  1. Not to be too off topic here (I'd say Wingspan is a place to start branching out from) but is that James Coburn on the cover of "Band on the Run"? I just grabbed it and I can't believe I never noticed before. I still have the poster inside too! Who the hell else is on this cover? How did I never notice this?!

  2. Well to mix it up a bit, it was sad, but timely to see Maddux go. His career wins total will likely never be passed again.

Yeah, but, he was a Brave.

This thread is going to turn into "name every Wilco song" soon.

Nope 'cause no one wants to walk to home plate to "Hate It Here"

  3. In X-Ray, Ray said that David Watts was a friend/promoter who had a thing for Dave. I'd have to go back and look but I think it was something like that. He also said several times that Preservation Act 1 and 2 was his best work. I've listened to it several times and am having a hard time getting into it. Anyone?

I'm sure it could be two different people. Wikipedia David Watts. He's a member of Parliment married to a woman whose maiden name is Davies. Even if it is just a fun coincidence, that song is great!

  4. "Something Else... " maybe my favorite, if only because "David Watts" is about his sister's husband.

One thing I've noticed and talked to others about is that neither Ray, nor Dave, tried to hide in their voices, that they were English. So many U.K. artists (including the Beatles) tried to hide that accent.

(For the Beatles: Paul kept his accent for effect[or affect]).

  5. I can relate to a lot of your gripes, they are a bit jock rock and nothing they've done lately has pleased my ears all that much. I think where you're wrong is that albums like S/T and the Colour and the Shape will be remembered fondly for being good nineties rock music. That said, they are unusual to be the efforts of a drummer after his famous rock band expired. The only drummer I can think of that was so successful as songwriter/band leader after his band expired is Phil Collins.

Neil Peart is gonna kick our asses!

  6. Oh bother. Grohl coughs up outdated jock rock. None of his albums amount to a hill of beans or will be remembered. Wilco is a band that will continue to live well beyond any of the band members. In the catalogue of American rock music, Grohl will be remembered as the last of many drummers for a three album meteoric rock band, not for anything he's done since. He may be a perfectly nice guy, but his music is shit.

  7. I got a question that would fit in here. Anyone have any experience micing up a banjo? I'm talking distances, placement and the like. Also, homemade pop filter - I've seen designs that use nylon and a wire hanger. Do you guys think this would work just as well or should I shell out the 30ish bucks for a legit one?

The banjo is tricky for sure. I've had good luck using a SM58 and placing it a couple of feet away (18 inches, I just measured). I play hard and the space gives room for the room sound to kind of seep in.

  8. You are right about the song, and it is indeed, Wilco.

I don't like to change lists and files names and whatnot unless absolutely necessary. Maybe I should have in this case. Although, I don't listen to every show - so I don't always catch these sort of things.

Oh - and there are several of us who work for The Owl, not just me. It's a team effort.

And we all appreciate your efforts! :music
