  1. I agree wholeheartedly, but are these not decisions we already make, as uncomfortable as they are? Current technology is such that we can preserve the lives of even the most severely brain-damaged. At some point, given today
  2. These are all good points. You are putting words in my mouth though El, I did not say those are not viable choices in most cases, I said it is not a viable choice for everyone. My aunt works as a nurse and counselor for an abortion provider in Boston, MA. She counsels patients on all aspects of their pregnancies, whether they choose to carry a baby to full term or not
  3. I think my issue with many pro-lifers is that they do not lend any credence to the idea of personhood. A fetus is undoubtedly human, as it will never reach full term as a Cockatoo
  4. Well, the majority of climatologists and others within the field have done, I think, a fine job of illustrating that we have passed the point of conjecture
  5. For you, but not for everyone. Because the topic of personal liberties and freedoms was raised, and Mr. Golyadkin bristled at the thought of the government imposing higher fuel efficiency standards
  6. The IPCC's report on Climate Change would be a good place to start. Hundreds if not thousands of books have been written on the subject of species loss related to deforestation, habitat loss, etc. I would recommend, well, just about anything by E.O Wilson.
  7. And what of babies that result despite she and he taking all possible precautions? Contraceptives are not foolproof and come pre-packed with a failure rate. Are you suggesting that even contraceptive using married couples should abstain from sex altogether unless they are prepared to have a child? Whose world are we living in now?
  8. I would ask you to clarify. Look, it is no longer possible to pretend that nature is something that just happens out there, and that we are merely subject to its forces and its whims. We live in a culture so embedded in denial about human effects of consumption that we seem to now regard the natural wilderness as mere grist for amusement parks. We seem so disconnected to nature or to its delicate balancing acts that we have no regard for the consequence of our continuing intrusions into its innermost workings. We seem to have forgotten our dependence on the elements of the natural world in
  9. Thanks for the non-constructive feedback, Bob. Your non-post made the thread. Are you going to do that thing where you hop in, make some personal attacks, act shocked and offended when I respond in kind, and then scurry away in mock disgust? Is this going to be one of those times, Bob?
  10. That may or may not be true, some of that cost might be passed along to consumers, but I
  11. Those ideals might start looking better when viewed through the lens of a Mad Max-style future of sorts
  12. My point was not that the role of government should be increased, but that big business has more of an influence on Washington than the other way around
