  1. The playing is fine all the way around. The only thing that grates is Weir singing Jerry's tunes. He just sprays the words around as he damn well pleases with no regard to metre or rhythm. Hey, we all know that NOBODY is going to sing it like The Big Guy, but there are certain tunes, like last night's Stella, that are (in my opinion) pretty "sacred", and if you're not going to give it the reverence it deserves then just do the fucker as an instrumental. I've seen the DNB do it like that (with Sless on pedal steel) and it was beautiful.

Yup. I was thinking the same thing in Philly during Standing on the Moon. Whomever is singing doesn't have to SOUND like Jerry, but at least the vocals should follow the pattern of the music. Whatever Bob was doing wasn't matching up with me singing along, as I expected the vocals to go. Mayer doesn't really sound like Jerry, vocally, but his vocals feel "right."

Anyhow, i thought Philly was a blast. MSG 2 seemed epic via the webcast, really wished I was there. Wish I was going to more shows.

  2. Success! Got GA for both nights Cap Theater. Initially I had two tix for one of the shows, I forgot the default was for two tix (so annoying) so I had to clear that and start over. Fortunate to still get one. Interestingly I was able to get both nights on the same order page, rather than having to check out for each show individually, which is how (I think) it used to work on Frontgate (and still does for TM?)

  3. Yeah, I selected Brooklyn  seats based on the interactive map and by the time I entered the captcha code the seat was gone. Finally resorted to the "best seat available" option and went through with that. Thought I secured tix for both nights  but it turns out that my orders didn't go through initially!! Don't know if it was a CC problem (I have a new card with old number/new expy date) , or with the TM page itself. As I've said before I'm finding these new "smart device friendly" webpages to not be all that user friendly! Unfortunately when I went back through the process again the Friday ticket was the one that went through (I would have preferred Sat if I had to pick just one). Is there something about multiple windows in the same browser now? Seems like it wouldn't let me try for two diff nights, at the same time - kept bumping me to one show date page only?

  4. A few people were standing during Star Wars, and it didn't seem that anyone bothered them to sit... A handful more got up for Handshake Drugs. Then Camera came in, and simultaneously everybody in the theater said "Fuck this shit!" and got up and got shakin.

I must be getting old as even I don't mind sitting at some shows nowadays... Maybe this is the way to go..  A seated 30-minute set, and then rocks out. Everybody wins.

  5. Those were definitely the best bits there. Earlier Jeff had also said something about how the crowd was so nice and how he felt like "we don't deserve you. I wanted to ask if everyone was having a good time, but that seemed too desperate." As I mentioned, I didn't really have much of a sense of the crowd but if I had to guess, it just felt very respectful. Polite, even. For instance, a friend looked around during Spiders and very few people seemed to even be moving, much less headbanging during the breakdowns. I just remember like 10 years ago when that song was new, how some crowds just went absolutely crazy for it with pogoing and the like. I guess we've all gotten a little bit older.

Well, not every crowd can be Ithaca, y'know ;)

Sorry you missed that one!  I'll post some pics/addl. comments for that show over the weekend.

Dead and Co. full tour.  I'm surprised they are playing such large venues.  Will they be able to fill them?  Not sure many Mayer fans will want to see him play Dead tunes.  I kind of want to go to this.  Oteil is pretty great and we'd definitely get a good drums/space.

Well, the best pair of seats I can pull up now for the Philly show is behind the stage. So yes, looks like there is good demand.

  7. I was *thisclose* to finishing my post when my browser crashed. So, in lieu of typing it all over again, here is my 2013 mix CD tracklisting:

    01. Lightning Bolt, 02. Mind Your Manners - PEARL JAM

    03. Wishing Well - TRAPPER SCHOEPP & THE SHADES

    08. Run, Engine, Run -TRAPPER SCHOEPP & THE SHADES

    09. In the Kingdom - MAZZY STAR

    10. Solitaire - MARK LANEGAN

    11. Another Small Thing in Her Favour - RICHARD THOMPSON

    12. Yellow Moon - PEARL JAM

    13. Calling Cards - NEKO CASE

    14. I’m Not The Loving Kind - MARK LANEGAN

    15. Where’s Home? - RICHARD THOMPSON

    16. Lay Myself Down - MAZZY STAR

    17. Lonely Street - MARK LANEGAN

    18. Famous Friends Along the Coast - JOSEPH ARTHUR

    19. How Loud Your Heart Gets - LUCIUS

The 2010s list included a lot of The Spring Standards, Old 97s, Joseph Arthur, Lucius, Drive-By Truckers, and Foo Fighters.

  8. Get them all.

Besides what you're already getting, By The Light of the Moon is excellent. This Time is overlooked. The Town and the City is great. The Ride, and Ride This are awesome too.

    It's all good.

But, definitely go see them live any chance you get. They're a great live band.

Very much agreed. I'd say By The Light of the Moon is my favorite. Apparently the band doesn't think so, I guess it wasn't a good experience for them. Agreed on This Time and Town and City.  Will the Wolf Survive is another great record, maybe my 2nd favorite. Real friendly guys, they often do autograph sessions after the shows.

  9. "Receiving pumpkins" line was the best thing I've ever read in a review.

This was not too bad either:
"the height of 'The joke Explained' with that dylanian Tweedy stop on a certain aroma posed with Velvet, and are asking for a change of pace. Too bad this does not come with 'You satellite' leaden and boring to death distorted."

"aroma posed with velvet" and "boring to death distorted" sound like they could be actual Jeff Tweedy lyrics. Pretty good review there.

But really, even the Spanish review invoked the Beatles. Does every record review need to do that? I'm sure Jeff digs the Beatles, but it's probably been a well since he discovered them and delved into their catalog. I don't see him sitting around listening to Beatles albums every day, looking for inspiration.

  10. 1. YHF.

    2. Mermaid Avenue i/II

    3. Ghost

    4. Wilco the Album

    5. The Whole Love

    6. Summerteeth

    7. Being There

    8a. AM

    8b. Star Wars

    10. SBS

I first saw them in 1999, so Summerteeth and Mermaid Avenue I were probably the first albums I heard. But quickly followed by MA II, BT, and AM - I delved in fully early on.

  11. Pearl Jam - Daughter
    https://youtu.be/RiqgTPmkfek?t=99 (1:40 in)

Short but sweet - amazed they haven't really extended this one much live.

Los Lobos - Road To Gila Bend

    https://youtu.be/2qx_uraT9dk?t=127 (2:07 in)

I saw Trey guest with LL around 2007 or so, and he took the solo. David Hidalgo had to wave him off to finish! Trey would have kept going and going...That's like the only show of theirs I haven't found on tape too, would like to revisit that night.

    The Jayhawks - Martin's Song

    https://youtu.be/LyQCoB186RY?t=104 (1:45 in)

Pearl Jam - In My Tree

    https://youtu.be/FZU0SvCfHJs?t=203 (3:25 in)

I don't know that Mike and Stone usually do a  double outtro "solo" but I think there is a good tape out there, maybe Melbourne 1998, where you can hear them both clearly.

Soul Asylum - Some to Return

    https://youtu.be/U_lGnFtKJrk?t=155 ( 2:35 in)

SA don't have many long guitar solos, at least on their albums, but ten seconds here is pretty sweet.Actually, Dan Murphy's solo in Cartoon is at about twice as long, but I'll give the nod to the solo on Sometime to Return.

    Bonus
Steve Cropper with Pearl Jam - (Sittin' on the) Dock of the Bay

    https://youtu.be/Wl3NeDo99GE?t=160 (2:40 in)

  12. We have a few threads on this topic already, for further research.

At this point (or rather, since about 2001 or so), I'm really only interested in listening to shows I have attended. But here are some older gems.

December 14, 1996 - featuring Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow

    May 10, 1997 - featuring a bunch of covers

November 19, 1999 - both the sdbd and the aud are good listens.  Very representative show of that year.

September 19, 2000 - late Jay-era show including some pre-YHF release material. Fairly long set for that time.

July 4, 2001 - essentially the YHF "record release show." FM broadcast. Grant Park broadcast from August 12, 2000 is also very good.

PS -  nice avatar. So cool that Bloom County is back!

  13. Well that was odd. The ticket sales page defaulted to two tickets; I was only trying to order 1. I cleared my cart and started over, but got the same thing. Next, I didn't think there was an option and debated for a minute about just buying two tix and trying to sell the 2nd. The I finally figured out how to change the number of tickets (the option is at page upper right, away from the other ordering details, so not in my immediate line of sight - when I scrolled down to choose my desired section the ticket selection option went off screen.).  Damn these mobile-friendly websites. Confusing as heck for an old dinosaur desktop user. So, I guess I got a decent seat but might have been even closer had I been able to figure out to do what I wanted to do, in the first place.

    See you in Ithaca.

  14.

The Whole Love has a match for match or two with those songs that might not necessarily sound the same but satisfy a similar itch:

Bull Black Nova - Art of Almost

One Wing - (This does not exist in the catalog)

Solitaire - Rising Red Lung, One Sunday Morning

    Country Disappeared - Black Moon

Born Alone is the One Wing of TWL.

One Sunday Morning is the one that's in its own league.

  15. I think Wilco (The Album) has more highlights…Wilco (The Song), One Wing, Bull Black Nova, You And I, and Country Disappeared are all very solid tunes in my opinion. And I think Solitaire is one of Tweedy’s best-written songs. EVER.

Agreed! Finally someone who gets it. Everlasting Everything is not too shabby either.
