  1. Has anyone noticed that at times, singer Win Butler sounds *almost exactly* like Jeff Tweedy? Close your eyes and put on "Deep Blue". When he sings the lyrics quoted below, he sounds nearly identical to Jeff Tweedy. The song as a whole isn't a Tweedy clone, but just portions. Perhaps it's because these lyrics are sung in a falsetto (or near) voice. Be that as it may, this album has really hooked me since first listen. I think my current favorite wavers between "We Used to Wait" and "Sprawl II" both of which were performed on SNL last week. I recorded it just for ScarJo, but was very pleased to see they were the musical guest. :)

    "I heard a song from the speaker of a passing car

    And prayed to a dying star

    The memory's fading..."

  2. Anyone else really disappointed in this season? For me, the plot is weak (the whole "on the run" thing has run it's course, now it's just old and annoying), I don't like who Nancy has become (even though she's still smokin hot), it's not funny anymore, and it's just overall.. dumb..

    Anyone else agree? Disagree?

    Yeah, as much as I hate throwing the phrase "jump the shark" around this show has most definitely done that.

  3. ETA: They were total gems. They left their TV/DVD on one day with the Lion King in the player, on menu. Did the same thing with Law & Order SVU once. In both instances, twenty seconds of the opening song, overandoverandover again. They were friends with the girls in the room next to me too, and would sing musicals well after 2am.

    There's not a jury in this country that would have convicted you if you'd have bludgeoned them both in their sleep. Oh wait, you're not in Canada are you?

  4. I love me some Criterions, been collecting them for years. I've tried to buy as many as I can, but there's just too many so I've filled the gaps getting them from the Library and downloading (I think I'm only missing 4 or 5.)

    Even Salò?

    I couldn't bear even owning such a film, let alone watching it. I can't understand the merit of such a motion picture, and why Criterion would waste resources (painstaking film restoration, etc.) in preserving it. Call me old-fashioned, but I prefer my banquets to be shit-free.

    There are huge gaps in what I have, and that's certainly one of them. The thought of trying to own a complete set of Criterion is daunting to say the least.

  5. The jackass who lived in the dorm room above me freshman year had DDR. My observations:

    * They definitely moved their feet a lot;

    * Despite my fervent prayers, the soft pads seemed to be very, very durable;

    * People who use DDR laugh quite a bit, and laugh quite loudly;

    * During my "If you can't beat them, join them," campaign, I thought DDR was very fun; and

    * DDR only operates between the hours of 12am and 4am.

    Prior to joining them, did you contemplate murdering the occupants of the upstairs dorm room?

    There's a good chance I would have gone medieval on their asses.

  6. B & N Link

    Well, I went to Barnes & Noble for the first time in 2 months. I was surprised and wished that I had more money on me when I read about their Criterion Collection 50% sale. :stunned

    Any film lover knows how expensive this series has been since they've been in circulation.

    Since most of these go for $39.99 at Barnes & Noble, the sale price on one of these is $19.99.

    I'm pretty sure that it runs through Saturday the 20th and is available online as well.

    :cheers

    It's funny that I bashed them for having the most expensive prices for DVDs and CDs just a year ago.

    They do these sales about twice a year now. I splurged last year, but will exercise restraint and pick up just a few that I really really want this time around.

  7. Happy Armistice Day!!!

    Here, here! My father's father was a vet of WWI. He was born in 1896. Not many folks even know what Armistice Day stood for, anymore. Be that as it may, 'tis a good thing to honor all the vets.

    I raise my glass in your general direction. Thank you!

  8. My single ticket for the Charlottesville show arrived today via US Mail, in a hand-addressed envelope which kinda threw me off. The person that addressed it didn't have the neatest handwriting in the world, you see. All is well, at any rate.

    I think that is the fastest I've ever rec'd a ticket in the mail for a show that is over a month away. Anyhoo... now for a shot of this:

  9. I figured I could probably get closer seats/cheaper shipping with the regular on-sale. But when I had them pop up in the pre-sale, I wasn't about to throw them back and risk getting nothing.

    I hear you. I would have done the same thing. "A bird in the hand...." as they say. I'm thankful tix for C-Ville wasn't such a cluster-f*ck like it seems Tarrytown was for many folks.

  10. Got my two for Charlottesville. Orchestra center. Row F. Initially it said none available, but I tried again and it worked. $8.50 for shipping is ridiculous, but whatever.

    Hey Shakespeare, looks like we'll be on the same Row. :) That was my first pull at 10:00 on the nose. Kept trying to see if I got better tickets, but no dice. My shipping (USPS) was only $2.50 for one ticket, though. :dontgetit

    Christmas is coming early this year! Hears hoping JT makes a swing through Durham or Raleigh. It could happen!

  11. I caught Jenny and Johnny on their stop in Carborro at the Cat's Cradle last week. It was on a whim-- I didn't have their album at that point, but I figured I couldn't go wrong with a Jenny Lewis project, right? It was loads of fun. They seemed to really enjoy themselves and although the set of originals were short, there were covers such as "Love Hurts" and one or two more whose names escape me now. The show concluded with an impromptu choir plucked from the crowd of people who claimed to *know* the song "Acid Tongue". They joined J+J onstage for the song and for a bunch of amateurs (the crowd singers, that is) it sounded good.

    I picked up their disc "I'm Having Fun Now" for a measly $10 and it's been riding in the car with me pretty much ever since. Such a fun pop record for late summer/early fall. I think I'm going to play it really loud right now.

    Cheers,

    Kevin

  12. I'm getting really excited about them rolling through Durham, NC! I've had the pleasure of seeing them open for REM and also at ACLF 2007, but this will be the first time seeing them perform a full set. It's been long overdue for me.

    Keep the reviews coming... It's a great way to put off working on a rainy Monday morning!
