  1. I was at both 9:30 shows (as well Merriweather, Wolf Trap, Baltimore Opera, Durham, Delaware...)

If TM owns stubhub, isn't that illegal? My husband seems to think they had a problem with racketeering a few years ago.

I dunno. I always thought stubhub all on its own, regardless of who owns it, is illegal. but that's just me.

  2. What are you talking about? I don't get the sarcasm.

I'm new to living in DC and go to a couple shows a week. Some audiences are great, some are good, and rarely they are terrible. The Wilco audience at the Wolf Trap fell into the latter category. People sat the entire show. People chatted like they were a baseball game. It's a concert- stand up, shut up, and have some fun.

All I was saying was that it's sort of counter-intuitive that a show that sells out right away (which would imply an energized, excited fanbase) would have a so-so audience. Yet that happenned at the Wolf Trap. I'm hoping that it doesn't here.

I don't think my post was difficult to understand. Did you disagree with it or misread it? Or is there just a board rule that we all have to be blindly optimistic? I'm really excited for the show, but I just hope that the people who would prefer to have a dinner party just have one instead of hosting it at a rock show.

I've been living in DC for about 10 years now and find the crowds at shows here to be fairly great. you gotta remember that Wolf Trap is pretty much a venue to host a dinner party at a rock show. I dunno, I am surprised that the show is 2 months away and people are already hating on the crowd. maybe go to the show, enjoy it, and then decide if the crowd is lame or not.

  3. It's an unrealistically small venue for Wilco at this point, unless it's a surprise show (think Radiohead at 9:30 after Tibetan Freedom Festival). I'd really like to know if TM has a relationship to other outlets, which always get tickets. Just saw them on stubhub for $118-600. We failed at presale (kept getting bumped out), then between two people using four computers for over an hour this morning.

I believe I'll be watching Ashes that night...

Wilco usually plays the 9:30club when they are on the east coast, although small venues might be unrealistic... they do make for phenomenal shows. and i am pretty sure ticketmaster owns stubhub.

  4. I think everyone should keep in mind that the Strathmore seats less than 2,000, DC has a population of 600,000 not counting the 2 hour span of suburbs in all directions, and the venue has season ticket holders. it is very similar to when the band plays the 9:30club. unfortunately at such small venues, it is extremely difficult to get hands on tickets. myself and a friend both tried for tickets and got shut out, we expected it though. i have also never paid more than face value for a wilco ticket, have always bought my wilco tickets, have been shut out of ticket sales, and have never missed a local show.

  5. No email from Wilcoweb re: the Atlanta show, so I get on the website for the presale - something's wrong with my login and I have to resubscribe. I'm to receive an email featuring my new password - which takes over an hour to arrive.

I go back to login, presale sold out. This morning there's another one from Dave FM in Atlanta - I log in within an hour after it goes live and - nothing.

What a bummer. Am planning to drive down from Nashville for the show - who'd have thought getting tickets would be a bit of a hassle for a person with a 10-year sub to Wilcoweb?

I know, it's my own fault - should have tested my login ahead of time - but sheez. Drag.

ummm, isn't there still the regular on sale this Saturday via ticketmaster? pre-sale is usually only 10% of the venue. (there's all sorts of chatter about such things in the Just a Fan section)

  6. I'm getting the message now for Bethesda that there's nothing available.

I'm not surprised, the Strathmore is TINY. I saw Glenn do a solo show there and am pretty amazed there is going to be a full Wilco show. The main ticket sale day will sell out just as quickly.

  7. me and the guys saw it this weekend. everyone enjoyed it. we also saw Sherlock Holmes. they thought avatar was better, i preferred Holmes. all in all a good movie, visually stunning, and 30 minutes in, i really did forget those creatures weren't real. my butt and legs did go numb for sitting in a cramped movie theater seat for so long.

  8. The only thing I know is it is the BEST game ever! I played it all the time in college. Sadly I don't have it now or others that would play. In all seriousness, I think it is a really great game and pretty much any game from the company that makes Settlers has never disappointed. I have played 3 other games by that company and have enjoyed them all. Settlers is my favorite though. There is strategy, the board changes, there is plenty of interaction with other players, opportunity for rivalry and alliances, and can be a lot of fun.

  9. huh. I just got this email from the 9:30club:

    Concert Fans Beware!

There’s a train wreck about to happen and consumer groups say YOU will be the victim if the two most powerful corporate interests in the live concert business get their way. But you can help stop the merger of Ticketmaster and Live Nation. The government needs to hear from music fans now. Tell the Department of Justice that you’re against these monopolies amassing illegal power over consumers, before it’s too late. antitrust.complaints@usdoj.gov

As a concertgoer you have already felt the pain, and if Ticketmaster and Live Nation get their way, it’ll get worse. In the last 12 years, since Live Nation and its predecessor started its widespread takeover of the concert industry, concert ticket prices have shot up 82% while the consumer price index has gone up just 17%*. We are concerned that if the two concert industry behemoths, Live Nation and Ticketmaster, are permitted to merge, the variety and quality of artists coming to local venues will be affected, and your costs could rise further and faster.

Five of the nation’s most prominent public interest groups called on the Department of Justice to block the proposed merger of Ticketmaster and Live Nation:

“Consumers deserve a fair deal in the entertainment marketplace, not the fewer choices and higher prices that would result from this merger,” said Susan Grant, Director of Consumer Protection at Consumer Federation of America

“This merger is an insult to both musicians and consumers,” said James Love, Director of Knowledge Ecology International

“We cannot envision a remedy that would ease this chilling impediment to competition… In the absence of other effective, expeditious remedies, the proposed transaction should be prohibited.” American Antitrust Institute White Paper

As described by Senator Herb Kohl (WI) in the House Antitrust hearing, “This merger will not only expand Ticketmaster’s control of the ticketing market by eliminating a competitor, but it is also creating an entity that will control the entire chain of the concert business – from artist management to concert promotion and production to ticketing and ticket resale.”

“This merger would be a disaster for consumers. Nothing short of blocking this takeover of the ticket market by two industry behemoths will be acceptable,” said National Consumers League Executive Director Sally Greenberg

“As president, I will direct my administration to reinvigorate antitrust enforcement. I will step up review of merger activity and take effective action to stop or restructure those mergers that are likely to harm consumer welfare…,” said Senator Barack Obama when he was campaigning for the presidency.

If you agree with the consumer groups and lawmakers, make a difference and LET YOUR VOICE BE HEARD NOW.

Send a message to the Antitrust Division of the Department of Justice telling them you support President Obama’s campaign promise to protect the American public from abusive monopolies.

  10. Again, I don't think it is about how much money they are going to make. I have read nothing like that. I don't know enough about Slayer to know their status, but I doubt they are going hungry. And Anthrax, although not as big as they use to be, are still recording and touring. Granted, it will probably be a big payday for them. I think it is about the camaraderie, and the music.

I dunno, why would Def Leppard sign a deal to develop a cartoon about Def Leppard? I think there are enough stories of famous people being completely broke (didn't Aretha Franklin almost declare bankruptcy) that these reunion tours just scream "we need money" to me and have nothing to do with the music. I am such a cynic though, to me if it was about the music, they would have continued to develop and create their music, tour, etc even when it wasn't the popular thing to do.

  11. I really don't get all the Bernanke hate.

He was a key player in all the maneuvering in the bank system that made the sub-prime mortgage experiment possible, was part of the brain trust that put the banking system where it was when it imploded and then claimed he should be the one to fix it because he was such an insider. i dunno, i've been working on a pay cut for over 2 years now and lost all of my retirement benefits, have watched others lose their jobs, and others be at risk with their houses. I think the Bernanke hate is similar to any fat cats on wall street/big bank ceo hate that is out there. he helped get us into this mess and is somehow still employed.

  12. Bernie Sanders, God bless him, was giving Bernanke a hard time, but I am pretty sure Bernanke will be re-upped. And yes, he is more powerful than the president.

Bernie Sanders is going to "place a hold on the nomination, a procedural move that means Bernanke will need 60 votes to be confirmed." and according to the Washington Post "The timing will be tight. The Senate returns to session Jan. 19, and if Bernanke is not confirmed by Jan. 31, then Fed Vice Chairman Donald Kohn would take over as acting chairman, though Bernanke could remain on the Fed board of governors pending confirmation."

  13. not sure if they've straightened out their differences, but they probably wouldn't mingle before or after the shows anyway... i'd bet the main reason they're doing it is they're all probably getting a pretty hefty paycheck for these shows...

i'd bet the main reason they're doing this is that they need paychecks period. not necessarily hefty ones.
