  1. I love the Autumn Defense records and you are entitled to your opnions as is everyone else. "A Shot in the Arm," to me, is boring. I do like the ending, indicating the desire to change, but the bulk of the song reminds me of someone on a bender. However, if I am "dead" to you, preach on brother!

It was actually meant as a joke. I take it you're not a Colbert fan, are ya?

Trust me, I'm not gonna insult someone's choice of fav/least fav Wilco tunes: it was hard enough picking the "least favs" of the group. The fact that you're here and I'm here shows we have something in common with our musical taste, right?

    :cheers

  2. Least Favorite - A Shot in the Arm

Aaaand you're dead to me. :hmm

    My list:

I Must Be High > Just That Simple

Misunderstood > Outtamind (Sesame Street Version)

Wilco > Bragg (One By One > Christ For Pres)

    Summerteeth > My Darling

Wilco > Bragg (Secret Of The Sea > Blood Of The Lamb)

Poor Places > Kamera (which is still > I must Be High)

Handshake Drugs > Less Than You Think

Lots of "It's Just that Simple" hatas too! I know it's kind or a crappy song but Mr. Stirratt has only contributed one song to a Wilco album (I think) so I decided not to knock it.

He's also contributed many a wonderful song to Autumn Defense albums. I feel unashamed to admit I absolutely do not like his single Wilco contribution.

  3. Just pick up the newest Golden Smog record: it's so heavy on the Gary Louris-led tunes that it's practically a companion to Smile or Rainy Day Music although I really wouldn't put any of the new GS stuff on par with even those two albums.

They're on "hiatus" though although who knows? Maybe we'll get a Louris/Olsen record sometime in the next few years. That'd be sweet.

  4. The only DBT album I've been able to force myself into buying based on people's praises here on VC is "The Dirty South." I like roughly half the album, but find the songs I do like to be forgettable. All of Patterson Hood's songs make me cringe and nearly all of Mike Cooley's are good. It's an album that I don't think was worth the 13 bucks I paid, but it doesn't make me feel like I wasted the money either.

As a disclaimer to all of this, I must admit I'm not a big southern rock fan but I do dig it at times. And, even though I don't particularly like Neil Young all that much, his music has been so influential and the dude is still cool and speaks his mind when and where he wants to even at the age of 60 when most musicians have either 1) hung it up or 2) turned to crappy love songs and various other mind-numbing lyrics.

  5. same here. i've stopped saying so because i tend to get called a misogynist, but anyway, one instance i can really get into female vocals is when they are countered with deep male vocals e.g. the mark lanegan/isobel campbell album or the band sons and daughters.

It's not misogynistic IMO. I just don't enjoy that quality a whole lot in a rock song for some reason. As I said before, Lucinda's voice is awesome and I love when she has that angry tone in her rocked-up tunes. And I love Norah's voice: it really compliments her piano playing.

  6. :lol Thanks Evonne.

I do have some good ones coming up:

    9/26 Band Of Horses

    9/30 Jenny Lewis

    10/1 Matt Nathanson

    10/4 Ben Kweller

10/6 Clap Your Hands Say Yeah

    10/21 Lucero

    10/22 Regina Spektor

    10/24 Bob Dylan

AND I've already got my tickets... :dancing

I'm sorta jealous. All I got is Wilco (10/7), Wilco (10/8), and Jay Bennett (10/23).

  7. i've never been able to listen all the way through.... risking being shunned by some i have to say that i can't stand loretta lynn's voice... everytime i hear a song from the album i wish there was an instrumental version or something. i love the production work (yay jack white) and i love his guitar work throughout but as soon as she starts singing i have to stop listening.

There aren't many female vocalists I like a whole lot. The only one I really like is Lucinda Williams (although that live album kinda sucks). Other than that, I think Norah Jones is pretty good sometimes. I love Portland, Oregon on this album and that's really it. I have trouble making it through the rest of the thing, but the music is pretty solid most of the time.

  8. worth noting:

Brendan Benson is the engineer for that album.

Jack Lawrence and Patrick Keeler of Greenhonres and Racanteurs fame are also in the backing band.

In other words, all 4 of the memebers of The Racanteurs are involved in the making of this album

Not to be a jerk or anything...Benson actually is only the engineer for "Little Red Shoes" according to the liner notes, but I never did notice the Raconteurs connection. Thanks for pointing it out.

  9. This is my first YLT album (I bought it on a whim) and while they didn't beat my ass, this album definitely kicks some serious ass. What a great record from the Spiders-esque first track all the way through Beatle-esque pop tunes and punkish rockers.

This is most likely gonna end up a top 5 album for me this year.

  10. Well there is a song called What Light and, obviously, Walken is a direct reference to Jesus Christ our one true Lord and Savior.

I should also mention that Jeff uses the word "you" a lot in "Is That The Thanks I Get?" and with a little capitalization in the liner notes, that "you" becomes "You." Think about it.

  11. As far as I'm concerned, getting the 3-disc set "How The West Was Won" is enough. It's got nearly all the modern rock radio treasures and some killer 20+ minute versions of Dazed and Confused and Whole Lotta Love. This collection reminds me a lot of a Dead show: the first set is relatively short songs and the second set really turns the corner and takes you to an area of music not many bands can get to.

  12. I'm not much for the new Golden Smog CD. Does anyone else notice that the band is now essentially The Jayhawks? I'm amused that the Jayhawks "broke up", and then this CD comes out.

I like Gary Louris, but something has gone awry with his lyrics...case in point - that "Corvette" song. Ugh.

"Long Time Ago" is pretty good...I could use a few more of those. I was suprised when Tweedy ended up having such limited involvement...it seems like his songwriting is swinging around to this type of band.

    --nt--

It really is almost like a new post-Olson Jayhawks record...and I believe it would be the worst one yet. The album really isn't that good and I was really let down by it. In a year of great music, this one is a major lowpoint. It also could have used more Jeff on it as the songs he is in are the highlights for me.

OMG!!! Like, this is all the shit I've been looking for for months. Thank you SO MUCH for bringing this to my attention.

Seriously, you have a nice days too, okay?

  14. It wasn't among my favorites when I first got into Summerteeth, but it's grown on me over time, now it's probably one of my top 5 all time Wilco songs.

Same here. Also, the more I play it on guitar, the more I love it. At first it was the song I skipped over to get to "Loneliness," but now, not so much.

  15. Linky

At first I thought it was the song from Oddjob Jack or whatever the show was Jeff wrote the song for, but came to the conclusion this is referring to something totally different.

Has anyone heard this and what the hell is it?

Edit: Okay, I just found this, and it made me sad...real sad. It's obviously the Jeff of the beloved band to which this message board is dedicated.

  16. "Give me my money back,

    Give me my money back,

    You bitch.

    I want my money back.

    And don't forget

To give me back my black T-shirt."

    - Ben Folds

    Great song--great lyrics.

And I totally empathize with you Jaymie. I'm 22 and had been with my high school sweetheart throughout college despite a semi-long-distance (180 miles apart) relationship. Throughout our 4 years in college, I made that nearly 400-mile trek every other weekend in order to be with her. She didn't have a car at school and had no means of seeing me if I didn't drive there.

Two days before we were to graduate, she told me she didn't think she was ready to move in together or get engaged...this after she had been the one obsessing over it for three years. I had made all the necessary arrangements (living quarters, etc.) and was all ready and totally prepared (a new one for me :P ) when she dropped this bomb on me.

Needless to say, graduation was miserable and the past 4 months haven't been a breeze either.

Now, something I should mention here is: my ex- is Muslim (her parents are from Pakistan) and that was always a rough point in our relationship although she was always more than willing to leave them...or so she said. :hmm Anyways, even at 21 years old, they wouldn't condone her being out of the house after 9 p.m. and threatened to kick her out if she did it again (the day after we saw Wilco together). That's the kind of thing I dealt with and still stayed with her.

In the end, I feel a bit used and very alone. Having been with her since I was 17, I'm 100% inexperienced at the dating thing (we were friends before we started dating so the transition was easy). I have followed through with the plans we had made and moved from the Northwest 'burbs of Chicago to a place in southeastern Indiana that is roughly 45 miles from Cincinnati, Ohio. Now I have no friends close and am working 50 hours a week, Wednesday through Sunday, leaving me no real good time to meet new people.

The main song that got me through the break-up was Dylan's "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright." No song I found could encapsulate my feelings about her so entirely although, admittedly, my feelings have recently gone from sadness to complete hatred of her. I feel like I was giving 70% in comparison to her 30%. But that's another rant for another time.

"It ain't no use to sit and wonder why, babe

    It don't matter, anyhow

An' it ain't no use to sit and wonder why, babe

If you don't know by now

When your rooster crows at the break of dawn

Look out your window and I'll be gone

    You're the reason I'm trav'lin' on

Don't think twice, it's all right

It ain't no use in turnin' on your light, babe

    That light I never knowed

An' it ain't no use in turnin' on your light, babe

I'm on the dark side of the road

Still I wish there was somethin' you would do or say

To try and make me change my mind and stay

We never did too much talkin' anyway

So don't think twice, it's all right

It ain't no use in callin' out my name, gal

    Like you never did before

It ain't no use in callin' out my name, gal

I can't hear you any more

I'm a-thinkin' and a-wond'rin' all the way down the road

    I once loved a woman, a child I'm told

I give her my heart but she wanted my soul

But don't think twice, it's all right

I'm walkin' down that long, lonesome road, babe

    Where I'm bound, I can't tell

But goodbye's too good a word, gal

So I'll just say fare thee well

I ain't sayin' you treated me unkind

You could have done better but I don't mind

You just kinda wasted my precious time

But don't think twice, it's all right"

Those ending lyrics summarize what I feel about the relationship. That song alone is my mix. Sorry for the lengthy tale.

  17. I'm only good for an album or two at a time. I mean to really get to know them and appreciate the music. To know whether it's good, bad or I'm indifferent. I'm still very high on Modern Times which completely took over from the new Tom Petty which I thought was pretty good until Dylan came to town. Hopefully I can get back to the Petty. I'm looking forward to the new Richard Bruckner, MMJ and Beck . It looks like I'll have at least a little time between releases of those three. Thanks for posting the info on these. I'm really out of touch. B)

I like the new Petty better than the new Dylan, but they're both freakin' great.

I have an hour commute to work, so buying a bunch of new albums is good for me because I'll have plenty of time to listen to them. Lately, I've sorted my CD collection out so that only the 2006 releases I have are in the car so I'm basically forced to listen to them repeatedly and really hear them (this isn't a bad thing as radio in southern Indiana blows).

There are about 10 more releases I plan to get this year: Starflyer 59 (tomorrow), My Morning Jacket, Scissor Sisters, Decemberists, Jet, Willie Nelson, Tenacious D, Sufjan Stevens X-mas Box Set, and Modest Mouse. I may even pick up the new Yo La Tengo tomorrow based on the two songs I've heard and the sparkling reviews.

My top 5 for the year are still Destroyer, Tom Petty, Minus 5, Bob Dylan, and Loose Fur (in that order). Lots of great music this year though.

  18. Does anyone think that the Scissor Sisters have any mainstream appeal? Please let me know.

    LouieB

I like their first album a lot, but the that new single makes me wanna freakin' barf. Bringing back falsetto-led disco is something I could have done without. I'll still by the album but my expectations are low...real low.

I do think they have mainstream appeal, but it's more based overseas than here.

  19. I love, love, love this song and wonder if some of you kind souls might send some exceptional live versions to the rest of us? Also, please recommend other artists' versions of this wonderfully sad song. The version I have does not have steel guitar solo, which I'm sure I've heard somewhere...

    Thanks.

    :wine

I have a Johnny Cash version of it where the chord progression is much different and the verses are totally switched around. I may dig it up later and put it up or something. But first, I gotta work for 10 hours so...maybe around midnight tonite if I remember.

  20. Years ago I made a Pig mix cassette...I'll break it out at work today :music

I've been tempted to make a mix disc of Pigpen's stuff, but frankly, it'd be half-filled with a 30-minute version of "Turn On Your Lovelight."

What a classic voice from such a classic act.

  21. Destroyer - Rubies

I was reading through everyone's lists looking specifically to see if I'd be the only one to contribute this song. Thank god I'm not. Great freakin' choice.

    My list of favs:

    Destoyer - Rubies

    Television - Marquee Moon

White Stripes - Ball & Biscuit

Decemberists - The Tain (5 songs put together or not, it's one awesome track)

    Decemberists - Bagman's Gambit

Sufjan Stevens - Detroit, Lift Up Your Weary Head!

Sufjan Stevens - Vito's Ordination Song

Semisonic - I Wish (before you criticize, it's Gary Louris on guitar so bite me)

Rolling Stones - Midnight Rambler (off Get Yer Ya-Yas Out)

Neutral Milk Hotel - Oh Comely

    Ryan Adams - Nobody Girl

    and of course:

    Wilco - Spiders

    Loose Fur - Laminated Cat

Loose Fur - Good Chinese Apple

    Loose Fur - Wreckroom

And pretty much every live Grateful Dead tune.
