  1. That was an amazing speech. Watch until the end of it everybody. For my money this stuff is the civil rights struggle of our time.
  2. I want to vote for someone who makes gas cost a dollar, and while they're at it expands the dollar menu at Taco Bell. This is what a president is for.
  3. It is true that the U.S. bombed Libya. It is also true that Libyan rebels overthrew a tyrannical government. The aftermath of most revolutions is not pretty, this is one of the few examples of American exceptionalism I can think of; our relatively graceful post-revolution transition. At this point Al-Qaida could be a game of "Whack a Mole". We may have destabilized, and crushed most of their central power, but terrorist organizations are successful because they are decentralized. Something they will want to call al-Qaida can rear its head as long as third world countries in the middle ea
  4. Romney's bringing up Obama's pension in the middle of an immigration discussion seemed pretty desperate.
  5. So then Sparky, how do you feel about Obama's military cuts in contrast to Romney's plan to restore it to its "former glory"?
  6. What's interesting about that article is it doesn't really show Clinton finding anything to say as to why it's her fault. She takes responsibility but it doesn't explain what her mistake was. I think there is a ignorance-going-in, hindsight 20/20 element to this story. No one would have allowed for the attack to transpire had they any inkling it was coming. The confusion around the hate video, and the perception that the violence erupted out of protests shows just how confused intelligence was. Yes, security should have been better. It seems all too easy to attribute the lack of defens
  7. Sorry to cut and paste, but I found this section particularly curious:
  8. This is a really good article about what Romney, or Obama would actually do about the economy after the election. http://nymag.com/news/politics/elections-2012/obama-romney-economic-plans-2012-10/index2.html
  9. It's interesting how it says "Biden never voted against funding either war." A double negative is usually a sign of rookery, tom-foolery and shenanigans (or as Joe would say 'Malarkey'). You're right Boon, that is some weird wording. But to be fair, my lamebrain didn't sus that out until you mentioned it more clearly.
  10. ^^ That was a weird exchange. Be nice Boon, Jules was just asking a question.
  11. About 5% of a big collection of LP's, CD's and mp3's. The big winners are: Jay-Z The Roots Mos Def Wu Tang Blakroc Talib Kwali Tribe Called Quest Calle Trece
  12. Annnnnnnnnnd Romneys tax plan is verified to be impossible (the 20% was advertising, not economics): http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-10-12/the-final-word-on-mitt-romney-s-tax-plan.html
  13. Totally contrived. It also had nothing to do with how this country could be run by either party, not a smart thing to base a decision on.
  14. That moderator was great. She didn't let either candidate launch off a platitude without some real factual defense. That seemed to put Ryan in a corner several times. I thought Biden came out a bit dickish, but like he knew what he was talking about. Ryan came off pretentious dickish, like he was desperate. It was like watching a Junior in a liberal arts and sciences bachelor program hungrily telling his uncle how much better he could fix the world, and his uncle keeps dialing him back "Well that might not actually work son, it's not that simple. Here's what you don't know about this:"
  15. I don't buy into the "stay respectful with your language when it comes to elected officials" bit. I have always had some choice words about Bush. But the fact is, those words aren't very useful to my argument. The fascinating thing about Biden, is the media has cooked his story- along with his tendency for gaffes- such that most people don't realize what an intelligent and accomplished politician he is. Yet again why I am going to be fascinated with this debate: which side of Biden's character will prevail for the camera.
  16. His older mark, Songs Ohia has some fantastic, dark, quiet, meditative albums like The Lioness, Didn't It Rain and Ghost Tropic. His newer project Magnolia Electric CO can be a bit more rockin. I love their latest Josephine, but there was this transitional album that is released by Songs Ohia but the album title is Magnolia Elec CO.... it might be the best. Or at least the first three tracks are.
  17. I love Molina. His songs have been a theme in my life for about ten years now. I can always come back to his stuff. I met him once and he was obviously a kind fellow. Some petty part of me is curious as to what he became addicted to, but more importantly I'm just glad the guy is getting better.
  18. I live in CO. The Feds have pretty much ignored the fact that everyone I know who really wants access can get a prescription and walk in to any one of the hundred odd stores in the city and buy marijuana strong enough to put a cat in a coma. If you can say anything about our time of fiscal duress it is this: it seems to have taken the holier-than-thou heat off of private issues. Romney doesn't know what to say about abortion, so he'd rather not discuss. At this point it looks like a bad career move for a GOP pres candidate to say anything specifically negative about LGBT folks. All said,
  19. I can't wait to see the VP debate. I have no prediction. While Joe Biden is a seasoned veteran- he really knows his politics, he can be the Michael Scott of political prime time. Most of the recent Ryan footage I've seen he comes off pretentious, irritable and easy to confound. I guess my prediction is this: here are two guys that are going to piss each other off.
  20. Manuel Antonio is really cool. If you go a little further south towards Dominical you can stay at this little place called Hacienda Baru. It has been about ten years since I visited but it was a lot quieter, and less populous around there. The Hacienda has their own tours/tour guides and you can walk a half mile from your cabana and see empty beach. Get the hell out of San Jose as fast as you can unless you know someone who knows there way around. There are a lot of smooth operators that will lift the wheels off a Yankee's rental car before they realize what's happened. I hear the Car
  21. A weak, albeit hilarious attempt to struggle against a candidate who swears left and right he wants to close a deficit by lowering taxes, raising military spending and keeping medicaid and social security in tact. Which might be even more hilarious than big bird.
  22. Stewart had a bit in his debate with O'Reilly where he said basically, 'Look, the U.S. is essentially a social democracy. That's how it has functioned for a long time. It has played a necessary role in people's live in this manner for over a century. The sooner we can admit that, the sooner we can use that structure effectively instead of fighting over some ideal that hasn't existed in forever.' Is there a reason that every country in the G8 has a safety net? Is there a reason why the world's most powerful countries make a social investment for some bare minimum guarantees on their citiz
  23. A couple of fallacies about government assistance need to be cleared up here to have a reasonable argument. For starters, a large number of people receiving government assistance are either employed, or retired.
  24. Everybody has mentioned each of mine, except for Johnny Thunder.
