  1. What a great band they were in the early 90's. After S. Dream, i tuned out. What a bunch of self indulgent bullshit, I hope Billy Corigan never makes music again. Sorry to be so harsh and I know artists have to experiment but his vision has been lost for a long time, at least on where to take his music. It really was my hope he would return to the guitar driven fuzzy sound of early releases, but oh well, at least I won't have to waste money finding out how bad he sucks.

  2. People who don't enjoy the commercials simply turn the TV off. They are not your songs they belong to Jeff and the boys. It was his decision and his music so if you are close minded enough to hate Wilco over this, you were not a "true" fan anyhow. Things I do not like I simply do not allow to take up any of my time. Wilco is not indie rock they do not have anything to prove to all you wannabe hipsters who think everythig they adore is sacred and exempt from the public. I first didn't know what to think, although I finally decided Jeff would never compromise his music just for a few bucks. If Starbucks and VW help get the word out them so be it. One thing I know for sure, all these so called indie or hip radio stations would not touch Wilco with a 10 ft. pole. It is the same shit over and over. I am so sick of so called cool people like Bjork, or Thurston Moore I could puke. While I certainly do not like every song Wilco makes, in fact there is usually a stinker on every cd, they are still the best band around and any fan who bitches about Wilco needs to get a life. These guys are so fan friendly it is unreal. Just thank about all the Free music and bonus tracks they have given us in the past year, let alone webcasts etc. So my words are shut the fuck up you are not Jeff, you do not influence his thinking and if you dont like the direction of the band go back and find another band until they upset you with trying to actually get the music out there so people outside of top 40 radio can hear it.

  3. I have to admit I usually hate bands who sell their music to commercials, especially new music. I have to admit I love them. The commercials are done very tastfully and VW has a great product to sell. Hell, I have even thought of trading in my BMW for a new VW!!!!!!!!

  4. have read a number of these interviews and fail to see this "commercial development" you seem to refer to.

Also, I have listened to Sky Blue Sky roughly 100 times by now and nowhere in there did I hear anything that screamed at me "Car Ad." Also, "Is That The Thanks I Get?" was a song Jeff wrote for another singer to sing, if I remember the story right.

None of these songs were written specifically for a TV commercial, but you seem to think they were; that this is an album filled with car jingles. I think you're wrong.

Your bitching and moaning that they've "sold out" is completely outdated. So what? They have a few fucking songs in commercials. Why does that get your panties in a bunch?

And, most importantly, how exactly does Wilco's music being in a commercial effect your life in such a negative manner? Don't like it? Ignore it and go on your merry way.

And if it makes you hate the band so much you refuse to buy the albums or go to the shows...good. One less person I have to battle with for tickets.

AMEN TO THAT IF YOU DONT LIKE IT DONT BUY IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. I think SBS is great. Enough of the whining from people who don't like it, Wilco is not here to please only you. If you don't like it, don't listen to it and sell it at the local used cd shop. Just don't tell me in two months after you have seen them live how great it is.

  6. I gotta say I must retract some of my opinions of SBS. This is one incredible piece of music. I am hooked. Upon the second and third complete listen I quit waiting for the bells and wistles and took this record for what it is. One fine piece of simple songwriting and complex arrangements that weave themselves into some of the finest music I have heard in a long time. Nels Cline is a beautiful musician, he simply takes the songs in a different direction. I so much more appreciate him as a member of Wilco than I did pre SBS. There is nothing wrong with Tweedy making a direct adult album, I feel I have grown up to his music and I can really agree with the statement he is making on SBS. I can't wait to hear this live!

  7. While Sky Blue Sky is growing on me, the way all new Wilco releases seem to do until I love them to death. I do miss Jay in the band. I have long since missed the atmosphere around the band in the late 90's and early 2000's. I am not trying to be a hater here. I do Love the creativity the new unit can display. I do think the lyrics from Jeff are a bit weak, but after reading some interviews with Jeff, I think he planned it that way. SBS is a good Wilco release, but I do see a steep decline in overall quality of the music, starting with AGIB. The live shows are indeed where I miss Jay the most. I used to love the feeling of anything can happen next at a Wilco show. Although the sound quality is great I miss the energy Jay brought to the table.

  8. I Love the B-Boy's. I love the idea of some instrument only shows, but I gotta say their stuff has been lame as of late. Hello Nasty was ok, I really didn't care for the last one. My freind and I were just talking the other day that the B-Boys need to come out and knock our socks off with the new one.

  9. I just wanna say before I ad my experience that it has been really cool reading all the posts here. I was at some of the shows mentioned. Here is mine, 05-05-99 Bogarts Cincinnati Ohio. Bought three tickets, Myself, future wife and friend. To make make a long story short. Friend calls day of show with backstage access. says if i cant leave by 2p. that i have to find another ride. My future wife and myself drive seperate. Never meet Jeff. Turns out my friend gave Jeff some pills before the show. Later on around 4am or so my friend is leaving party with the band, driving home and is arrested with possession of several drugs. Anyhow, what an experience, the show by the way was great, although Jeff was clearly fucked up, Jay was on fire, it was also the first time I saw Leroy play with Wilco.

  10. Great Post LW, Sad some people make new Wilco fans feel stupid when they post but I know where they are coming from. I am way past the "being angry" because Wilco has changed and the fanbase has expanded. I have come to realize that with any band creative and worth listening to, will ultimately come into some sort of commercial success. I do miss the "bar band" days of the mid to late 90's but I also really enjoy the theatre setting and sound of the band today. Come to grip with it " Sky Blue Sky" will be sold at Starbucks and I am just fine with that. This is still one of if not the most creative band going today and I say welcome all new fans.

  11. I personally do not care to meet musicians. I like to enjoy the music for what it is. I don't want some preconcieved notion that so and so is a cool guy, only to be put off when it is a bad night and the musician dont want to be bothered. I have just always enjoyed keeping my distance and enjoying the music rather that getting up close.

  12. Cool side fact about Jay and Ken. I do not own a copy of Earth Rolls On, I have heard some of the music on it and never knew it was them. I will have to buy a copy for myself. Personally, for me there has been something missing in Shaver since the death of his son and guitar player Eddie.

  13. Shaver Fing Rules. He has lived a hard life, no wonder he doesn't mind shooting someone in the face. Someone posted earlier about Wilco playing with him at some point. I don't think they have but if it is true I would love to hear it.

  14. Last night I listened to a show from 1998 (1998.09.12) that I just downloaded, and was amazed by the tunes (it's an interesting mix--I remember that at least as to the last half of the show the taper's mic was squarely in the path of the gutsy/bassy speaker section of Jay's rig...), and started pondering the inclusion of pedal steel at that time and the exclusion of it now.

I am fascinated by much of Nels' playing, both the pre-Nels material and post, so don't presume this thread to be a knock at his playing at all. And I enjoy some of the lap steel he does. But I kept thinking to myself last night "wouldn't it be great to hear Nels (or Pat for that matter--actually with Pat on steel and Nels doing his crazy-speed and subtle flourish thing, that might even be better) rip it up on a traditional pedal steel?"

That thought led to the realization that it wouldn't only sweeten up some of the old tunes, but might add a great texture to the new stuff. I can easily hear some great pedal steel riffs and whines in "Thanks I Get" (instead of the rather elementary little riffs that are in the verses and bridges now), and think it could add a lot of depth to "What Light."

Then again, it strikes me that the band may simply feel that they've moved on from the pedal steel and the "alt country" slant of things...

    Thoughts?

If enough of you think the pedal steel addition would be beneficial, I'll simply call Jeff and have the change made. :ermm

    :P

  15. Tim is great. He plays often in Columbus and vicinity>(he is from Ohio). My wife and I have been in to him for awhile, everyone who enjoys good folksy, well written songs should check him out.
