"Tried and True (alternate)", (i.e. early version of "Summer Teeth" with a different chorus) is fun.  To me it sounds like the theme song of a terrible TV show, and I wouldn't be surprised if that's what they were going for.

Just finished it last night and I have pretty much the same opinion.  I also write songs at a slow trickle (been writing for about 20 years and I've got around 30 songs to show for it) but I still learned a lot from reading the book.  And it's such an easy read I can see myself reading it again from time to time.  I particularly benefitted from the stuff about writing lyrics because I've always found making the music easier but lyrics are more difficult.

I'm quite grateful that he put in the effort to write this book.  He'll inspire more people to make their own art.

His idea that the best music for him is the music that inspires him to make his own music really resonated with me.  There are some artists who I hear and all I want to do after listening to them is pick up a guitar and write some songs.  Jeff is one of those artists to me (which he'd probably be happy to hear).

After finishing the book I tried the "write a song with a time limit" exercise.  I had one chord progression kicking around for the last two weeks and as I put the kettle on to boil some water, I thought, "let me work on this song until the kettle whistles".  I didn't quite finish the song, but I got some nice melodies, some new related chord progressions, and a few good lyrics.  It's sort of 80% there instead of what it had been 10 minutes earlier, which was just a single chord progression and nothing more.  And I will work on it more today!

It was also a nice surprise (though not too surprising, I guess) to hear how much Jeff loves the song "Andromeda" by Weyes Blood.  Such a good one.  For those who haven't heard it,...

An early favorite is a tie between Natural Disaster and Half-Asleep closely followed by Opaline. 

 

The production is phenomenal! It has the feel of a record that will be easy to replicate live, but will never quite capture that studio magic. That thought should only be viewed as a credit to the top notch production of Jeff & Tom Schick.

Yes!  It sounds very live but still pristine quality.  Some parts remind me of Neil’s Harvest and other parts feel like some 50s country band. The music feels so real and it has depth. 

I haven't posted here in a few years, but just wanted to see how the discussions on this album are going.  I think it's really, really good.  The band is so tight, which is not too surprising with the family connection.  The "power lines" lyrics in Troubled caught me off guard.  I was thinking "I recognize those words..." and re-listened to Ode to Joy and found them in the last song.

haven't posted here in a while (years) but just dropping by to say I was going to go to this show but had an annoying cold so stayed home instead of sitting outside (and i live about 100km out of town so it'd be a late night).  gave my ticket to a friend.  bummed to have missed it, especially since this new album is so awesome.  hope they come back again soon.  though i was disappointed to miss it, i liked being able to go to bed at 10:30pm instead of 12:30 or 1:00 as it would have been had i gone to the show.

Just did the one with the drummer (wearing the wilco shirt) who wanted a cheaper price on the drum kit. I'm on puzzle 554 out of 600 (I think). What will I do when I get to the end? I don't know if I can stick to just one jumble per day!

Whoa HUGE bump from the last post in this thread but I was playing a whole bunch of jumbles and saw wilco shirts very often. You see, I downloaded the Just Jumble app. I've gone through over 500 jumble puzzles in the last couple of weeks since I downloaded it. Anyway all the wilco shirts reminded me of this thread I started in 2008(!). So, Just A Kid, I just wanted to say your jumbles are awesome. The drawings are great and the puns are perfect. I love how the answers are always completely true but have the separate pun meaning too. So are you Jeff or David?

I'm in Canada and have yet to receive my preorder of the vinyl album.

I am pretty excited to get it, because (1) it's an awesome album and hearing it on vinyl will fill me with love(!), and (2) the long version of OSM!!

I haven't downloaded or listened to any vinyl rips yet, since i'm waiting for my own copy.

On the CD version, I don't really like the fade out, because it does feel sort of like someone ended the party early. so I'm pretty sure I'll love the LP version.

but on the topics of fadeouts in general... i think it depends on the song. i can think of some songs where a fadeout is the best thing possible, like someone mentioned before, about the feeling that it's trailing off into the distance, playing forever.

my favourite example of that is the last song on the first Foo Fighters album - Exhausted:

Also, I have a band, and we did a song with a really nice chord progression, just fading away in a similar way, but rather than just fading it out, we did the fadeout live, as in, we played the instruments softer and softer until we sort of weren't really playing them anymore. and for the recording, something cool i decided to do with the guitar, when it's fading out, i turn down the volume on the electric, so eventually you hear the sound of the acoustically-played "unplugged" electric guitar replacing the sound of the actual signal of the guitar through the amp (if you're interested, that song can be listened to here).

well, I went to this show last night, and it blew me away. I've seen Wilco 5 or 6 times now (I've sort of stopped counting), and they just get better and better. Art of Almost -> I Might alone was the highlight for me. I love this new album and the songs sounded so good live. In all the times I've seen Wilco, they've played 2 encores, so I was a bit surprised that it was "cut short". I heard that there are ridiculous curfews in Massey Hall, as mentioned above, about finishing by 10:30 or something like that. Well, that was the only "downside"... just that I thought it would be a bit longer. And MAN OH MAN, I can't believe One Sunday Morning was the omission. I would have LOVED to see that. But the show was great. Poor Places (one of my favourites) into Reservations! I had never heard Reservations live before and it was pretty awesome. I have tix for a different show tonight, so I sort of can't go see Wilco again. I'm disappointed now, because I REALLY want to go again.

1a. In 1997 or so, I saw a video on muchmusic. It was the video where they are all skydiving with their instruments. I didn't really like the song too much, but I remembered the band name.

1b. In 2002 or so, a friend of mine really liked Wilco. He had Being There and Mermaid Ave 1. He was friends with not only me, but my sister too. Somehow he lent my sister his Wilco CD's, saying "this is awesome - you should listen to it". So I didn't directly listen to it, but I heard my sister listening to a couple of songs (I remember Far Far Away and California Stars in particular). It didn't strike me then, yet. I was still (gradually) getting out of my "the only good music is heavy music" phase (that started way back in junior high - I was already in university by this point).

1c. In 2004, this girl that I had a crush on at the time was really into Wilco. She told me how she had gone to see them etc., and that was really when I decided to check them out! I didn't get any albums or anything yet - I found a download of one of their concerts online. I think it was glidemagazine.com - they had a full show from 2004 on there. I listened to it and I actually loved it! I really warmed to several of the songs, like "At Least That's What You Said" and "The Late Greats". As well, some of the standard favourites, like "Jesus Etc". So from there, I started buying their albums. I think the first one I got was A Ghost Is Born, then YHF soon after (might have been the other way around). Then ALL the others ones very soon after that.

2a. The opportunity came soon to see not Wilco, but Jeff Tweedy solo, in June or July of 2005. I remember asking on this board if I should go, because it was far away (3 hour drive for me), and I really wanted to see Wilco, the band. People were like "yeah, go see him. You'll find Wilco shows are abundant, but Jeff solo is a lot more rare!" So I went, and it was awesome, if not a little short. It was at the Calgary Folk Fest.

2b. Finally saw the full band in June of 2006 at Edmonton's Jubilee Auditorium. Great show, but not even my favourite Wilco show, now that I've seen them many times since....

3 (not that you asked). I've started to lose count how many times I've seen them now, because I see them pretty much every time they come to my town. Let's see... there was 2006, 2007 (twice + a soundcheck), a 2008 (opening for Neil Young), a 2010 (probably my favourite Wilco show), and the JT solo in 2005, and another JT just this year in 2011. And there'll be one more Wilco show for me in the near future this fall!

after 20 minutes in the waiting room, then 5 minutes of "sold out" messages, i was able to get a pair for night 1 in toronto. row J. not great, but not too bad either. so far, i haven't found anyone to go to this show with (that's my usual MO - buy tix when they go on sale, then figure out the logistics, who's going, etc., later). i'm only going to the one show this time, because i'm seeing Pearl Jam in Hamilton the night before, and Kyuss (sort of) in Guelph the night after. busy weekend! anyway, what i'm trying to say, is if it's only you (though you said "we", so i guess it's probably not only you), i might be willing to go WITH you. as in, i have two tix, and i need to use one for myself, and then one for "someone else"...

god, i'm sorry for being so inarticulate today. i didn't sleep too much last night. this morning i actually thought i was still dreaming when i went to the webpage and saw that waiting room. "huh? am i still asleep? is this a dream? why am i playing snake when i'm supposed to be buying wilco tix?"

very very gutted that i missed this show

i live in Waterloo, and the roads were horrible due to all the snow. I started driving out, but turned around. It just wasn't happening. Better safe with no concert, than in some accident on the way to or back from it. I went last night, of course, and tonight was going to be the 2-in-a-row. Looks like an awesome setlist, and Feist for You and I - wow. You people are so lucky! Yes, quite disappointed I couldn't go.

The silver lining is that a VC-er was able to fill in my empty seat at the last minute, so all was not lost.

these are the ones I'm particularly jealous of all of you for getting to hear tonight.

did any/everyone see my post in the "Just a Fan" forum? I'm giving away my tix for tonight (Mar 23 in Toronto) because I can't go, due to bummy roads, and living out of town. PM me if you're interested.

First of all, I'm posting in this forum because I think it gets more views - technically it doesn't have to be in the tickets forum, because I'm not selling, buying, or trading - I'm giving them away. So here it is...

At this stage, this is only a MAYBE, but the situation is as follows:

1. I live in Waterloo (about 100km away from Toronto).

2. I started driving out to go to the show and it's not going to happen. There is too much snow; the roads are awful. I'm not going to risk it.

3. I have two tix for tonight (Toronto) in row G that cannot get used!

4. Total bummercars. It sucks. I called the venue and also front gate tickets and they both said I can't get any refund. TOTAL bummer. So, those seats will be empty unless I can find someone to sit in them.

5. They are "will call only", which means I'm supposed to be there in person (with ID etc) to pick them up. I called the venue again and asked if I could transfer the tickets to someone else's name IF I can find someone in Toronto who can go. He said "probably" and to call him back if/when I find someone, which is why I'm not 100% sure, but...

6. Provided it's possible ("probably" from the guy at the venue), I'm offering my 2 tickets to the first person who wants them. We can work out details through PM, or by phone. I'll update this post when/if someone takes them.

So... anyone who doesn't have tickets want to go?

i agree that it felt a little abrupt, ending the set when he did. if anything, it just felt too short (not that i'm complaining - he played a while - it just FELT short). i felt like we were just getting going, then "ok, bye, thanks". of course, we knew there'd be at least one encore, but it was a bit surprising...

...and a lyric flub that was sort of funny:

Jeff sang "I'm gonna need to be patient with me" instead of "I'm gonna need you to be patient with me".

The thing that was funny was the look on Jeff's face after he sang it. A slightly embarrassed smile, sort of like, "oops, that makes no sense at all, but i wonder if anyone even noticed".

oh yeah, forgot to mention the new song was very good. i don't always know which are new songs, because i'm not too familiar with the b-sides and non-Wilco songs, but i do remember the "let me be the one to open up your mind" song from last night. i was thinking it might be new. there were some lyrics about being "old" or something, so i thought it must be recent. and "You are not alone" was also pretty wicked. I don't know the song too well... listened to the Mavis Staples version once or twice, so I don't "know" it. but i recognized it by its title. it was definitely very cool to hear some newer stuff. as much as i like the old classics from Summerteeth etc, it's refreshing to hear new things.

I thought one wing sounded incredible live.

yes!! that song never really hit me until hearing it last night in that rendition.
