  1. I feel like you have to throw out the headliners in events like this unless you want to spend all day in a good spot at the main stage. I usually skip the headliners at the ACL Fest for example and bounce between smaller stages to catch undercard acts I enjoy. So that said, I wouldn't bother with Phish, Beastie Boys, David Byrne, Wilco, Al Green. All who I would normally like to see.

That said, the undercard still looks pretty good!

I think I'd enjoy all of these:

    TV on the Radio

    Andrew Bird

    Merle Haggard

    MGMT

    The Decemberists

    Bon Iver

    B

  2. This is WAY harder than it seems. Each peice of legislation and the connected appropriation is part of a complex system of lobbying, setting up programs different interest groups want and governmental inertia. As a member of the fine governmental bureaucracy everyone hates, I can tell you this is way easier said than done to dump a program and save money. What would anyone like to do without?? the Military, the social security system, welfare, roads, education, pork for your local district, your favorite charity, your church, your city, your mother, your disabled friend or family member, etc.

    Not so simple.

of course, we all know that one person's wasteful spending is another's essential program, so i see that as unlikely unfortunately)

    ;)

  3. Why don't people just pay their fucking taxes? It's really not that hard.

Just filed mine this morning! I hope that Obama can really do his line-by-line analysis and get rid of programs that don't work (of course, we all know that one person's wasteful spending is another's essential program, so i see that as unlikely unfortunately), but I have no problem paying taxes for the infrastructure we enjoy in the U.S.

  4. Ok the more reviews I read it is either "this is a masterpiece" or "this is convoluted crap", and personally, I don't know if anyone else can agree I really think this album is just pure genius. It is so intricate and every time I listen to it I am just amazed out how it all fits together, just plain plain awesome and easily my favorite record this year, by a lot actually.

Yeah I agree. I still like Eggs better, but I'm glad this one was step back towards more intricate compositions. I felt like AA, while certainly catchy, sacrificed a lot of the dynamics and harmonic mechanisms I so love Bird for.

  5. My view on this was that the refs were better at what they were doing than either team was at what they were doing. I see it as two not so super teams playing inartfully throughout the game. The only call I strongly disagreed with was the late hit on Big Ben. Other than that no problems from my perspective, these two teams just did not execute very well. As to the last fumble/pass and letting the Cards take one more shot down field I could not disagree more. For Warner clearly was losing he ball before his arm started moving forward. Could they have called it differently? Yep, but Steeler’s fans would be pissed today for the refs not following the rules. The first touchdown attempt by big ben that was ruled down could have been called differently too. It’s not the refs position to make the end of the game more exciting or to give one team or the other one more chance or to level the playing field, their job is to call it fairly and they did.

Well I disagree with more than just the late hit on Ben. I think the Steelers player who was wailing on that dude on the ground should have been ejected. I also think that while the final play (I guess technically the second to last play) should have been more carefully reviewed. I would have no problem with them coming back that there was not indisputable video evidence to overturn it, but the ref should have gone under the hood. This is the decisive play of the SB and it was damn close. I don't care if they say it was looked at upstairs, they didn't give it enough of a review. Two days later and I STILL am not sure what the absolute correct call should be, having seen it dozens of times. Finally, Holmes' Lebron celebration should have been an automatic 15 yard unsportsmanlike penalty for use of a prop (the football). That field position change might have drastically affected the kickoff and the subsequent field position. And I have no problem with them ignoring such things, but they called that shit against thew Cards, so you gotta be consistent. Anyway, I was rooting for the Steelers, so ultimately it didn't bother me much, but it was a sloppy game by all participants and not near worthy of consideration for the greatest SB ever, IMO.

ETA: the Cards have nothing to complain about, however. They had multiple opportunities to win the game despite any officiating transgressions.

  6. I think there were some bad penalties, but I can't see myself complaining if they were making the right calls.

Again, not complaining about the calls, just saying it wasn't as great of a SB to me due to the volume of penalties and how they affected the flow of the game. But it is no big deal; it was a great game. I was just surprised that so many are ranking it right up there with last year's game.

  7. That was a direct result of the play on the field, though. I don't know how more direct that could be.

I guess I'm not explaining myself well, but when the big plays of the game (not just the safety) happen when the ref makes the call not during the action (and yes I know that the calls are a result of the action), it is anti-climactic. Sort of like watching a free throw contest decide a basketball game. I don't want to see big drives happen as result of multiple 15 yard personal fouls, I want to see multiple big plays. I am not blaming the officials for calling a bad game; I am saying it was less entertaining to me than it was to many people because it was a penalty -filled game.

  8. The safety was the right call. A center tackling a DT is holding,no matter if it's preseason or the Super Bowl or on the 40 or in the end zone.

I said the calls weren't wrong per se, just when you have crucial scores and things happen as a direct result of calls by the official and NOT the play on the field, it tends to be a bit anti-climactic to me. However, apparently I'm alone in that as everyone seems to be calling this one of the best SBs ever. I thought it was good and entertaining, just not among the best ever and my reasons are that too many of game changing moments came with the refs mic on.

  9. As for the officiating, I don't remember too many of the calls, especially early. But the ones in the second half and fourth quarter all seemed warranted. Anything specific you're referring to?

At least two of the three personal fouls against AZ on that one drive were questionable at best, IMO (it is fucking football after all , let them hit each other). And the Fitzgerald TD catch hit the ground (blame Tomlin for not challenging that though). Also, the safety and a myriad of other plays were decided not by plays on the field, but by calls by the refs. not necessarily wrong calls, but I have hard time agreeing with those that say it was a great game when so much of it -- before the final two minutes -- was decided by referee calls.

  10. That was a good, entertaining game and my horse won as I was rooting fort he Steelers, but did anyone else feel like that was "Ref Bowl"? That game felt like there was way too many plays decided by touchy feely late hits and the like. I'm not saying the Steelers didn't deserve to win, but the refs played way more of a part than I feel they should. It's fuckin' football, let them hit each other!

  11. I currently receive the digital Comcast channels without the box (Chicago area, channels 2.1, 5.1, 7.1, 9.1, 32.1, etc). I don't know if these are considered "HD", but they're just as good. The problem is you can't get any premium HD channels (ESPN, HBO, TNT, etc, etc, etc) without the box.

    Hope this helps.

Yeah that's kinda what i figured. But if I can get the digital versions of those channels, it should be pretty good for a small TV. So to be clear, you are saying you get digital version of the local networks, not the HD version, right? All networks will have a digital signal in a few weeks, but that doesn't mean they are all HD.
