  1. I recently finished Percival Everett's James. I really loved it. The end was surprising and satisfying. Highly recommend.

I'm now reading Ken Callait's Making of Rumours. He was the lead producer, as well as the father of Colbie. I'm reading it because I saw Stereophonic on Broadway last November and he sued the writers. They settled. The book is ok. Not as exciting as I'd hoped. Callait comes off as a real 70s music biz dude in some of the worst possible ways, glorifying his excesses and sexual conquests. Can't recommend.

I remember that being the prevailing opinion-- that Trace was superior-- although I was an adamant dissenter. I tried to turn a lot of my indie-rock-loving friends on to A.M., but only one-- the aforementioned Music Director of the radio station-- agreed with me. He declared it "rad." Everyone else dismissed it as country music. It wasn't until Being There that the scales fell from their eyes. I still remember listening to the CD of Being There when it came out, and my roommate (who had been one of the dismissers) hearing "Misunderstood" and saying, "What's that?" When I said Wilco, he couldn't believe it. He came to the next Wilco show with me and was blown away. I really wanted to say "I told you so," but I was just happy to add another convert.

I liked A.M. more, but I think Windfall and Drown were the two best songs from either album. The rest of Trace is good, but those tracks are great.

Just watched a four-episode drama on Netflix - Adolescence.  Fantastic.

This is as brilliant and unsettling as television gets. As a middle school teacher, so much of it rang true. I fear for this generation, especially the boys.

  4. Reading Bob Spitz's Beatles biography (is it a biography if it's about a band?). Good stuff. When they were in Hamburg, a promoter told them they needed to be better showmen, he would yell at them "Macht Schau!" (make show).

I want a band to release a live album called "Macht Schau!"

Someone posted the lyrics on the Facebook fanpage.  They resonated for me.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wake up, we're here It's so much worse than we feared There's nothing left here Our country has disappeared

With the winter trees bleeding leaf red blood The the summer sweet dreaming, April blush But none of that is ever going to mean as much to me again

Hold out your hand There's so much we don't understand So stick as close as you can To all of your best laid plans

You've got the white clouds hanging so high above you You've got the helicopters dangling, angling to shoot The shots to feed the hungry weekend news crew anchormen

So every evening we can watch from above Crush the cities like a bug Fold ourselves into each other's guts Turn our faces up to the sun

I won't take no I won't let you go All by yourself I know you need my help

When the cold light shakes you like a chandelier The snowflakes break through the atmosphere And melt on the blue breath of the auctioneers and disappear

So every evening we can watch from above Crush the cities like a bug Fold ourselves into each other's blood Turn our faces up to the sun

I have a playlist called "The Year David Bowie Died". In 2016, we lost Bowie, Prince, Leonard Cohen, my mom to suicide, and the America I grew up in. This song is on that playlist. It resonates even stronger knowing that we lost the popular vote this time around.

Glad I can catch Spoon tonight (so late, they take the stage at like 12:15??) because I can't get to Riot Fest (Riot Fest sucks) until 6:30 tomorrow (still in time for Pavement at least). DM me if you want to high five after either show.

Sorry, just seeing this. I had a great time at Riot Fest. One of the better run festivals I've been to. Dead Milkmen and Descendents made me feel like high school again. Not enough to get into the pit, but so fun.

  7. I've been in a tournament predictor pool with some friends. Leading since the 2nd day of group matches, I'm now tied for 2nd after England beat Netherlands. I have to get a bit crazy to reclaim 1st and win, so I'm picking England 1-0 with Foden scoring the goal.

  8. I'm already mourning the end of 2 tournaments Sunday. As a teacher, it's been a glorious football-filled summer. The Olympics will help, then BOOM! right back into the Premier League season. Everton seems to be showing some hopes of stabilizing their future with a solid new owner. Hope springs eternal, but it's the hope that kills.

  9. 2011 movie starring Michael Shannon and Jessica Chastain, Take Shelter. Very good. On Hulu if you're interested. Those two have now done this movie and George & Tammy together. Very different characters, but they really play off each other very well.
