  1. Sandy, my apologies. I try to type and respond quickly and I end up being an ass, so i'm sorry you are correct as well, the show I was talking about with Calexico was in November of 2004. They played Flagstaff in April 2005 right around the time of the Coachella gig. Anyway I didn't mean to offend and I understand I was coming across dickish and I apologize, since you work at the Mesa arts does that mean you will be at the Sunvolt/Cowboy Junies show there in a few weeks or so? I'm still considering that one and haven't made up my mind. The crowd in Tempe at the Marquee is usually decent and that show in 2004 was awesome and had people dancing, Jeff was in a great mood announcing his sobriety and his sister was in attendance, I even met a few people from this message board before the show and had some drinks, a married couple from Texas and a taper. Hell, the crowd at the Rialto in Tucson is usually awesome, I blame the venue mostly and the snobs that wanted to set secondary. Hopefully the band didn't decide with this show that coming to AZ every 4 years is too much since most were unappreciative and didn't know how or want to rock.

  2. Just to join in on the stickling, the name of the song is spiders, not kidsmoke.

So, I just got off the phone with another friend at the show who informed me as he was in the lobby about 3 songs before the end to use the bathroom, he overheard security/usher types bragging of how they got people to sit down who were standing. He questioned them as to why they would do that at a rock show to which they replied 'because it's a seated venue'. My friend told them that was ridiculous and the punk kid employee said "you don't have to come to shows here". He walked away stunned.

I certainly won't be returning to Centennial hall though I may make a futile phone call. The band hasn't played in Tucson in 14 years so skipping a show based on a venue choice isn't an easy thing to do. I haven't heard any other stories of security asking people to sit so hopefully most folks weren't affected but between fans asking other fans to sit and security doing the same it's not wonder the crowd was a dud. I heard lots of pretentious chatter as well. People complaining about Grizzly Bear calling them a rip off and saying their songs were incomplete thoughts. I heard the typical annoying wilco fans literally whining after the show about how the set list was awful and the worst they had heard. I felt like I was in the twilight zone, it all sounded really fucking great and I enjoyed it all. Hopefully next time they do Phoenix or Flagstaff. The best Wilco show I ever saw was in Tempe with Calexico opening back in 2005. (not sure where the guy got his facts about 04 being the last time they played the phoenix area, maybe cuz it was in Tempe?). That show was incredible, right behind it would be night 1 of the Winter Residency. anyway, I was prepared for a crappy crowd but they went beyond what I expected.

  3. I think there were a lot more people standing than people realized. It's just that when people are sitting it gets magnified more than everyone else who is standing.

I'm not sure where you were but the entire pit sat the whole show until the encores. I was 4th row and I kept looking back and there is no way even 10% of the crowd was standing during the show. Once they played I'm the Man Who Loves you through the end people stood but the entire first half of the show there could not have been more than 50 people sprinkled throughout the crowd standing. It was driving me nuts so much so i'm still ranting about it *lol*

  4. And it was Poor > Rev > Spiders.

And the show was on the 18th, not 19th. :P

[i'm sure you just as tired as me]

I had it typed as Poor>Reservations>Spiders so i'm not sure what you mean *lol* you are right about the date though, I live in Phoenix so it was a little drive for me as well so it was late. :)

Edit, I have the correct date in the title?!

  5. The crowd was into Kingpin but it was like they were off on the scream part a bit. Jeff did the "how can I" and people screamed as he was saying the "I" or something. I dunno, the crowd was simply off. I was so happy to be hearing reservations though.

I did see the exchange with the guy in the pit but I wasn't aware he was on his cell phone. People are terrible. I almost always go to shows in Tucson because the crowd is better. Had that show been at The Rialto it would have been better. I have to believe the no beer and seated theater combo killed any chance of a vibe. I've seen these guys in an all seated venue (auditorium theater chicago) and people stood but I couldn't believe how many zombies there were just sitting, staring and not even bobbing their heads or singing along.

I wish I could go to Vegas tonight. Oh well. This won't happen at Red Rocks. Loved the music, the bands energy and Grizzly Bear sounded perfect despite the crowd mostly not having a arrived yet. Passenger Side would have been nice as well but we got some great songs and the sound was so fucking good at this place. Anyone else get the idea that Jeff wanted to be "come on people get off your asses" ?

Also, I don't think there needs to be someone in your way to avoid in order to stand. I simply wanted to umm ROCK lol. I was 4th row and there wasn't a soul in my way but sitting at a rock show is ridiculous and then to be tapped on the shoulder and asked to sit back down was a total "WTF did you just ask me" moment. Of course we could all see if we are all sitting but what kind of energy does that show the band? There was nothing for them to feed off of. Lame. I'm glad they still rocked though.

  6. Coming into tonight's gig I had some concerns about the venue. It's seated and you can't bring beer in. I'm not much of a drinker at shows myself but it sounds like a bit of a vibe killer. As far as seated goes, people actually sat at a rock concert. Like, all of Grizzly Bear and all of Wilco until the encore. I should start by saying both bands put on a beautiful show. I actually found myself enjoying Wilco's set more tonight than I did at Bonnaroo. The problem is the rest of the crowd didn't feel that way or thought they were at the symphony. I finally had to stand because I couldn't contain myself during a song like "Shot in the Arm". I mean, how do you sit through that? Well, lucky for me most of the crowd also decided to finally stand. Finally I feel great and i'm enjoying myself immensely. This is already the 10th song into the set for christs sake. As soon as it's over and "side with seeds" starts, everyone sits again. I stood and I would say there were maybe 20 other people in the audience who did the same thing. I got tapped on the shoulder by the folks behind me who proceeded to tell me I was in their way and I needed to sit. "at a rock show?, really?".....they argue some more and I tell them how much that sucks and how they should stand too... I decide i'm gonna have to sit or else get heckled the whole show by these people. I watched the rest of the show rocking out in my seat. I felt ridiculous. I looked around throughout the show and it looked like no one knew what concert they were at. This was a sold out show in Tucson a place where they haven't played in "14" years as Tweedy kept reminding us as if to say what the fuck is wrong with you people, show me some energy or excitement. I saw sections of the crowd here and there into it and small groups standing for a few songs at a time but that was about it until the encores. I thought they sounded so good too. Nels really tore it up and Jeffs voice sounded great. Nels had many great solo's and that guy can't sit still. Even while playing the lap steel guitar he's contorting his legs. He's easily the most intense guitar player I have seen live. They only played 3 new songs tonight so it's not like the band bored the crowd pushing the new stuff either.

  7. I've seen the band once, and if they play the same setlist I saw again in July, I'll be disappointed. The show will be great, because the band is always on their A game, but everyone goes to a concert hoping to see something rare-ish.

Sure and maybe you just need to be more specific. I'm literal and I don't post much so i'll take some of the blame. We both know you will get a different set list in July. How different is the real question. hell, I am wondering how different the set list tomorrow night will be in Tucson. I'm thinking very different because it's not a festival but who knows. I just hope the band is on. I've been looking forward to this show for a while and it's their first show in Tucson in like a decade I think. Like literally. It's also their first show in Arizona since 2006 so i've had to travel to see this band over the past few years and I do it gladly but that Auditorium Theater show I attended was indeed a disapointment for me. Night one of the Winter Residency was amazing though. I have heard all 5 of those shows, i wonder which one is the most popular. I can't stop listening to the bootleg of night one and I wonder if it's just because that was the night I was there. It was an awesome set list. I was so happy to hear Candy Floss live finally! I'm not rich and I make less than 30K a year but i'm passionate about music so I travel for it when i can.

I do agree that people who tour with the band really shouldn't complain. The band knows that 95% of their fanbase will not go to multiple shows on a tour, so they'll try to put the "classics" in as many shows as possible, while still throwing out the occasional rarity.

Yep, I would love to be in a band and make a setlist every night. We are really lucky with Wilco though in the regard that they know how to play their entire catalog and there is no other band with the extensive catalog they have who is that versatile. That + nels clyne has made this band a force to be reckoned with as if they weren't a big enough force following the release of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. It's been fun watching them reach new levels.

  8. You have to remember that most people on this board have seen Wilco many times over the years, and have therefore seen all the "greatest hits" many times, thus diminishing their appeal. If they play that kind of setlist when I see them in July, I'll enjoy the show, but criticize the setlists for not bringing anything rare, or new.

You set yourself up for disapointment. Crticizing a band you love for not playing exactly what you want to hear every single time is ridiculous. I realize and do not forget that most of us have seen them mulitple times. The average die hard fan probably only gets to see them a few times a year. I understand that there are die hards that have seen them hundreds of times but it's ridiculous to wait for some ultra rare or custom set list. They flat out rock live and are one of the most versatile bands with their setlists so if people aren't happy, they are being ultra picky. This band plays 2+ hours every show with a different set list just about every night. If you want ultra rare wait for the next Winter Residency but it simply sounds pretentious to groan about a greatest hits set list.

The joy of Wilco's constant touring is that they switch the setlists up so much, so if I was at a show and saw all songs I had seen before, I'd be a bit upset too.

But if you go to tons and tons of shows then obviously chances are really high you will have seen them perform all the songs before. How can that upset you? You chose to go to muliple shows and as you said they switch up the set list quite a bit but once you have seen them all, if you don't want to see them again or it's going to pain people they shouldn't see the band for a while. It's time to take a break and breath for a bit. Maybe take a year off. I have travelled to see the band but i've probably seen them less than 20 times. I'm happy every chance I get. Do I get dispaointed with shows? Sure. I thought the October 30th Auditorium Theater show I flew to Chicago for back in 2006 ( I think ) was flat. The fact that it was in a theater with seats kinda sucked and the band didn't really blow me away that night. Just three months earlier I saw the best Wilco show of my life with Calexico opening in Tempe, AZ. It was an amazing show, the band was on fire. It was full of songs from AGIB and YHF and the energy was unreal that night. It wasn't anything rare at all. I can also understand people having a favorite song they wanted to hear and maybe saying 'damn, I didn't get via chicago last night'. That makes sense to me but to criticize a set list for lack of rarities is silly since they are in fact "rarities".

I just think those who complain about a greatest hits setlist probably need to take a break from the shows for a bit since they are burnt out. Maybe wait for another residency or some woody guthrie tribute show or possibly start campaigning for an Uncle Tupelo one off gig at some festival or something. :)

All that said, I can't wait to see them tomorrow night and with Grizzly Bear opening it's going to be fun next up will be Red Rocks, I can't wait to see my favorite band play a beautiful venue I have never been too with another killer opener in Okkervil River.

  9. How awesome is it that people are complaining about a greatest hits show? I think there is something wrong with you those of you who have that criticism.

Personally, i'm glad my favorite band in the world didn't try to shove the entire new album down my throat and try to sell it to me from the stage constantly. What an awesome set that was and I was so happy to be front and near the center on the rail for it!

I can't wait for Thursday to see them in Tucson with Grizzly Bear. This is going to be magic! Then off to Red Rocks in a couple of weeks. .........

wah wah they played a greatest hits set list. Srsly?! wtf?

  10. Wilco doing Wilco. yeah, i don't disagree. It's not necessarily a good thing though. This band has gone in a new direction with every album and I feel as though they have failed to do that here. Maybe it's because they've had this lineup for a while now, or because they're all getting old and complacent, I don't know, but it's rough.

I understand this board is full of fanboys who will love everything this band does until the end of time (or wilco, whichever comes first). But man, I love wilco more than anyone I personally know and this is a sad night.

I did not like Sky Blue Sky and never embraced the album tracks but live they came to life. I like this album instantly. Nels shreds, the duet with feist is fucking beautiful and this is an absolute evolution of the band.

  11. I think I hate all seats venues more than I hate no alcohol in the seating area venues. I think seats at a rock concert seriously fucks with the vibe in a bad way. I liked to stand and rock out and hate being constricted by seats.

  12. Has anyone been to Centennial Hall before for a show? I've heard it's small, but have no clue.

Holds around 2,500 seats. All seats no standing. No alcohol in the seating area. I'm not pleased with the venue choice. They haven't played Tucson in a decade they should be at the Rialto and it would have sold out fairly fast but us die hards would have had tickets to a show at probably the best venue in the state.

  13. I got row 36 booo. I had no idea about the GA i just assumed it was lawn seating or something. Another tip is there is another presale through the radio station tomorrow so maybe they will have different or closer seats. Not sure which station but i'm sure someone here will have details and a password.

I can't wait for this show.

  14. What time does the presale start for Red Rocks? Is it 10am pacific? I can't seem to locate the specific time.

edit...found it, sorry to waste the space.

On Sale Wednesday April 22nd at 10am MT (11am CT)

    * JUL-3 Red Rocks, Morrison, CO

    I think that's 9:00am in Arizona.

  15. Alright guys, I just got back from Coachella and the day before I went I decided to switch up travel plans and go to this Red Rocks show. I'm fairly convinced that The Gorge in Washington is the most beautiful venue in the country and Red Rocks is probably second. I have never been but seeing my favorite band in this beautiful venue seems to perfect to pass up. Especially since the venue they chose in Tucson really sucks. No beer and all seats. wtf?! Anyway I am in and I am there! I can't wait!

I will also be seeing them at Bonnaroo so 3 times this year. Woo hoo!

  16. I tweeted the whole thing. lol http://twitter.com/CAndersonOKC
