  1. I particularly liked the part where Jeff tried to explain the difficulty in getting the warmth and depth in todays recordings that was the hallmark of a lot of 60's and 70's stuff.

Also glad to hear that it sounds like the band is happy with the vinyl pressing. Great article!

  2. Food-wise, it's hard to go wrong with Chuy's, Trudy's, Guero's, Threadgill's, Hill's Cafe, Stubb's or Iron Works (though it seems like you've got the last two covered -- bbq -- with the Salt Lick). I know I've left a ton of great stuff out; if there's a kind of food you're hankering for, say the word and I'll give you my read.

For entertainment, the Continental Club, Ginny's Little Longhorn (more ambience than musical draws, typically), and South Congress (which is actually where the Continental Club is) are hard to beat. Avoid 6th St. unless you're into the college-age bar/dancing scene; the 4th St. area/Warehouse District can be fun, but it's increasingly crowded and yuppified.

As time allows, grab a movie (along with a good meal and beer/wine) at one of the Alamo Drafthouse locations.

    Enjoy Austin!

Thought of one more thing that would be helpful...we're staying at the Downtown Hilton on 5th and Neches. Looks like 4th street will be right out the back door and hopefully we're close to the 4th st/warehouse distric. It would be nice to know some cool bars and other attractions in the general vacinity. Thanks....

Much obliged! Was planning on hitting South Congress and will check out 4th st area. can't wait! Will be gettinginto town tonight! Thanks again for all the info.....

  4. We're having a "pretty swinging R&B band" play our wedding here in Chicago (the Peter Henes Orchestra), and they've been pretty accommodating. We're dancing to "Be Mine" by REM for the first dance, and I sent the band the notes for "I'm the Man Who Loves You" (a la the recent Wilco book) that the band will be playing (replete with horn section) -- my fiance's favorite Wilco song. Good times.

Crazy! Sounds like a great band! Congrats and best of luck!

  5. Hey cw, I responded in the wedding songs thread before I saw this one.

I just wanted to add, another cool band on Friday night you might be interested in is Chili Cold Blood.

They are playing at Beerland on Red River.

    This looks interesting.

"CINCO DE MAYO CHICAS POBRES FUNDRAISER is your chance to see the TXRD Lonestar Rollergirls take off their skates (or not?) for some pudding wrestling, tricycle jousting, belching, and other ladylike competition. There's also beer, live music, a team-date auction, and fun activities for the kids. :lol All of today's proceeds benefit the above mentioned Rollergirls (aka, the chicas pobres). Sat., May 5, 3-9pm. Independence Brewery, 3913 Todd Ln, 797-7879. $10 ($15/two people, free, kids under 12). info@txrd.com "

    And congratulations!

Saw that. Appreciate the advice. Will look into chili cold blood and possibly the rollergirls. FYI...don't forget the 2nd weekend of jazz fest will be going on Sat and Sun just two hours away. Line-up is a little lame this year which made it much easier to miss my first fest since 1993. Anyway, congratulations to you to and be sure to get you some good seafood....and some boudin and cracklin if your like me....

  6. I'm from Lake Charles. Lived in Baton Rouge for a couple years, and Lafayette for about 12 years.

I'm a big fan of Red Stick Ramblers as well.

I'll actually be in Lafayette Friday night for my "Bachelor" party with P-Funk.

I would recommend the Son Volt show in Helotes (outside of San Antonio) on Saturday night over the Stubb's show, if you don't mind making the drive. Either one will be great though. The band opening for Son Volt (High Strung) has an in-store show at Waterloo Records at 5:00PM on Friday. If you've never been, it's a fantastic record store. You might want to go to the Austin Chronicle website and look through the events going on this weekend. Their restaurant guide is also very helpful. Have a good time!

Cool...my fiancee is from Sulphur. have fun in Lafayette...really like that town. Appreciate the recs. Will probably saty in Austin, and may just check out some local stuff. Really enjoy Son Volts new album, but the last two Farrar shows I saw were a little too low key (actually boring) for this weekend. I'm a bit of a Vinyl collector and was planning on a trip to Waterloo...now i got a plan...thanks! I'll check out the Chronicle as well. You have a good time yourself....

  7. Some mexican places:

    Matt's El Rancho

    Tres Amigos

    Gueros

Sounds like Saturday is going to be a great day.

Yeah, I think as long as the weather cooperates, Saturday will be a blast. Heard alot about the Barton Creek area, and specifically the courses, and Salt Lick is one of my favorite places in the nation to eat!

Thanks for the mexican joint recs. When I was a little kid I satyed with my dad for a month during the summer while he was in Austin finishing his PhD. We would got to two places all the time...one was Jorges, which I really liked. it could be complete shite, but I remember us both really liking it. We also went to this joint that all the waiters were Comic Book Characters...this place was obviously the greatest place in the world for a 5 year old!

The last time I was in Austin was for the 2005 ACL fest (which ever year Wilco played)...we were so busy food was not a big priority. We did have some damn good mexican though.

We're going to be at the 6th street hilton just because that was the best place for everyone, but we're looking for things to do that are not necessarily in the 6th street area..

  8. Know there are a couple of Austinites on here, and after all the info I got from the wedding song post, figured I would give this a shot. I'm flying down to Austin Thurs night for a Bachelor party weekend. The only plans we have (that I know of!) are golf out at Barton Creek on Saturday, followed by a drive over to Salt Lick BBQ.

Their any good local acts playing this weekend or must check out restaurants? There is a group that might catch Son Volt Fri night and just about the whole crew can't believe the luck of missing the DBT Dirt underneath tour rolling through there by a day or so. Anyway....any and all information would be greatly appreciated.

  9. I too am getting married soon (June 15th), and appreciate all the responses.

My fiancee is Indian (Hindu) and I am Cajun/Italian mix (raised Catholic) from south Louisiana.

We are having a great Cajun band in our big reception room (Lost Bayou Ramblers), and a sitar player in the "lounge" area.

But I want a mix playlist for when the band takes a break, or if the party is still going after the band quits.

If anyone has any ideas on unique wedding ceremony music (not the traditional classical songs), I would appreciate it.

    :cheers

Wilceaux....what part of Cajun country are you from? I just moved out to Denver last month, but before that I was in Baton Rouge from 1993 on. Lost bayou Ramblers are fantastic, should be a great party. For a time we were going to have the wedding in NOLA but things got out of hand on the numbers. However, I had the Red Stick Ramblers tentatively booked for the reception! Best of luck!

PS...incidentily....I will be flying down to Austin Thurs night for my bachelor party. May catch Son Volt Fri night, but if you are still in that area, I would appreciate any local knowledge on things to do. We've got a round fo golf planned at Barton Creek on Saturday and heading to the Salt Lick after that....but thats all the plans I know of?

  10. Not a chance. If anyone will be a bust it will be JaMarcus Russell. He should send half of his first check to the Notre Dame secondary because they basically made this guy. Russell will have multpile 5 pick games this year.

Not sure what kind of year Jamarcus will have with the Raiders, but I'd be willing to bet he will not be looked back on as a bust. Multiple five pick games....seriously doubt that

If you think Notre Dame's secondary made this guy....your wrong.

No. 1 overall pick in 2007 NFL Draft by Oakland Raiders

2007 Sugar Bowl Most Valuable Player

    2006 Manning Award winner

    2006 First-Team All-SEC (AP, SEC Coaches)

    2006 Davey O

  11. Milltown Brothers! You mean I'm not the only person in America to have the Milltown Brothers in my collection? I was putting my CDs on itunes and I couldn't even find album artwork for Slinky.

Anyway, my wife and I had "Here, There and Everywhere" by the Beatles as our first dance song. We ended up giving the DJ a list of tunes we liked so they could get the feel of what type of music to play. All in all, they did a great job. Lots of Motown kept the guests dancing. It is a must to have a "Do Not Play" list with the DJ.

Agreed on the "Do not play" list. This is really been helpful...appreciate all the advice.

  12. Wow...looks like a great show. I just moved out to Denver from Baton Rouge and really look forward to catching some shows. There seems to be some great Venues and plenty of acts coming thorough. Never been to Red Rocks either!

Getting married in a couple of weeks, so that, plus getting settled in my new place and and my new job has me pretty tied up. Any pointers on must see and do things would be greatly appreciated. I've already found Twist and Shout and the Tattered Cover books store. Twist and Shout is such a great record store...on par with Waterloo. Will probably keep it on the down low until the weekend before the big day....have tickets to the Truckers Dirt Underneath Tour at the Fox in Boulder. Looking forward to running into some of you CO VC'ers in the near future.

    Will

  13. Maybe too many hippies in Colorado. That is very cool about the bands down south. We have some good ones here in Chicago too. When I got married I had a friend who plays piano put together a band of some jazz and blues musicians. It was very fun. Congratulations and have fun with it.

    LouieB

Do not doubt that one bit. All the weddings i've been to in New orleans the receptions were unbelieveable. Took me a while to warm to it, but I'm liking the idea now. The photographer we got is really cool and just got married. Said he picked this DJ after seeing him at a couple of weddings and he thought their reception was a blast! pretty good recs. Appreciate the kind words....

  14. Thanks everyone.....

Peel and 1/4 23cd....really appreciate the insight. I was going nuts over this and I agree...I think I may have been the only one out there for half the night. Really like the idea of must plays and must not plays....as well as the obvious first dance etc. Peel cograts on the upcoming big day....don't suppose its may 19th is it?

Louie and 23....you wouldn't believe some of the wedding bands down south. The last wedding I went to, the drummer and bassist were 20 year muscle Shoals Sessions vets....amazing. Louie...hear you on the live band more fun...and believe I searched far and wide out here, but couldn't find anything. Found a couple of jazz trios and experimental stuff, but nothing that lots of people could enjoy and dance to.

    Thanks again everyone....

  15. Back when people around here were getting hitched left and right, there were quite a few people asking opinions for good songs to play at weddings. I have recently moved to Denver and will be getting married before I know it. We will have a DJ at our wedding, which is something new to me, as I am from MS and most wedding receptions have really swinging R&B bands. I had zero luck finding a band for the reception.

I am meeting with our DJ next week and am working on a list to show him. Any of you who might still have their list handy, or have an opinion on a favorite song (or 10) to hear at a wedding, I'm taking requests.

    Thansks in advance

    Will

  16. I would greatly appreciate it if someone could PM or you send it a copy of this song. Putting together a mix for a friend and i can't seem to find it. Thanks. for your troublesss

    DBT - THE DIRT UNDERNEATH

(stories and songs sitting down / tales facing up)

    Y'ALL:

Nearly six years ago, DBT played a show at Pine Hill Farms up in North Carolina. The monthly event (now, long defunct) was held at a farmhouse on a beautiful piece of land outside of Chapel Hill NC.

It was written up in No Depression and had a built in following.

We were invited to play there shortly after the release (1st time) of Southern Rock Opera. We played sitting down and acoustic. We drank huge quantities of beer and whiskey and deconstructed the SRO album (and many other albums worth of songs) over a 4+ hour period. Bootlegs of the highlights have been very popular among collectors and the show seems to be a very fond memory among folks who were there (none of whom can actually remember it). Such is how things like that go.

We play very loud and for many good reasons.

The show itself has morphed far from where we originally set out from and in ways that I largely find thrilling.

I love the ridiculous cathartic bombast of it and the way I feel like someone beat the ever loving shit out of me when it's over.

That said, I do sometimes miss how the songs get buried in the process and have always dreaded and feared a day when the whole thing becomes a caricature of itself.

This year is the first time since before SRO that we aren't out promoting a new album. We are all committed to taking some time at home to recharge, write and spend some Family Time.

We also wanted to go out a do something a little different. Maybe revisit some songs in a different light, maybe try out some new stuff on a smaller scale, maybe tell some stories and sing some songs. Pull up some chairs, have a few drinks and tell some stories to each other and some friends.

We know how to do that but just never really get around to it.

THE DIRT UNDERNEATH is a show I've been wanting to do for a long time.

It's roots come from that Pine Hill Farms show I mentioned (the first one, not the 2nd one, which actually was kind of a drunken clusterfuck).

Shonna plays a mean upright bass. Maybe we can get Cooley to play that banjo he plays so well in the studio. We all know some stories and can sing some pretty harmonies when we're not singing over a wall of guitars (Oh glorious guitars).

It's not a permanent thing, just a handful of dates (TBA SOON). A chance to reconnect with some songs and maybe each other a bit.

That way, when we go back out with The Rock Show, it will be fresh and new to us again. Like Rock and Roll is supposed to be.

Contrary to rumors, there are NO CONFIRMED DATES YET but hopefully there will be soon.

    See You There.

  17. Planning a honeymoon and sure would appreciate any advice on travel guide resources etc...

We're staying at a resort in Los Cabos and I have most of those details ironed out. Looking for a guide or opinions on how to find the out of the way places, eco tours, places to eat, etc. Thanks in advance!
