  1. Awesome! Of course, classic rock t-shirts all the rage among teenagers these days, but this one is definitely cool. I saw a student wearing a Smiths t-shirt yesterday. Another fairly deep dive.

I'll often stop kids in Stones, Pink Floyd, AC/DC, Nirvana, etc. shirts and ask them to name people in the bands or 5 songs. They mostly fail. I always tell them it's worth exploring. The exception is a girl I have whose name is Zeppelin. As you might guess, she was raised on it.

On an otherwise bucolic late-summer evening in the heartland, it was a bit jarring to pull up to the entrance to Water Works Park tonight and see a small group of anti-vaccine protesters milling about. They were hardly menacing, and maybe this is a fairly common, ho-hum sight in town, but nevertheless it was a reminder to this visitor that the Covid-19 pandemic and the societal rifts it has caused are far from over and that we still have a long way to go to get back to so-called "normalcy" (if we ever will). In a nod to co-headlining band Trampled By Turtles, one protester held a simple sign that read "Trampled By Tyranny." :chickawow :thumbdown

Though I didn't see any Wilco-referencing signs, obviously the protest — and that comment in particular — didn't escape notice by either band. In one of his few visits to Banter Corner during Wilco's set, Jeff took a moment just before starting Hummingbird to ask the audience in all seriousness, "Is wearing a mask an act of tyranny or an act of love?" Thank goodness the overwhelming response that came back seemed to be the latter. :usa

Thanks for the details bbop. Water Works park is on one of Des Moines' main bike paths, so -- like a hundred or so other attendees -- I rode my bike to the show. This mean I didn't notices the protesters. Thankfully. That illuminates Jeff's comments a bit. So sick of my state. It was different 5-10 years ago.

  3. I can't offer much except to say it was a pretty perfect night. Band was in great form. They all seemed to be enjoying themselves. Jeff, at one point, asked the audience if masks were tyranny or love (paraphrasing). Referenced Gabe's Oasis (an old Iowa City venue) before playing Box Full of Letters.

There are few things in life that make me as happy as Wilco live.

    Drive By Truckers

There is a small (<5%) chance I hit that show. Driving to Chicago this afternoon. I plan on arriving at my friend's place at Wicker Park around 7 PM. I really doubt we'll make it up, but it's not out of the question.

Squeeze. First show since Wilco, November 2019, I think.

So, funny story, to me at least. I didn't see an opener announced on the ticket, website, or anything. There was an opener. They said their name, but I didn't catch it. Nice enough jangly pop, none of it recognizable. Then they played "Out Of My Head" by Fastball. They then proceeded to play two more Fastball radio hits. It WAS Fastball.

If you like Hunt For the Wilderpeople check out Jojo Rabbit, another Taika film!

Seen it at least 3 times. The first time, I was kind of disappointed in the ending. The second and third time, I cried. Not sure how it hit me differently, but it sure did!

As a drum nerd I've really enjoyed Glenn's Instagram project of a beat a week. Most of them would take me at least an hour to learn, and some of them I might never get, but they're another inspiring piece of evidence of this guy's creativity.

Anyhow, he recently posted a beat that was kind of a variation of IATTBYH but said he got into it after someone pointed out the Olivia Rodrigo song "Deja Vu" as a kindred spirit. I'm sometimes pop music ignorant, so I checked it out, and I have to think the drummer and/or producer used the Wilco track as a reference for their arrangement. Not identical by any means, but a similar approach. I don't call that a rip off either, it's a surprising (but fruitful?) lineage.

Check it out if you're curious, I jumped ahead to where the drums come in, but if you want all the teenage drama you can start at the top:

Very cool catch. Sharing that (and IATTBYH) with her. She's a big Olivia fan. She's damn talented. My kids are helping me to appreciate 21st century pop music...

Cramming in those shows while I can

    Squeeze/Hall and Oates

Squeeze is playing Des Moines in a couple of weeks. My wife and I have tickets. Apparently they've sold less than half the venue and there's speculation it could get canceled. That would seriously bum me out.

  9. I remember '74-'75 being played heavily on the adult alternative radio station in Des Moines when it came out. I liked it enough to buy the CD. Listened to it a few times and it didn't really click. I had completely forgotten about them, until a few years ago and re-listened. Still really love that song, but nothing else has soaked in. I will give Fun & Games a spin soon.

I had the same discussion with a friend of mine last week.  My top 3 are:

    Can't You Hear Me Knocking

    Monkey Man

    Sympathy For The Devil

I was thinking Monkey Man and Sympathy are in mine too.

Monkey Man because I discovered late in my life. My brother put it on a mix tape for me when I was nearly 30. Not sure how such a rocking song didn't make it on the radio more.

Sympathy because it's Sympathy, right? Also, the history major in me appreciates it.

My third might be Waiting on a Friend. Weird choice? I was a product of the MTV age and liked that video much more than Start Me Up. Also, I became a big jazz fan in my 20s and had the chance to see Sonny Rollins live, so when I learned that he played the sax solo on that song, it propelled my love for it.

All of this Lou got me to put this one on.  One of my faves.  It's a shame that he and Quine couldn't get along better.

It's a shame he and ___ couldn't get along better could be one of Lou's epitaphs.
