Hey all, I haven't posted in forever but since I saw bbop was going to be making the Ontario shows I figured I'd do my best at a recap.
- Kingston is a small university town right in between Toronto & Ottawa, sort of infamously the hometown of Gord Downie & The Tragically Hip & a necessary touring spot for every Canadian band at some point
- I haven't looked this up but I think it's safe to say Jeff or Wilco have never played there before last night, seeing Kingston on the itinerary was pretty shocking but also pretty cool, looks like they tried to do as many shows around Toronto as they could, & lot's of Toronto Wilco buds were out
- The Grand Theatre is a 750ish seat classic community theatre vibe, maybe the smallest room I've ever seen Jeff or Wilco play in (I don't believe it completely sold out but was close)
- setlist was pretty close to the Royal Oak one, Remember The Mountain Bed & Misunderstood were the only two differences that I can tell
- new songs sounded good, the first one he played where the chorus went "spray paint me gold..." was a real standout I thought
- Jeff was in a super good mood, half the fun of these solo shows for me is just hearing him talk & interact with the audience in all the ways he doesn't w/ Wilco
- had a big long anecdote about getting arrested at the border coming into Canada because someone in their camp forgot to remove their weed, apparently they were handcuffed & everything (there could be some exaggerations there)
- some quotes that I can remember "they (the border police) forced play Cinnamon Girl behind my back w/ the handcuffs on", "I was already picking out a face tattoo & a boyfriend", there was also some playful banter w/ some dude complimenting his whistling, people sneezing etc.
I'm sure other people will have a whole lot more to add so I'll leave it there. See y'all in Ottawa on Wednesday.

After managing to pull amazing seats for two nights in Chicago I got shutout of both Massey Hall shows, very odd..
Well I managed to pull singles for each night so I take this back, but boy was that frustrating.

It's tough to really figure it out upon my first two listens. Some real standouts & some others that require more listening, or maybe not.
Some of Jeff's best lyrics in quite a while I think, especially compared to Star Wars which I felt leaned a lot on the "phonetic transcribing" he's done a lot of since TWL.
I get why they separated Star Wars & Schmilo, both do feel a lot different but you always do wonder what could have been w/ records released so close together. IMO there is a stone cold classic 12-song record between these two & the Tweedy record that could maybe be the best one in the Wilco catalogue. Though I will never complain about having 44 Jeff songs ever, EVER.

Also because I can't turn my brain off from this stuff, I posted the chords in the tabs section for folks that want to play along.

From the press release:
"Schmilco finds band leader Tweedy in a state of alienation: how to cope with dissonance between self-identity and the public perception of his band – to maintain an innocence and earnestness even as some have come to see him as more (or less) than human, and Wilco as something other than six musicians?
“I think this record is ‘joyously negative’,” Tweedy said. “It’s sad in a lot of ways but not in any that reach a conclusion of doom or hopelessness… I just had a lot of fun being sour about the things that upset me.”
Really like the new song.

I've known about this happening for a while but here's Jeff confirming it.
Get pumped y'all!

Hey all! Just saw this thread now, thanks so much for the support!

That was pretty great. Super gutsy thing for a band to do that at that big of a headlining festival set.
-
Is it just me or is the hi hat mic feeding back like crazy?
-
They sound unbelievably tight for never playing these songs live before. They really kept this whole thing under wraps.
-
Yeah You Sattelite is awesome live. What a two chord wonder.

Looks like we're getting the full album off the bat.

That sounds like a publishing thing. It's possible he signed something for that one record but that seems weird to me.

So Jim O'Rourke was definitely not involved, Tom Schick produced it w/ Jeff. Bob Ludwig mastered.
-
Production is really similar to what Jeff has been doing in the Loft for other people (like zero reverb, super small amp guitar tones).
-
SUPER Loose Fur vibes folks.

I texted bbop the setlist right after but here it is:
Diamond Light
Flowering
Summer Noon
World Away
New Moon
High As Hello
Low Key
IATTBYH (start of solo section)
New Madrid
Hummingbird
Passenger Side
Spiders
Born Alone
Jesus Etc.
IATMWLY
Shot In The Arm
You Are Not Alone (w/ band)
Cana-dee-an Stars (w/band)
No encore.
Big difference from the Detroit show to this one, band sounded much more confident and comfortable, songs had more dynamics etc.
Jeff was hilarious, sang a bit of Journey (who were headlining Bluesfest that day) had a few other really good quips too, can't really remember off the top of my head right now.
All around awesome.

Hey all, figured it was my duty to give you the rundown on the new Tweedy 10".
Side A - the actual Diamond Light tune. Sounds really good, super boxy sounding drums, lots of good crazy sounds in the background. Way more fleshed out and full sounding compared to the live show IMO. Jeff double tracked his voice on it and there is a ton of GROOVE, sort of cross between Bull Black Nova and Radiohead's Where I End And You Begin.
Side B - picks up where side A left off, instrumental noise piece, not unlike the stuff off of the Wilco book.
Sound-wise it's similar to "I'll Sing It", not totally lo-fi but definitely not as hi-fi sounding as the past few Wilco records. The Wilco book songs are a really good comparison I think.

Noticed those new amps. Anyone know what they are?
