That is an awesome setlist, thanks for the tip. My favorite JT solo shows are from the February-March 2001 tour. His guitar sounds especially warm, heavy and resonant on those tapes consistently and regardless of taper/venue. Of course I am partial to the Irving Plaza show. Not only was I there, it was my first time seeing him solo, first time hearing the songs that would become YHF (outside of a couple songs that Wilco debuted in 2000), and remains my favorite setlist of all the times I've seen him solo. It was also my introduction to Ben Kweller who opened up.

Jay Bennett fan here, thanks for pointing this out. Other than shows I've been to, or looking at setlists with rare tunes, I don't often blindly delve into the audio archive, so it's nice to have a specific recommendation.

Impossible Germany = noodling for the sake of noodling. Not a huge fan of this tune and the Nels jam, but when the show starts, I get into even the songs I don't normally listen to on the CDs. No piss breaks. I like Handshake Drugs and the outtro noise, but wish they'd get rid of the electronic noise in Via Chicago. It's painful and I've never understood why it gets such big cheers from the audience.
I actually like the Impossible Germany lyrics on their own. At times abstract, at times direct. Typical of Jeff and it works. I interpret the content of the song as the main thing in any relationship, or the "fundamental problem." To know that someone is actually listening. If someone feels they are not being heard in a relationship, that's pretty much the end of things. Even if nothing else is wrong, or perhaps especially when there's "no larger problem," the lack of communication, or response to communication, will become the only problem.
These are the lyrics from BeMyDemon.org, slightly different than what wa sposted above.
Impossible Germany
Impossible Germany
Unlikely Japan
Wherever you go
Wherever you land
I’ll say what this means to me
I’ll do what I can
Impossible Germany
Unlikely Japan
The fundamental problem
We all need to face
This is important
But I know you’re not listening
Oh I know you’re not listening
If this was still new to me
I wouldn’t understand
Impossible Germany
Unlikely Japan
But this is what love is for
To be out of place
Gorgeous and alone
Face to face
With no larger problems
That need to be erased
Nothing more important than to know
Someone’s listening
Now I know
You’ll be listening

- January 16, 2012 - Kathleen Edwards - The Music Hall, Tarrytown, NY. - A free show that another forum member hooked me up with. My introduction to Edwards and I liked her music a lot.
- February 7, 2012 - Mark Lanegan - Bowery Ballroom, New York, NY. - First time seeing Lanegan solo, and showcasing a great new album too.
- February 16, 2012 - Richard Thompson - City Winery, New York, NY. - All-request show including a couple tunes with his son Teddy and some unusual covers.
- July 26, 2012 - Soul Asylum, Joseph Arthur - Bowery Ballroom, New York, NY. - Who knew it would be one of the last times any of us would see Dan Murphy? Great set with new covers thrown into the mix, and Joseph Arthur, whoa, this guy rocks! I guess I saw him open up for Three Fish in 1999, but totally forgot. I'm sorry I spent the last 13 years ignorant of his work.
- July 28, 2012 - Wilco - Ommegang Brewery, Cooperstown, NY. - Best show of the four I went to, best vibe, best sound, the rain didn't hurt a bit, and wow, Either Way!
- September 30, 2012 - Los Lobos - The Music Hall, Tarrytown, NY. - Kiko live. I'm not a huge fan of most of their studio albums, but after this show I totally get Kiko.
- October 23, 2012 - Old 97s, Salim Nourallah and the Travoltas - Webster Hall, New York, NY. - Too Far to Care live. I wish I had been able to see this album live like 3 or 4 times, but work obligations prevented that. House That Used to Be is a killer tune, and they really nailed it this time around. Salim was great too, I hope he continues to tour.
- November 8, 2012 - RNDM - Bowery Ballroom, New York, NY. Awesome show, Joseph Arthur again, Jeff Ament, and Richard "the beast' Stuverud on drums.I still haven't stopped playing their album "Acts." First time I got to meet a member of Pearl Jam too.
- December 30, 2012 - The Spring Standards, Glasslands Gallery, Brooklyn, NY. Saw this band open for Rhett Miller in June and this was the first chance I had to see them being familiar with their music. I hope they continue to put out great stuff and play lots of NYC shows. Nice way to cap the year.

2. Mark Lanegan - Blues Funeral
Yes. This is his best album in a long time, outside of the Soul Savers. I wasn't into Bubblegum at all, but Blues Funeral has gotten me into it.
-
RNDM - Acts (Joseph Arthur, Jeff Ament, Richard Stuverud) and the Travoltas (Salim Nourallah's band) self-titled album have recently shot to the top of my list. I'd probably include the Spring Standards up there but I don't have the album yet - been playing some good new live stuff by them though.

Well the Grounds Crew jacket is super awesome.. Too bad for me I've already got one of those jackets for Rickwood Field (Birmingham) as well as a plain one straight from Dickies. Can't really justify another coat at the moment, and not at 95 bucks. These jackets are super comfortable though and they take a beating and hold up well.. Now if Wilco can get EFF to make a real baseball cap, then I'm in.

Bummed out too, though not terribly surprised. Not surrpised there isn't much love for them on this board either. SA have been flying under everyone's radars the last decade or so, but they have been productive - playing 25-30 shows a year, and introducing new tunes to the setlist even though album releases were few and far between. The Silver Lining (2006) was great. This year's album Delayed Reaction was so-so, 3 great tunes, some old nuggets, and a few I could do without. I guess Dan felt he'd accomplished all he could with them after 30 years.
In a one month span this summer I saw Wilco 4 times and SA three times. All were great shows, but if I had to pick one band or the other on any given night, it would be SA.

Heh. I had advance info Jeff was going to be at that show and I skipped it. Hate driving to Jersey, especially Hoboken.
-
Thanks, indeed it is, or was a song she covered? In any event, it sounds so right when sung by Jeff.

.
How did I not hear about this last fall? Great tune, best of the Whole Love non-album tracks. Just found this on the random youtube sidebar links of some other song I was listening to.
-
I wish they went through this process with an entire album.
Wasn't that YHF?
-
Thanks for the head sup Analogman! I'm not in the Jayhawks loop these days but a Louris solo show should be a good bet.

This, among other things, has created huge furor in the online Pearl Jam community (but not , seemingly, among the Pearl-Jam-fans-who-were-at-the-actual-show community). Seems the desktop jockeys have let it slide that Pearl Jam have been saying "bitch" on stage since at least 1994 ("Satan's Bed," anyone?).
-
+1 for more Sunday Morning! It's one of those songs that even though it is long it doesn't feel long or tiring to me. Impossible Germany on the other hand, I could do with less noodling.
-
Via Chicago opener was pretty common in the late 1990s, or at least on the 1999 tour. Not so much these days. Make me nostalgic for my first show....
-
It doesn't seem as onmipresent on KT as it is in person..... but yes you're right it is there.
-
That's Steve Earle.
Haha, oops, well, I'd never seen a photo of him from way back then, so I didn't recognize him. No beard, no sunglasses.
-
Thanks a lot for posting this. James Alley Blues would be great to hear again indeed.
That guy picking his ear while he introduced the band creeped me out.
-
Mainly just on that song. The noise on Via Chicago kills the song for me. It's painful. I'd rather not hear them play it at all if that's how they will do it from here on in. The drone on Less Than You Think, the nosie at the end of Handshake Drugs, etc, I'm fine with that stuff, but not this.
just on that song? or noise in general?
-
I can't stand the noise on Via Chicago live. The versions from 2004 ish are nice, thinking of Radio City/live album era. I don't think they did the noise then.
-
Thanks a lot! Not on FB, so I'll "like" this here.
Here's a link to flac & mp3 recordings of the show. Be sure to LIKE the Songs For The Asking Facebook fan page as a courtesy.

I would like something a little more substantial out of a ballcap. Not necessarily a 5950, but maybe something in-between that and what they sold. Guess I could always buy a Washington Nationals / Senators or Winnpeg Whips hat and pretend the W stands for Wilco. I restrained myself this tour and only bought the key chain tag. I vote for more of the little, inexpensive, goodies.

Check out the High Falls, an impressive waterfall downtown.
Thanks for all the info. Friday is my 50th birthday, and my wife and I will be at the show, but I know next to nothing about Rochester. This is helpful. We'll be there, and really looking forward to it.
BTW, I am in the process of stuffing the request box with "When You Wake Up Feeling Old". Feel free to contribute...

Awesome live albums
in Someone Else's Song
Posted
Yes, Live at Leeds, the live recording of all live recordings
Pink Floyd - Ummagumma live disc
Richard Thompson - Small Town Romance, The Chrono Show, 1000 years of Popular Music
Nirvana - Unplugged - the definitive album of that series
Soul Asylum - After the Flood - full of rare tunes, early versions of later studio cuts, and covers.
Guess I'd have to give a vote to Pearl Jam - Live on Two Legs, as not counting the 875 shows they've released it is their only proper live "album" (oh, I guess they did two, but Live on Ten Legs looks awful).
