  1. These articles do a pretty good job explaining the foreign banks/AIG deal:

Once the bailout decision is made, and the funds are in, the rescuer doesn't get to choose which obligations are honored. That's especially true for A.I.G. The whole point of the rescue was to keep the mega-insurer from defaulting on its obligations.

  2. Also, Winston, I read an article recently that said that the bonuses were not deferred comp. Apparently, they were incentives to keep the employees around. On the theory, I guess, that it wouldn't be so easy to just replace employees to untangle the mess that the genuises at AIG created.

An article that I just read said that the contracts were signed in March 2008, and they guaranteed them the same pay as 2007 regardless of their performance (this is according to Cuomo). If this is true, either both sides signing the contracts were idiots, or they knew they were in trouble and anticipated getting assistance from the government. And we need a new word. According to the American Heritage Dictionary a bonus is "something given or paid in addition to what is usual or expected" or "A sum of money or an equivalent given to an employee in addition to the employee's usual compensation." These "bonuses" are starting to seem pretty usual and expected.

  3. I think the key phrase in the article is ...if everyone goes out and spends it..." there may be a concern of inflation. More than likely, however, countries will use it to pay down debt.

My friend sent me that article. I don't think it's that big of a deal. I was just copying and pasting Panther quotes for fun really.

  4. Wilcoworld has this for pre-order. The DVD is $15, and the DVD and a tote bag is $20. Plus, you can get the 2009 calendar for $10 if you pre-order the DVD. I hate ordering stuff from their store, though, because the shipping is so expensive. The calendar, DVD, and tote bag would cost $8 to ship, which seems like a lot to me.

But they're shipping on the 15th presumably to get it to you by the 18th. That's not that bad. I'm personally just going to buy it in store on the 18th. It's a couple of blocks from me and they are some other Record Store Day releases I hope to get (MMJ, Pavement, maybe Sonic Youth)

  5. I agree that contracts have to be honored. In this case, since the contracts are old, it's a sticky situation that we don't want to turn into a slippery slope. But in this case, the federal government has 80% of the company, a company that lost $61.7B in the 4th quarter alone. The government should be looking for legal loopholes as aggressively and these guys are, I guess is my only point.

  6. I don't mean the video download, I mean this:

"The audio tracks of all songs featured on the DVD (including the extras) will be available as a free audio download from wilcoworld (upon receipt of your dvd)."

I didn't know whether this meant you'd have to preorder the DVD through the Wilco site or not.

Oh, you should be definitely be fine. Usually, they're mp3s (192 or 320). With Sunken Treasure, they were 320kbps mp3's. You could get them no matter where you bought the DVD and then they eventually made them free to everybody on the website regardless of having bought the DVD or not.

  7. Hey, thanks for the reply. I did see that Amazon had it a few days ago, but when I saw that US fans got an audio download of the tracks when they pre-ordered through the Wilco store, I decided to wait and see if the UK store would offer this too. I hope they do.

It's just one video track that you get with the preorder.

I would bet audio downloads would be free to everyone eventually, either by inserting your DVD into a computer or downloading from their website.

  8. i vote against going up to the front if you don't have a ticket for up front, i quite honestly find that kind of stuff annoying and off-putting at concerts. but revenge is for the birds and if you have to ask, you'll only hate yourself more later. be honest. it is the best policy. if you can't be honest with a friend then what kind of friend are you.

    Well said.

When I asked what's wrong with going up to the front, I assumed it was either GA or she knew someone. Every venue is different and some places that is ok. I used to live near a theatre that had the front row reserved for members. For most rock shows, the members never came so security let people up there. Other places I've been to have reserved seating but part of the front is for dancing.

If it wasn't ok in this case, tell them how much it ticked you off, and go from there.

  9. I wouldn't call this "returning the favor." Screwing them out of a ticket is not the same as going up to the front. Wait, what's wrong with going up to the front? Am I misunderstanding something? Why not take them, tell them you didn't like it last time (they'll probably buy you a beer), and then follow them up to the front and have one of the best nights of your life.
