I agree, the new stuff off his last three albums have been the best of his career. I think that he has made his own music now rather than ripping the Beatles.
I think I agree with you. It's hard to get through Gay Parade all the way. I'm now listening to Coquelicot Asleep and it's already better than Gay Parade in my opinion. But I think I'll enjoy the following stuff better again (Satanic Panic, Sunlandic Twins and the new one).

How does this compare to Endtime?
Endtime is the only one I possess and I love it. I don't think I could ever tire of "Good For Nothing."
Endtime is my fave I think, but Old Paint and Springtime are really good too. On Endtime my fave song is "Raised Skin".

I'm listening to a few previous Of Montreal stuff prior to go on with the new one...

Really nice record.
Isn't it?
Catherine Irwin's voice is so poignant, especially on the opener, "Gravity"
To me, Freakwater always did Appalachian country at its best.

The Laura Cantrell version is lovely.

"rock singer" is the most insane concept, unless you mention Lou Reed, Iggy Stooge, Jeffrey Lee Pierce, Janis Joplin and Slim Cessna.

One of the most amazingly talented and intelligent bands ever

Well, I would say that the self-titled Lucinda Williams album is certainly the best collection of songs of the eighties.

How about a poll? Just to get an instant sight at which is the fans most favorite?

It's the best album of the 80's to me. I agree with the Pitchfork reviewer (and God knows I don't like Pitchfork in general), it's an absolute masterpiece.
The melodies are simple and catchy, and set on fire by one of the most powerful and pure voices ever recorded in rock music.
