  1. A little while back (Summer '05 I believe), I was at a birthday party for a good college friend of mine in NYC. He and I share a strong appreciation of music. We had a radio show we did together in college and in the 13 years (yikes!) we've been out of school we do a disc swap every Spring and Fall to stay current with what each of us is listening to. Anyway, I'm at this party and his younger brother (who is also fairly into music) comes over to me and starts talking about different bands. The subject comes to Wilco and he fires the priceless comment to me that "people who say they like Wilco and Radiohead do so to make it seem like they know more about music than others." Considering that I had just told him that Wilco was one of my favorite bands, I thought this was an interesting comment on a number of levels. Definitely a random thought/posting, but I figured this would be a good place to share it.

  2. My favorite LP's mentioned are Nashville Skyline, Meddle and Animals.

I guess it is debateable if these are 'underrated'. Sure, classic rock radio has never played a track from them, but I imagine most music fans with a decent amount of taster will have heard - and appreciated them.

I mentioned Animals because it seems to get buried under DSOTM, WYWH, and TW. But you are correct, it's not like it's some obscure record.

  3. Its simple really....Whiskeytown is a band, Ryan Adams is an individual. Ryan has some baggage, Whiskeytown was just trying to make music.

Succinct and true. Throw in some well placed fiddle and Caitlin Cary and you may be on to something. Another similar debate could be why is Faces so fucking awesome and post-Faces Rod Stewart is so horrible?

  4. i like shelby and allison. going to see allison w/ steve march 9th. can't wait.

Love the new Steve album WSS. It's clear that his marriage to Allison has put him in a happier place. And her contribution to the record is very nice. I think he took the anger thing a few albums too far. It began to consume the music.

  5. After having a bit of time to digest this disc I have to say I love it. It ranks up with their best. SRO stands alone at the top of the heap for me, but Decoration Day, Dirty South and this one are all pretty equal in my eyes. The only thing that would put those above this one for me would be that I like Isbell's songs better than Shonna. However Cooley's songs resonate strongest with me and this album Is chock full of them.

I think your view of BTCD is dead on. DD, SRO, and TDS are the cream of the crop in the DBT catalog. BTCD is right there with TDS and could possibly supplant it with a few more listens. I hate to say this, but I think the Shonna songs are somewhat of a novelty act. I'm not saying she is a bad singer or songwriter. I just don't think she's in the same league as Patterson, Cooley, or Jason. The album would have been better served without her 3 songs and "You and Your Crystal Meth."
