  3. When I bought my MINI it was a no-pressure experience, but the salesman was definitely on commission. The catch is they pretty much have to special order the car / have a waiting list because they only manufacture so many a year, so that means everyone pays the same price or doesn't get a car. at least at the dealership I went to. I watched a guy try to finagle money off his purchase price and over and over again the salesman told him the price is what it is. also NEVER try to purchase a MINI in July or August. You won't be able to. They close the factory for the month of August and don't take orders then because they get backlogged from the European holiday.

The customer that my sales guy was helping before me was incredibly rude to me as I was waiting on the sales guy. He felt really really bad for it and bought me lunch, didn't charge me for my floor mats, and put a stipulation on my account that I get free car washes from their dealership anytime I want (they normally charge $50 a pop outside of the carwash you get with your yearly maintenance). Of course, it is an hour and fifteen minute drive to the dealership, so I haven't really taken advantage of that part of the bargain.

  4. I know there's at least someone around here that's from Memphis. Looking for some help planning a weekend jaunt down with the lady.

We're going because we want to see Graceland. But aside from that, we have no idea where to go/stay/eat. What area should I look for a hotel in? What bars and restaurants should we hit? Any other attractions we should be checking out? Sun Studios? Should I check out one of the BBQ joints Guy Fieri hit up on his show? Is BBQ the way to go in Memphis? Is there a great blues bar to check out? Is Beale Street a good idea or no? I've heard conflicting things.

I think we're just going to be there on a Saturday afternoon/night, then Sunday we're checking out Graceland and then heading to Tunica, MS to do a little gambling.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Be warned...a lot of places are closed on Sundays AND Mondays.

  5. there are two things i don't like about my iphone:

the M key is too close to the backspace key

it is on the AT&T network.

beyond that I love it. I traded an LG Dare in for it (and chose the LG Dare over the Blackberry Storm because the storm seemed very clunky, the touch screen to be awkward, and the interface made no sense to me. I have no regrets about making the switch from verizon and the LG Dare to the iPhone. the iPhone makes up in leaps and bounds for the lacking in the network.

most women soccer players have better legs than that.

i'm not sure if it was because of a choppy stream or the clips were shown in slow motion, but a lot of stuff gets missed by refs because it happens so quickly and the position of the center ref is usually not very close to defenders. and for some very stupid lame reason refs don't issue red cards to women the way they do to men. stuff that happens away from the ball and play always seems to get missed because the linesman and ref are focused on other things going on. of course it is all still very inexcusable. but it happens and probably a lot more than we or the news media realizes.

i had a girl slide tackle me in a game, very similar to one of those dirty plays and it caused my calf muscle to rupture. and that was a division 3 rec game. two weeks prior to that she broke a girls leg in a similar manner. girls can play just as rough and dirty...sometimes even rougher than guys. we're all just surprised because it is girls doing it. you'll see similar stunts with guys, just maybe not as much hair pulling because guys don't have as many ponytails on the field. :P

  7. I’ll third or fourth everyone on The Confederacy of Dunces.

me too on this one. i made it through the whole book, based on a recommendation of someone saying it was their favorite. yeah, NO. i was not a fan and did not find the humor in it either.

  8. This is one of the worst books I've ever read:

    51EQAHFVD6L._SL500_AA240_.jpg

The story is fairly compelling, but the writing is horrid. Not only is Brown an awful writer, but his editor is obviously an idiot.

I am SO glad this made it in at the top of the thread. I made it to page 20 of this and HAD to put it down because the writing was so horrid.

  9. someone stopped me today and asked what my plates meant. when i told the girls, they cheered with glee and giddiness. i don't think they actually knew the reference, but were instead just happy to have deciphered the plates.

  10. Wasn't the quote something along the lines of "read a book by a guy who actually walked somewhere?"

yes. i was trying to be nice and not rain on the parade of the Bill Bryson fans. :P i recall a follow-up conversation that went something like this:

"oh, look at the light. wow, there's just something about it in this place. it's beautiful."

"[mocking] oh the light...you're not the first one to notice that...you really should read that book..."

    ;)

  11. Another one I love! But I didn't see it as a random subject, I'm specifically a fan of the social history of diseases. :lol God, I'm a complete freak, aren't I?

That story is a classic in the history of public health interventions. There's a very active public health policy blog called "The Pump Handle". :yes

We're both complete freaks then! I've read several books on the history of diseases, rats, and lots of other stuff (I call it random because when you go in a book store, you have to track these books down, there really should be a section titled "random history" to make it easier. :P)

the map that was drawn and helped detect the source of the outbreak is often used as an example of good information design in design schools and classes.

  12.

Are both on their way. I'm also always kind of reading or re-reading.

I know the artist that made the artwork featured on the cover of that book. I designed a book of his work and own a couple of pieces of his art. amazing guy. He is schizophrenic and has severe OCD, but overcame his demons and has made quite the successful inspiring life for himself. He is a fascinating person.
