  1. Edit: LOL. Yeah, maybe I didn't read the OP. You definitely don't want to be listening to these to help you sleep. I guess anything acoustic or quietly atmospheric would work.

Me neither. For the record, all of my submissions are not for falling asleep to... they're for listening and enjoyment at night.

The sunshine bores the daylights out of me,

Fans of Tom Waits can expect to see a whole lot more of him in the upcoming book Waits/Corbijn - Photographs 1977-2010. A joint effort with Dutch photographer/director Anton Corbijn, the book is set to be released in October 2010.

The book spans their 30-year relationship and features 200 iconic color and duotone portraits of Waits taken by Corbijn. While initially slated for an October 2009 release, it was pushed back a year, but for good reason. Publishers are adding a 49-page supplement of Waits' own images, writing, and lyrics from his songs. Editions will be available in English and German. Waits announced the upcoming release of the book on September 1 via Twitter.

A selection of Corbijn's photographs from the book will be on display at De Stadsschouwburg in Amsterdam from September 22 to October 12 during the staging of Shakespeare's Richard III, which incorporates music by Waits and his wife, American singer-songwriter Kathleen Brennan.

Waits recently played alongside Denzel Washington in the film The Book of Eli and is currently working on a new stage musical with director and long-time collaborator Robert Wilson and playwright Martin McDonagh. Corbijn, who has directed music videos for U2, Nirvana, and Coldplay, directed the film The American, starring George Clooney and released in the US this month and internationally throughout the fall.

For more information and to preorder a copy of the book (€75), visit the publisher's website: http://www.schirmer-mosel.com/corbijn/

  3. In conjunction with Hopscotch Music Festival (which will feature co-headliner Danny Perez (Panda Bear) of the Animal Collective) I saw that there will be a special screening of "Oddsac" at the Galaxy theatre in Cary, NC on Friday, Sept. 10, 3 p.m. It looks like a total mindf*ck of a movie, but hey, I'm game.

  4. I've been seeing all you Beautiful People on Facebook and thought that perhaps this was a "Top Secret" LRS, since I hadn't seen a thread here til just this morning. :) Looks like you all had a great time in the basement. A question for the hosts: how in the World did you happen to score the door off a Chicago police cruiser?

Is it really the last round for LRS? Say it ain't so...

  5. heard this song at the Whole Foods in Cary the other day. I think it was preceded by Son Volt. a few days later, they were playing Too Far Apart when I was making my rounds.

I spend more money when Wilco is playing over store speakers and I'm certain Whole Foods knows this, that's why they always pop-in the A.M. disc when I enter the store :music

Oh, they know. Someone I used to know called Whole Foods "Whole Paycheck."

Ask me about the name I have in my head for BB&T. (regional bank, for those unaware.)

  6. A friend of mine had Intellivision, and initially I liked it way better than the Atari 2600.

Those controllers were hell on my thumbs, however.

They were. Me and little brother had the Intellivision II console growing up. There was a voice module that came along later for certain games, such as B-17 bomber. It would say things like: "Bandits! 12 o'clock!" I loved that game.

  7. no joke, but i used an automated toilet yesterday. it was talking to me from the moment i stepped in!. telling me which button to close the door, also i have a 10 minute time limit, that i have to wash my hands in order for it to flush, telling me how to re-open the door and then saying "thanks for using our services".

gee, men go in there for some time alone!

and i wonder what will happen if you overstay the 10 min time limit?. will the door fly open and an inspector will slap a parking ticket on my arse?

Where was this crapper located in the world?

  8. The last time I really listened to Springsteen's "Long Time Coming" I thought of my best friend who is now the father of two. These lines choke me up when I think about his personal situation:

The sparks of the fire are left burning

Lie 2 kids in sleeping bags

I reach under your shirt and feel your belly

    There's another one kicking inside

I promise I ain't going to fuck it up this time

Not sure if that's the kind of sentiment you want to send in your mix... but part of parenthood is the waiting, esp. if this is to be a firstborn child. I can only imagine what it might feel like to carry a baby for 9 mos. but if I had to sum it up, it might feel like a "long time coming".

  9. The Smiths' "Cemetry Gates" (Keats and Yeats are on your side... while Wilde is on mine)

Buckner's "The Hill" is a great, great choice. It made me pick up a copy of the Spoon River Anthology. I'd only read a few of the poems in school.

  10. Three coming from Bethpage, New York (Long Island). I will be driving up with my new license plates! We're coming up on Saturday and are looking to jam on some Wilco tunes somewhere with other VC musicians.

Jerry-- Were you able to get all 6 signatures on your vanity plate? Will you actually be running said plate on your vehicle, or retiring the signed plate and getting a new one? Just curious. If I'd have gone through the trouble to sign it, I would have serious reservations about keeping it on the car. That's just me, though.

    Cheers!

    Kevin

  11. I know, I looked for you Sunday but didn't see ya. I caught a glimpse of ya Saturday way across the crowd during the On Fillmore set I think. Definitely, wish we had stayed closer so we could've hung out after the sets instead of drive 40 minutes. My liver is better for it, though.

I tried calling you on Sunday, waiting for JT's set. It went straight to voicemail. :ohwell

Yeah, I gave my liver a pretty good workout over the weekend. We were camping, so breakfast was a couple of ice-cold Summerfest (poured into a Dixie cup, of course.)

  12. Should we be worried that it didn't make a profit this year or does this happen to all major festivals during their inaugural year? I'm just hoping that fact doesn't prevent another...

I think it's too early to worry. I want to ride this high a little longer, anyway... esp. when the boots start coming along. Cheers!
