  1. I think the thing with John Popper was that Jeff went in to the office get a band aid and John Popper was going around the room giving people cigars, and when he got to Jeff he closed the cigar box. LOL. The Clients sparked a conversation that "John Popper was dead (to them)" leading Susie to think that John Popper really was dead.

  2. Nice! Yes I remember 2 or 3 other small groups of fans at the bus. The first few years I was going to shows I was "too cool" to ask for photos/autographs, to my regret, so I only have memories from that night. Now I don't mind asking at all - you never know when you'll get that chance again. What's crazy is that was 20 years ago this summer. Sheesh. Half my life ago, almost.

  3. It was billed as the American Folk Music Tour, or something like that. The show I attended in Danbury, CT was not "in the round" as Jeff seemed to indicate that tour was. There definitely were more people there to see NM than Wilco, I think she was a bigger name at the time. That show was the one time I met the band after a show, we bailed halfway into NM's set and found the guys outside their bus..

  4. I am listening to a 1995 show on Owl and Bear and there is a nice version of Reincarnation that has become the Tweedy Show ending credits song. I know it had been done with Golden Smog but hadn't heard a Wilco version yet.

Edit - dang looks like that link just goes to the full show archive and not directly to the song. Anyhow it is Track 21.

  5. Jeff said that Jackfruit Brisket is his new stage name. LOL. I guess Scot Summit has long since retired.

Thanks for recapping these! I tend to catch a little each night but not all. We are fortunate that they are doing these each night.

I'm sort of curious if they'll ever cover a song from the last 20 years.

Didn't they do a Billie Eilish song last week?

Locally (Hudson Valley NY), I really enjoyed The Warp The Weft - "Dead Reckoning"

I haven't picked up Mark Lanegan's new album yet. Usually he's near the top of my lists. The brief samples I've heard haven't really been my thing. I'll probably pick it up soonish though.

  9. Jeff solo tour winter 2001... At Irving Plaza Jeff mentioned that someone in the audience sent him a book that their publishing company put out about Bob Dylan, that claimed Dylan was the first musician to blow in and out of a harmonica. Jeff then said he was the first person to strum his guitar strings up and down, back when he was "inventing alternative country." That was also the tour where Jeff told the story every night how, as a kid, he and his friend would say things were "cock", so he changed the names of his songs to "____ cock." People started shouting out "Box Full of Cock" "What's the Cock Got In Store?", etc., until somebody with a good loud voice won the room with "Out of Cock, Out of Mind." Jeff then proceeded to play "Hesitating Cock." He also riffed on the Grateful Dead on that tour, for some reason, to the point that one night he sung a parody version of Ripple.

  10. Well, he also has a phobia of pronouncing "swords" (10/12/19) and he says AL-bany instead of Awl-bany and ROE-chester instead of Rah-chester (Solid Sound).

I guess people from the midwest just pronounce things differently!

    ;)

  11. You and I by Lucius would be nice.

There is a video of the Spring Standards covering I'm Always in Love; would be nice to hear a proper studio take by them.

Tom Petty doing You Never Know would have been perfect, especially as the music is so similar to Jammin' Me anyway.

Los Lobos - Secret of the Sea

Mark Knopfler - One Sunday Morning

Ben Kweller - Box Full of Letters

    Old 97s - Candyfloss

Soul Asylum - Student Loan Stereo

I'm trying to think what song would be perfect for Joseph Arthur...perhaps You Are My Face. Or maybe How Do You Fight Loneliness.

Good choices for Pearl Jam up there.

  12. Joe DiMaggio Done It Again - still can't believe they didn't try this one in Cooperstown 2012, at least.

Blasting Fonda - well, I guess I am not surprised they don't play it. But I've been waiting a long time to hear it.

Finally got my What Light at Solid Sound this summer.

Agree that Magnetized and You Satellite should be in regular rotation.

  13. That does sound like a fun show! I love it when they pull out a few covers, and the writer is spot on that Kraig is a hidden gem in the band. Many of my favorite GS songs are his.

Indeed.. probably because the other guys were using their leftovers in GS while Kraig's songs were his best. Still, that's pretty admirable given how awesome many of those "leftovers' are!

Dan has also recently become active on instagram. Here's to hoping for a few more one-off gigs at least.

  14. Allusions, or references?

"Allusion: an expression designed to call something to mind without mentioning it explicitly; an indirect or passing reference."

I guess we are going for references here.

    Pearl Jam - "Santa Cruz"

"I got Neil Young on the stereo
He comes along whenever I go"

    Elvis:

Richard Thompson - "From Galway to Graceland"
Mark Knopfler - "Back To Tupelo"

    Old 97s - "Ray Charles"

Rhett Miller - "Christie's Got a Guitar" - references Marc Bolan

The Who - "You Better You Bet"

"I got your body right now on my mind and I drunk myself blind
To the sound of old T-Rex
To the sound of old T-Rex, who's next?"

Possible allusion! "Gullible's Travels" by Soul Asylum may or may not be an allusion to Soundgarden, who were getting more attention from their label A&M:
"Woke up, was cold and his manager had sold him
It's louder than love but don't think they know what it means"

  15. I'm pretty sure we have several threads on this topic already. Would be great if they could be stickied.

I'm going to reiterate August 12, 2000, which I think was also a free Chicago show and great quality (FM?) sound.

September 19, 2000 - Irving Plaza. Back in the days of tape trading this one took up three sides, might've even had a song or two on side four. Started with 40 or 45 minutes or so of Woody Guthrie songs. Outtasite with the Won't Get Fooled Again intro. A couple YHF previews. Ended with the Lonely 1. Any show that ended with The Lonely 1 was epic.

Radio City 2005 was nice. Be Not So Fearful was a highlight for me.

Can't go wrong with any of the spring 2010 "Evening With Wilco" shows.

Capitol Theater 2014 was peak live Wilco for me. And Ashes of American Flags was the peak of all three nights, if that is possible to pinpoint a song or moment from that run. Yes all three nights were roadcased but there are some nice audience tapes out there too.

For Jeff solo my favorite show/bootleg was my first, Irving Plaza February 2001. That tour had such a rich deep sound (as heard on the IATTBYH movie).

    Happy Listening!

  16. How would the attendees say this year stacked up against others? I went 2013, 2015 and 2017, with 2013 being the best (covers show, first time, etc.).

I'm kinda forgetting which year was which at this point. I think I had the most fun/best vibe in 2015, but as far as performances go... I would say, and with this weekend still fresh in my mind... 2013 both nights, the 2017 album show, especially Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, and the 2019 Karaoke night are the most memorable Wilco performances. As far as Jeff shows go, I think I liked 2010 the best. (I missed all of 2011 and this year's Sunday show, for the record). 2013 was good because it also introduced me to Lucius who I have now seen many times since. 2013 also had Neko Case and David Hidalgo, so that may have been my favorite festival lineup.

Short answer - each year has been great in its own way.
