  1. Took the wife to see it over the weekend. Well, it was suprising when we noticed "At my window sad and lonely". Its actually a very cool Jeff solo version, I would guess an outtake from the 'Mermaid" sessions. The music was good and kept me interested. The movie had some tense moments, it just didn't really do it for me.

  2. I thank Nels is a fantastic guitar player. But, I will stand in the minority here. I just didn't get it. Maybe it was the quality of the recording, but with that being said I just didn't like it. I will reserve my final judgement for the cd but it would really have to knock me off my ass.

  3. I have been into MMJ for a while but I can attest to their music being a "grower". I was not too impressed until I listened over and over. Especially "At Dawn", at first I heard a few slow tempo songs that I thought were ok. After listens four or five, I discovered complex songs with good melody. As I explored more the more I grew to love them. I must also catch them live. I have had the chance but things just keep coming up and I just missed them. I am making promises to see them no matter what this time.

  4. I personally went to Indy early in the tour and Columbus,Ohio in the middle of the tour. I can say for me it was no comparison. Columbus was by far the best. Everything from the setlist(which was one of the best of the tour) to the debut of the Nudie suit, Columbus was a killer. The sound in the Wexner was also good.

  5. SO I love this band and have followed themfor years buying albums etc. I just wonder if we are seeing the end of the norm. Has Jeff decided to not look back. VW commercials and now SNL and crashing the plans of 1200 fans most of them that would travel to charleston. this isnt like NYC where everyone rides a subway to show and home. I was going over 200 miles each way.

But when you walk away from your paying customers to get paid by the big TV folks I just get to thinking we might be seeing the end or a good thing. Waiting til august to see the band play a year old album will be a let down. I know they will try to make it up to us but just not sure how you go out in front of 1200 folks and say hey sorry we F*** you in February but hell we are back now....

Hope time will heal but this is a cheap shot. Why not say hey we can do it before we head to austraila in a couple of weeks.

Jeff you owe us big for this one. And Lorne you suck......

    :ohwell

While I understand your pain, I believe Wilco gives more than enough to the fans as is. What else can they do to be more fan friendly?

Its not as if the show was cancelled, and do you just go to a show to hear the songs off the latest cd? A Wilco concert is a celebration of their music , allow time to pass on this one, it will be just as good in the summer.

  6. I still put Jay's voice above just about anyone else in the genre.

And, Trace still gets more play, experiences more rotations than just about any other disk in my No Depression catalog. If there is anything negative to be said about Jay and/or Son Volt, it is that he/they never quite lived up to the potential hinted at on the instant classic that is Trace

  7. I really enjoyed Phish until 99/2000. Frankly, I was glad to see them part. The music really sucked before hey parted. If they do get back together, I would hope for a change of how they did things. They just kept wanting things to get bigger and bigger until they were not enjoyable anymore. Too many hipsters ,druggies and hangers on towards the end. I know there were many rumblings about drugs in the band towards the end. My feelings would be mixed over any reunion.

  8. Digital Slap!

The grateful dead are not a jam band! They never have been and never will be!

These bands SCI, WSP,STS9, DB, Umph. those are jambands.

Cheese used to be decent in the mid 90's when they were still bluegrassy then they started to get all techno-ish in their jams.

But this scene has turned into nothing more then a place to foster drugs addicts. Try going to a festival now and its just a bunch of kids who are running rampent on E and dont even give a rats ass about the music.

Even Yonder has gone much more poppy in the last year.

Sorry to rain on the parade. I'm glad Cheese went out with a bang but I'm glad Nershi will be making some real music. I saw him sit in with Railroad earth at 10lkf last year and it was awesome!

If you guys like bluegrass and the dead you need to check out Railroad earth they are the best thing the scene has to offer.

Amen, this person said it perfect. Also in my opinion, the last few years of Phish were just the same. I really couldn't wait for them to hang it up for good. There will never be anything like The Grateful Dead again, there truly were one of a kind!!!!!!!!

  9. The fact that Wilco doesn't explore the same sounds album after album makes them revelant period. Although I love YHF, I would no longer be a fan if the followup was YHF part II under another name. I get excited about each new release because I know it is gonna be a different approach. I love watching the posts grow on this board when a new song is played live, until it evolves into what it will become on the studio effort. With all do respect to Spoon and other bands mentioned in the original post, those bands could,t hold Wilcos' jock on their best day. Each release doesn't have to be a sonic experiment. Actually, I have heard Jeff qouted as saying that the songs on SBS are more complicated to play stripped down acoustic than YHF or Ghost. Even though the songs in principle are simple the arrangements show off a complicated skilled band at their height. Now that to me is revelant.

  10. I have been taking my daughter to Wilco shows since she was 8 yrs old. It has always been a good experience, she meet Jeff a few summers back in Pittsburgh and he sang Forget The Flowers for her. I would say have fun at the show!!!!!!!

  11. I was young and in college when both of these bands came out. Nevermind was a great cd, as far as live goes, I have seen them both PJ multiple times(only because Kurt is dead) and the only time I have heard Nirvana sound decent was on Unplugged. PJ can really deliver a blow live, great set list every night and lots of energy. No comarrison PJ by far. Cobain was always way too fucked up to be good night after night.

  12. Whether I GET IT or not was NOT the point...I meant the thumbs up for digging HMD for it's "dumb lyrics" as Justin so NICELY pointed out to us yesterday :P

And, for the record, I of the "you people" DO GET IT, sir!!!

I know I'm a Wheel is a political song, just not what I consider a "deep" thinking song. But A GREAT song none the less, I just dislike HMD.

  13. Right. Its a different band, but I guess sometimes its difficult to hear it as such. I avoided the spinoffs for a long time because I guess I just figured "Meh, its not the same." Of course its not the same. It never will be. But you're right, there is something about hearing the music being played live. Really, it would be a shame if Bobby and Phil weren't out there still playing those songs. But you have to kind of accept the music for what it is. You're right, if you go into it making comparisons then you're probably not going to going to enjoy it.

Amen to Bobby and Phil keeping it alive, that is as fresh of a view that I have heard in awhile, I would love to see Ryan Adams and Phil together.

  14. Well, Jerry is definitely still missed. This was my first experience with Ratdog--honestly, I had always heard they kind of suck. Well, "suck" is maybe not the right word, but a lot of what I heard was from people who saw them when you did--not long after Jerry passed, and I think back then it was awkward because the band is playing GD songs and there are spots you just expect to hear Jerry's voice or his guitar or whatever. And then its kind of a kick in the gut when it doesn't come.

Time has probably healed a lot of that, I guess. Its still a little awkward, tho, to hear Bob sing songs that have been etched into my mind with Jerry's voice. And Ratdog is maybe not quite as adventurous, musically. But if you can detach yourself from expecting it to sound exactly like a GD concert, then Ratdog is pretty enjoyable on its own merits.

I hear you about the lack of quality shows in Columbus. I just moved back here after being out on the east coast for a long time and I'd kind of forgotten that. Strangely, tho, I'm a lot more likely to go to shows now that I'm back here. I was living in CT and it was always like 90 minute haul if I wanted to go into NYC or whatever and I'm a family guy now, so I almost never went to shows because it took me too far away from home. Now it only takes me like 15 min to get to downtown C-bus from my house......if only more decent bands would show up! :lol

I hear you on the family man thing, although my daughter has grown up going to Wilco shows it is always tough to get out anymore. Here is to hoping we will get a local Wilco show here soon, my last few shows have been like 3 hour drives from here. :worship

  15. Those are some pretty HARSH words there, Justin, dontcha think?!?

EDIT: Is there something WRONG with writing a song just for FUN?!? Does every set of lyrics have to have some deep, meaning behind them to make it worthy of listening?!?

I don't think every song has to have some deep meaning, I love "I'm A Wheel" I personally think HMD sucks. From the beginning especially with the drum thing it just sounds fake and manufactured. The lyrics I can sorta relate to I grew up unfortunately with the Heavy Metal scene. In concert I always find a reason to excuse myself for a drink or the bathroom when this one is played.

  16. I have been to one Ratdog show prior. I have to admit I did not enjoy, it was shortly after Jerry died and I was still in the post Jerry funk. I do think I would enjoy a Ratdog show now thou. Thx for the post, I live in Cols. and feel ashamed I missed since I complain so much about the lack of quality shows that actually bother to stop in Columbus.
