guys who taped it. One said he had to use a Jedi mind trick on security to get his gear in the door, but was ultimately successful.

    Hopefully these will surface soon.

  5. Finally got my photos uploaded.

    Wilco concert pics

I took my trusty "sidearm" (Sony H7 camera) along with me to the show ... Didn't want to take my big DSLR as it would be pretty bulky in the audience and I didn't think they'd let me in with it anyway. In any case, the H7 is not the greatest for low light (pretty grainy), but it has a decent zoom. I was about 3-5 rows back from the stage and was partially obstructed by other fans, so I didn't get the best shots. A few turned out okay.

It was a good opportunity to try and work on composition though, and just practice ... and rock out!

We were right in front of Pat and he did his utmost to put on a great show for us.

He and Nels were nice enough to come out by the bus afterward and take some pics and sign some souvenirs.

    :cheers

  6. Here are some sweet, sweet photos a gentleman named Tom Spanier got from the front row last night ... I'm jealous. He took his Nikon D300 and was in prime position. Not sure if Tom's on VC or not, but kudos to you, sir!

I didn't get there quite as early and was a few rows back on the other side in front of Pat/John (and behind some rather tall people) and got some okay stuff ... I will try to cull through my images and post my own at some point soon.

  7. I'll be there.

By the way, does your signature line just happen to be your favorite lyric or is it referring to the Boise State Fiesta Bowl game? As a Pokes fan, I'm hoping it's the latter.

Well, I've dug the line since I first heard it and its use as my sig line pre-dates the OU-Boise classic ... but as you mentioned, it also fits with that epic game.

Hopefully this year OSU will have some of our own BCS highlights to enjoy!

  8. Outdoor downtown Tulsa venue was chilly and breezy, but not bad. Crowd was smaller than I thought, more laid back ... but many were singing along. Probably converted a few new fans as well.

At one point, Rhett's monitor starting smoking. A roadie replaced it before it got worse. Some sound issues throughout the show here and there, but nothing too serious. Hey, it's rock and roll. Rhett flubbed some verses (like in Question and a couple other songs I recall), but again -- it's rock and roll. That's what makes it fun.

Hopefully somebody will post a set-list or maybe some youtubes from the show.

Said hey to Rhett afterwards (after his female fans let him go) and shook Ken's hand and told him thanks for coming. Ken hung out in the hotel lobby for awhile talking to a youngster and his mom, presumably giving advice on playing guitar, etc. Kid really lit up talking to him.

Highlights on the night for me:

    1. Chatting with Murry before the show. (As nice as you could imagine.) Murry was sporting a "Don't Hate the 918" jacket. (918 is Tulsa's area code.)

    2. Chatting with Philip after the show. (Ditto)

    3. Cover of Driver 8 by R.E.M. (hint: from a reliable source, this may not be the last you hear of this cover trend this summer ...)

    4. Everything else.

    :cheers

Here's a link to my photo gallery ... LINKY

  9. Ask Christine & Kidsmoke ... they are experts at this. If you are lucky, you might even get a photo op afterward with band members and your cute offspring. :thumbup

I told my twin girls they can go to a Wilco show with me when they are 10 (just 1.5 years away :blink) ... By then, I figure they'll have heard most of what could possibly be uttered during stage banter or by drunk crowd members. As of now, I'm still muting certain PG-13 lyrics ... Also, they'd be taller than the rail (maybe).

Earplugs will be mandatory. (My ears are still ringing from an Old 97s show Sat. night in Tulsa and it wasn't even that loud.)

Outdoor shows would seem more fun and kid-friendly and would allow some reprieve from the tighter crowds that can pack into smaller venues. Plus, they are usually less smoky.

  10. There are some totally different choruses in the middle of the live "Sonny Feeling" that came out a while back ... interesting.

(And it's Rotterdam, not Amsterdam, in the live one.)
