  1. I trekked up to Burlington to see the show with Lucius. SS played first, and for only about 25 mins (Aspenglow or whoever was the 2nd band), so I was kinda bummed, but I guess that show wasn't "their tour", so be it. They ddin't do the new song. How was that one?

Lucius was awesome, They did the last three songs (incl. Harvest Moon with SS on vocals) in the middle of the audience with acoustic accompaniment. That was cool.

  2. I don't think any of PJ's regular albums have ever come with extras. Only the re-releases have. Yield was going to have the live JJJ broadcast from Melbourne, but the got squashed literally at the last minute. Best Buy allowed you to get another CD for free instead. I picked Sweetheart of the Rodeo.

  3. Yes, they said at Solid Sound that he will only do that at Solid Sound from now on.

Can't say that I blame him for wanting to retire that.

Oh I know, I was at SS too. I just wondered if he really followed through on his threat. Rock bands are always saying things on stage, heh.

  4. The snippets they kept throwing out sounded awesome, and then the full versions failed to live up to what I imagined the songs would be. It may be no accident then that my two favorite songs are tunes they did not preview - Yellow Moon and Infallible. Still the album is growing on me - I'd say the sum is greater than any individual parts. My favorite consecutive part of the album is the closing three songs.

Oh, and it looks like they have some great merchandise this time. The last few tours the selections were rather unpalatable.

  5. I went to the show last night at Radio City. It was 100 times better than the show she did at Solid Sound. And there was none of the prolonged between-song guitar tunings that have plagued the last few shows I've seen. She's mixed up the set somewhat from the last few tours, finally. I heard two of my favorites for the first time, "Lion's Jaws" and "Set Out Running," neither of which she has played since I first saw her in 2008. "In California" was also played, giving me new appreciation for it since I've only listed to the album it is on twice. Ended the show with Ragtime.

  6. Joseph Arthur's Ballad of Boogie Christ already is and surely will be one of my all-time favorites. The album starts off great, and each time I think "that's gotta be the best song on the record," the next one is even better.

Picked up the Lucius EP and am looking forward to their album in October. Also looking forward to, in late 2013: Neko Case, and Pearl Jam

Still don't have the new Richard Thompson album, I missed out on his spring tour dates.

I don't know that I've bought any other albums released this year yet, but I have in 2013 acquired albums/EPs, released in the past year or two, by the Spring Standards, Trapper Schoepp and the Shades, and AA Bondy which are brand new bands to me.

  7. Drive-By Truckers - Carl Perkins's Cadillac:

Mark Knopfler - Back to Tupelo

Richard Thompson- From Galway to Graceland

The Who - Real Good-Looking Boy

Pearl Jam - 4/20/02 (Tribute to Layne Staley)

This one falls under the "a bit more vague category" - watch the video/slide show and look for your favorite old hero:
Joseph Arthur - All the Old Heroes

    EDIT: One more -

Rhett MIller - The Believer (Tribute to Elliot Smith)

  8. Not only is "Not For the Seasons" an awesome YHF outtake, but all in all there are at least three variations of it going around. The sparse Jeff solo version, the dynamic Loose Fur version aka Laminated Cat, and the sped-up over-the-top YHF demo version. "Born Alone" is is also one of my recent favorites. You got good taste in Wilco already!

  9. I think the article is very interesting and the follow-up questions are not at all in appropriate. We know how much athletes get paid; it is curious to know the same of musicians whose salaries we pay by buying their concert tickets/tshirts/.albums. As for "can they retire right now," I guess that all depends on how well they have invested, and that's  a whole 'nother matter. All in all it's not a big deal to me and not something I think about when I go to a show. But it is good to see bands being smart and making good business decisions and setting good examples for young aspiring musicians who also want to play music for life and to be able to make a living doing so.

  10. Coming out over the next month or so in four parts.  It was conceived last summer when Dan was still in the band, and a few of the tunes were played on the 2012 tour, so I assume he plays on some if not most/all the tracks.

The first part, out now in digital format only, features Attacking the Beat, Love Will Tear Us Apart, and Shakin' Street.

    Sounds good!

  11. Actually Jeff said that she requested song(s) off YHF that "we were already going to play," so she must have requested HMD/Man Who Loves You. Nothing about her pick not being good enough.

kinda lame that they told the contest winner that her pick was "not good enough", I mean she WON the contest and then won by chance out of 5 people to request a song, doesn't she have the right to request the song she wanted? Instead she was booed on stage..when she didn't know the right album that the song she didn't even want to request was on.

I just think that's poor planning from Wilco's management. If she wanted them to play Jesus Etc...then they should have played it. It's even a little more upsetting considering they only played 1 or 2 songs from Yankee Hotel in the first place..so they couldn't have just picked another song off the only album she probably knew?

  12. So what are your thoughts on Jon Hodgman? Yay or Nay? Personally I liked him at the show, although re-listening to this recording I can tell the jokes are going to get pretty stale.

I thought it was fun at the show. That was kinda the point, I don't think they were thinking about how it would sound on the tapes listened to a thousand times over. On that note, I wish they had tracked the Randomizer and Stump the Band Segments separately, rather than tacked onto the ends of prior songs. Ya know, in case one feels like deleting them to save room on an already maxed-out mp3 player. Good to have the whole thing for posterity though..

  13. I haven't made it to a Steeplecats game yet as I like to get to the fest early and get a good spot up front.  Maybe one of the years I'll arrive a day early to see a game. Baseball fans might also want to make the not-too-far trek to Pittsfield to see summer collegiate ball at Wahconah Park, one of the oldest stadiums in the country.

I stayed near Williamstown and checked out the Clark Museum and the Williams College Museum of Art (free) on my way in to North Adams. There's also some good places to eat there including Papa Charlie's Deli. In North Adams that Public place had a 45 minute wait after the Sunday show. We went to MediTerra instead which was really great and had more vegetarian options.

Nice shout out to Joe Manning, he is a cool guy and his work is great. If you're into that kind of stuff, check out this book Run Of The Mill which has lots of photos of New England mill towns in the 70s when those factories were shutting down.

  14. Thanks for letting us know. I got the white long sleeve t-shirt. The quality is great (not sure yet how it handles a washing) but it runs a size too small small. I'm usually a medium and fortunately I tried it on right then and there and immediately exchanged it for a large.

For those who didn't act fast enough & had stuff sell out on them, or for those who couldn't make it this year, but might dig the designs...All sorts of Solid Sound 2013 Shirts & Posters are available now at the official Wilco Store website
    http://wilco.kungfustore.com/
Well I missed the best parts of the Wilco Yard Sale at Solid Sound (got there late & grabbed some stuff for some friends is all)...and...I even gave away a few baseball hats to some friends camping with me...I was trying to exercise restraint & just bought the one too cool poster (Owl made of instruments)- that was so cool that it had me break my "I've already got 4 or 5 Wilco posters" pledge not to get anymore...
I LOVED the whole Solid Sound experience so much that, by the end, I kind of wished I'd picked up a shirt...or two...loved the "Entering Solid Sound" logo (got it on a sticker), & dug the poster (but not as much as the Owl/Instrument one), but really liked it on the long sleeve shirt, & the short sleeve one with the Wilco subway system "Solid Sound- One Fare" was real cool too...but they were both sold out by Sunday....happily, I was able to get one of each as they just popped up on the website...I may have missed the coffee mugs at the Wilco Yard Sale, but I now have two more shirts to add to my ever growing pile...great ones too...Viva Solid Sound!

  15. I view an unattended blanket as an invitation to occupy. I mean, a couple people can't take up an entire blanket, and the crowd as a whole is going to push forward anyway once the set starts. So get there a respectable time before the band starts and just move up as close as you can without getting in the space of someone who has been standing there for hours. The blankets and chairs do not bother me at all - but the people who try to sneak up front after the set has started and get into my personal space are the worst.

  16. I love how the official setlist on twitter and facebook says that this ITMWLY was Glenn's retirement from standing on his drum stool in the rocker pose before the song starts... It was funny how Tweedy talked about it that night

    Yes, Jeff's telling was funny.

Here's some photos of the Last ITMWLY Drum Stand.

Well, we might see it again. Only at Solid Sound and Only at Joe's Field. Jeff said if you see Glenn do it anywhere else, feel free to throw a glow stick at him, or a beach ball. LOL

  17. Agreed. The mindset for Solid Sound should be to have no expectations.. Typical Wilco concert conventions are dismissed. They want it to be a unique experience, and we should embrace that too. I hope they experiment with something different every year.

I shiould add too that there is plenty to do nearby, and people don't have to eat just at Solid Sound nor hang out there all day. I spent a couple mornings in Williamstown, went to both art museums there, and got lunch on the main street, figuring I would avoid the crowds for at least one meal at the Soild Sound food stands. North Adams itself had a good variety of dining options.

I've only been to the first Solid Sound and can't say I remember the first one being less crowded. I thought the size of the audience was fine.

I also feel like a bit of a geek saying I've seen Tommy numerous times already during his tenure as Soul Asylum's bassist. Was nice to see Wilco rocking out on Color Me Impressed on Friday night, another song I've heard so often from recording from the late 1990s where Wilco did a whole encore of cover songs.
