  1. I agree with about everything here. With a new little one at home my wife got me a pair of Sennheiser HD 595 for christmas. They sound fantastic and I have thoroughly enjoyed them. Most of my listening at home is to vinyl and I have got to say that it is very hard to beat the Klipsch Quartets I have. They were being discontinued in 1996 (I think) and I got them at great price. Anyway, I have been looking at new speakers for years, but just haven't been able to get rid of them. I think its the combination of the horn drivers and the passive woofer, I don't know.

I digress....the sennheiser headphones are fantastic and a lot of fun to listen to music on.

  2. I keep an ever rotating stack of vinyl out by the stereo and right now that stack includes the following:

    Undertones-"self-titled"

    Big Star - "#1 Record"

    Dr. Dog - "Fate"

    Cheap Trick -"self-titled"

Aretha Franklin - "Live at the Fillmore West"

    MMJ - "At Dawn"

    The Byrds - "Farther Along"

    Prince - "Dirty Mind"

Smokey Robinson and The Miracles - "Away We A Go-Go"

    Wilco - "Being There"

Mott The Hoople - "R'N'R Queen"

Neil Young - "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere"

Sharon Jones and the DapKings - "Naturally"

The Rip Offs - "Got A Record"

    The Temptations - "Puzzle People"

Use the same system. My wife surprised me with Sennheiser HD595s for Christmas (as much a present for her and our new addition as me, me thinks) and I've been moving through that rotation pretty good the past two nights. Right now:

Derek and the Dominoes - "Layla"

    Catfish Haven - "Devastator"

    Fleet Floxes - "

Otis Redding - "At the Whiskey a Go Go"

    Elvis - "Christmas Album"

Neil Young - Massey Hall 1971

The Band - "Music from the Big Pink"

    The band - "the Band"

Faces - "Nod is as good as a Wink"

    John Lennon - "Imagine"

Blue Mountain - "Midnight in MS"

Cat Power - "Dark end of the Street"

Elton John Band Featuring John Lennon and the Muscle Shoals Horns

Van Morrison Recorded in Concert in Los Angeles and London

Delta Spirit - "Ode to Sunshine"

    DBT - "The Dirty South"

    Calexico - "Carried to Dust"

    Whiskeytown - "Strangers Alamanac"

    U2 - "War"

DBT - "Brighter than Creations Dark"

    Dexateens - "Hardwire Healing"

    Alejandro Escovedo - "Real Animal"

    Traveling Wilbury's Box Set

Needless to say, Twist and Shout and all the new vinyl out there is something I have to be very careful of as far as our budget goes. One of my projects today is trying to figure out the digital transfer from my Project Phono Box II USB Pre-amp. Have audacity loaded and LAME codec, but can't seem to get the input levels right?

    Cool thread topic.

  3. Good chance to plug Oxfod American. Amazing magazine, that I believe is a quarterly now. Anyway, the Southern Music edition is always great (out on stands now, picture of the Killer on the cover, 10th anniversary edition and comes with two great CD's) and is how I found out about MMJ. This had to be 2000, and could have been before. Been enjoying their stuff ever since!

Agreed Sooie! Of course, I misspell the title if a magazine about great southern writing. Ouch!

  5. I do agree a lot of teams have caught up, there are what like 15-20 jobs where a coach can win a national title, maybe 25? I think TN is one of those jobs, they can get the horses but I agree its not as good of a job as it was in the 90's or even early this decade, how LSU and Georgia were not better sooner I have no idea

Just to throw my 2 cents on this. In the 80's and 90's alot of the SEC/National Power houses were cherry picking the best players out of Louisiana, MS, and Georgia. When Saban came to LSU that was the first thing he told all of his assistant coaches, lock up the state and try to get a handful of national recruits. Basically the formula LSU has continued to use.

Its my understanding that High School football in Tenn is no where near the level that is is in TX, MS, LA, AL, and FLA; and I have read that Tenn's inability to cherry pick from these states is one of the main reasons their program is in the state it is.

    Again, my 2 cents...

  6. We had no problem with the pimps but I've heard differing stories about being in the stands with them. Of course, everyone says we have the worst fans, so who knows what to believe.

Good luck this weekend with the Dawgs. I think I'll have to root for LSU on this one.

I think you can go to every SEC fan base and ask them and get a differing opinion on who the "worst" fans are. I have never had nothing but fun at the games I've gone to at other stadiums. Good buddy of mine went to the SC game and had a wonderful time!

Thanks for good luck vibes and for rooting for the good guys this weekend!

  7. Congrats on your win. You guys had the better team Saturday night. Maybe one day our team will understand that a football game has 4 quarters. We still had fun despite the loss. My friend and I encountered the famous LSU Pimp brigade walking to our tailgate spot. They were really nice to us, but that may have been because my friend was wearing a purple shirt (not sure what she was thinking there). She soon covered it up with her fleece jacket.

We've had problems with our o-line all season, even against teams like Wofford and UAB. I think the Express Package confused our offense. You mean less than 50 yards rushing, right? Yeah we basically have no RB. Spurrier had planned to let Baker get more playing time, but you saw what happened to him in the first half.

I guess that was classy of Miles to take a knee at the end, but not sure why he had to call a time out to prolong our agony.

Appreciate it! That is one thing I've really noticed since Les Miles has been at LSU, is we really play the whole game. I would love to see the number of comebacks we've had in the 4th quarter. Tommy Moffett, strength and conditioning coach, deserves as much or more of the credt actually.

The LSU Pimps are pretty obnoxious, but they don't mean any harm and don't usually bother anyone. They do that for one away game a year. Glad they were nice to ya'll. tried to find the official box score, but this is the best i could do real quick: Post Game article SC had like -13 rushing yards in the second half and only 42 yards total.

Again, great game and gald you had a good time. Think this 2:30 LSU UGA game should be a pretty good one!

Enjoy your off week, those are usually my favorite!

  8. We saw a good bit of the Clemson game before we had to head to the stadium and listened to the rest of it in the car. First half was not pretty for Clemson. I really couldn't watch it objectively because my brother and his friends were too busy making fun of Dabo.

    Did you happen to see

? From where I was sitting, it looked like Garcia just kind of ran into the ref but this video makes it look like the ref threw a forearm! WTH?

They replayed it twice on TV, and I told my wife I thought the ref made have forgot where he was for a second and decided to re-live the glory days. He threw a forearm no doubt about it. He may have been protecting himself add just reacted, but it was a forearm. Same ref blocked our linebacker on ya'lls first score. He still was beat, but may have caught him if that ref didn't throw such a good block.

Thought it was a very hard fought game and was impressed with SC. Was really impressed with LSU's D in the second half. Sounds like you feel your o line is a little suspect, so maybe I shouldn't feel so good, but

The crowd looked great and into it on TV, exciting game. I've also got to say that i was pretty proud of Miles for taking a knee at the end of the game. There is a certain ex-florida coach that wasn't too fond of doing that, and LSU was on the bad end of a couple of those games. Now that I think about it, the current FLA coach is the same way.

Anyway, sounds like you got to see a great game. Hope you had a good time. I'm pretty excited about my trip to New Orleans and Tiger Stadium this coming weekend for the LSU Georgia Game

  9. You ever post (or at least read) over on LSU's Rivals message board? Those folks will tell you that in a heartbeat. :lol No matter how "bad" a team is in the SEC, still tough to come out with a road victory and with Steve Taneyhill as our QB you never knew what to expect. Not to mention, I think we'd only beaten you once in our history at that point.

I have no idea what our record was in 1994 but I'd guess we won at least 6 games because we won our first bowl game that season.

HA...I don't post over there but check it out every once in a while. Pretty fanatical! Agreed on how tough the SEC is, those were just the very lean years for LSU fans....very lean! Good luck this weekend! Hope its a great game and we can both stay healthy!

  10. That will definitely be an interesting game this year, with Clemson's coaching change and both teams' QB situation. Hopefully Garcia will be performing like a stud by then though!

As for Saturday's game, I'm not predicting a win for us by any means, although there are tons of Gamecock fans who are. I prefer to leave well enough alone when it comes to predictions (did predict alabama beating Clemson, tho.. :lol ). You never know in the SEC though. No one gave us any hope back in 1994 and we went into Baton Rouge with Tanneyhill and won.

With College Football, paticularly SEC football, pretty hard pedicting a winner. Should be a good game Saturday Night. I will say that that I would not want to be playing this team coming off the loss they had last week at FLA. Of course, there's always the over rated argument and/or coming out flat two times in a row.

BTW...not sure about the 94 USC gamecocks, but the 94 LSU Tigers were 1-2 when USC came to town and finished the year 4-7. I was a sophomore at LSU in 94, and I can promise you I never heard anyone say the words "no one gave us hope against" and "Curly Haulman's LSU Tigers" in the same sentence.

  11. This topic should probably be amended to the last topic on Turntables, but I thought it desrved its on thread. A lot of us viny lovers have to deal with great record collections that aren't digitally transferrable, spending way too much money on vinyl and cd's, and or somewhat inferior turntables with USB outputs.

This changed for me about two weeks ago. I'm a very proud owner of a Sumiko Pro-Ject Expression II and a Rotel 1062, which has an above average entry level phono stage. This rig has been more than I needed for my vinyl collection and I could not be happier with it. However, yesterday's new purchase of Bonnie Price Billy's lie down in the light would have only been enjoyed at home if it weren't for my recent purchase of a Pro-Ject Phono Box II USB Pre-amp.

The Phono Box II has a supposedly excellent entry level phono stage, that I home is superior to my Rotel, however, the real kicker for me was the USB output. Now I can simply attach my laptop to the pre-amp, and record any and all vinyl I want to.

I have yet to properly warm-up the pre-amp but will post my review in a month or so. This piece seems to be designed for those who have a entry level turntable with a receiver, etc., lacking in a proper phono stage. Pro-ject has also comeout with a Debut III model, their base turntable, with an integrated USB output.

    I'll keep you posted.

    PHONO BOX Pre-amp

    DEBUT III

PS...the Phono box is a about the size of a CD case, stacked 3 high.

  12. My tickets are at Will Call and i will have an extra if anyone knows someone that needs one. Orch, lift 1

Couple of questions for anyone that might be familair with the area:

1.) Any where to get a pre-show cold one near the center?

2.) Considering traffic from Denver, would you leave earlier to give more time but put you right in the middle of rush hour; or leave later. I live in Stapleton and was considering leaving around 6:00 PM.

    Thanks.

    Will

  13. sweet!

i'm related (by marriage) to the owners of Twist & Shout, amazing store :)

I have not been to stores all over the country, but I have been to Waterloo and I would put T&S in that Category. Amazing Staff and an unbelieveable selection. Great in stores all the time, and they record and release alot of them on their own.

Doesn't hurt that it one complex you have Tattered Cover Book Store (amazing independent book store), Twist and Shout, Neighborhood Flix (Indy movie theatre with great food and bar), Encore (upscale restaurant), and a good local burrito joint.

  14. I was at this in store and can attest to jason and the band firing on all cylinders! I was standing by the board and actually got to put the headphones on, sounded great.

Goddamn Lonely Love and Into the Mystic sounded amazing. Looking forward to this....

  15. Sept 16, 2003. I was trying to get info on the Auditorium shows and when I couldn't make it I found this place and Donna hooked me up with the shows. To this day, the only message board I believe I have ever joined, and I try to check it every day. Have laughed harder, been exposed to more differing opinions, and been turned on to more good music than I could have ever dreamed of.

During Hurricane Katrina, there were a lot of people on here that offered there thoughts and support, and that will forever endear Via Chicago to me.

It was a different and smaller community 5 years ago, but it has been a fun watching it evolve, sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse.

No matter what, this place has most certainly increased my quality of life. Thanks.

PS...I so wish I had given my screen name just a little bit of thought before that first time I signed on. Obviously, my first message board.

  16. Oh, duh!....I clearly wasn't paying close attention. Glad Jerod is ok! You raise a good point, and a scary one....we all act as though places of refuge, like hospitals, are somehow immune from the capricious behavior of the weather, but of course they aren't.

I'm still glad Dreamin' Judy is ok. :P

Some of the most unbelieveable stories from Hurricane katrina came from those Dr's and Nurses who stayed behind at Charity Hospital in New Orleans.

Some of the dumbest to! Probably the dumbest was the fact that the emergency generators of the cities trauma hospital were in the basement. A city that is about 9 feet below sea level at that location and who's main risk is flooding.

Sorry for the tanegent/ thread hijac. My sister and brotehr in law live in Starkeville, MS and I couldn't get in touch with them yesterday. She finally called yesterday evening.

    Hope everyone is safe

  17. see above :rolleyes

The funniest part about that was the article I read was "ESPN Confirms", I'm going to hold out about even considering this until I hear something from a more reliable source.

I'm sure OSU has plenty of talent to fill that spot. Hell our starting senior QB hasn't been healthy since VaTech, missed the SEC Champ game, and who knows if he'll be healthy enough for the NC game.

Honestly...I would love nothing more than for both teams to be completely healthy and ready to go for Jan 7th.

  18. Is this some sort of elaborate scheme meant to humanize LSU and make it more difficult to build up a deep-seated loathing for them in the buildup to the game? :brow

If so, it kind of worked. Good show.

Pretty hard getting anything passed you 1/423. You may get back to loathing the tigers.

It is pretty nice hearing some of the good things these kids do.

I don't know if God has a plain, but I wouldn't be surprised if He had a plan...

Excellent work getting that take home point out of the story.

  19. Seems like we're always hearing about the bad decisions and pathetic actions of some athletes, just thought ya'll might like to see this. From what I could find this is most certainly true.

    GEAUX TIGERS

There is a little boy named Michael V. Conger. Michael is in St. Jude's hospital battling cancer. Three days ago he received this blog on his web site.

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 16, 2007 10:19 PM, CST Hey Michael, I recently saw your story and wanted to have the honor to write in your guest book. My name is Ciron Black. I am the left tackle for the LSU tigers football team, im also number 70 and I saw you wearing that jersey number, that's a great number by the way:). You know some people see us as heroes because of how we play but the truth is people like yourself are the real heroes. I see all the small problems I face are nothing compared to the hardships that you may go through. God has a plain for all of us and for some reason he put it on my heart to write you tonight...if it is at all possible I would love to talk to you. My number is #%$^%^&$#% anytime day or night if you need someone to talk to. Hang in there buddy and just know that anything is possible through Christ.

    Your Friend,

    Ciron Black

P.S. I would love to write your name on my wrist tape as I get ready to take the field on Jan. 7th for the national championship. Let me know if that is ok.

Michael's family, who lives in Prairieville, called and met up with Ciron to take pictures and thank him for his support. Ciron gave them a football signed by the entire team. I don't know about you, but this is the kind of player I want representing LSU in the NC. Maybe Ivan Maisel needs to read this since he has no respect for our football players and the type of men that Coach Miles has on his football team.
