  1. Lyrically, the songs remind me more of Being There.

Musically, the songs remind me more of AM.

    Being There makes me happy.

    AM makes me happy.

    Therefore, the new songs...

  2. I must be on a completely different planet from you folks with regards to this album.

Let me say here: I have listened to people's opinions on here about The Decemberists, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Spoon, countless other bands and, even the last Joe Strummer album that came out several years back. And I've loved each of those opinions, but...

As I sit here and listen to Kid A for the first time in roughly 6 months, I still don't "get it." It still sounds like meandering, aimless stuff to me. I see this thing hailed as a masterpiece roughly everywhere I look (and OK Computer too for that matter), but I just don't see it. IMO, there are some beautiful moments on the album (most occur during "How To Disappear"), but I'm still failing to see the genius of it. There are several songs where I feel that there's no song really. Treefingers, for instance, reminds me entirely of the last 4 minutes of "Reservations" on YHF (an album that gets unfairly compared to Kid A by bunches of critics, but I can find 11 songs I love on YHF) and has no real substance. Can someone explain to me why this album is a "masterpiece" and deserves the 10.0 it has received on Pitchfork? I can read nothing from that article other than "If Thom Yorke was here right now, I'd go down on him in a heartbeat."

It should be noted here that I've mildly enjoyed most of their "singles:" Karma Police, Creep, etc. but whole albums, not really.

  3. Does anyone here pray?

Nope. It never works unless you get off your ass and work towards the goal yourself.

As far as Wilco making it to your desired location, I highly doubt that 1) it'll happen or 2) praying or getting off your ass will help.

In a situation like that, I guess "prayer" is just as helping as "hoping" then. I'll be hoping they decide to announce a date in the Southeast for your sake though. :thumbup

  4. from what i've read, this was a pretty emotional show because it was their first large festival since the roskilde incident.

Want to enlighten me as to what happened? That seems to be a story I've never heard before.

Edit: Never mind. I googled it.

  5. Who is gonna be coming out of your stereo when someone asks you to play your favorite artist between dylan and wilco? Who would be your choice? Dylan show or Wilco show? Dinner with Jeff or Bob? YHF or Blonde on Blonde? :music

    1) Tweedy's voice is more accessible than Dylan's so I'd play Tweedy (plus, everyone's heard of Dylan by now or has heard him already)

    2) Wilco is killer live and Bob has been known to suffer at times

    3) Jeff would be more engaging in conversation these days I do believe.

    4) Blonde on Blonde>Summerteeth>YHF

As I was born in 1984, a lot of Dylan's music doesn't have a whole lot of relevance to the time period I grew up in. However, that's not to say I don't love Bob's stuff. In fact, I'm working on buying his albums one at a time here and I love all of them.

  6. I hope this is all a misunderstanding, and someday we can laugh at this all while at a Wilco show and listening to a song I don't care too much for.

    Sounds like a plan.

Sadly, if I hadn't just started a new job, I'd be hitting many more than the Cincy and Louisville shows and may have that opportunity. I'd be able to catch the Purdue show and possibly the East Lansing one too if I wasn't in a training position. Bummer.

  7. Good point, your right I don't give a damn about Wilco shows, sorry your not so lucky!I am glad that it is O.K. with you to tell people who should go to shows or not.I am planning on going to the Springfeild and Wichita shows, please PM and let me know if it's alright if I go.I'm also sorry for going to back to back shows and wanting to hear different tunes,I am so sorry for saying the first night wasn't so great but they played CandyFloss the next night and that rocked.I know,I know,it's so wrong to go to a show wanting to hear a certain song or songs for that matter........shame on me.

Next time you go and make an observation like that, you better know me personally. :thumbup

Where in my post did I say you couldn't go? Nice over-reaction there.

What I DID say that you apparently did not understand the first time was this:

    1) You still want to go to plenty of shows.

    2) You know what most of the set will be and yet you're still whining about the setlist.

    to which I replied:

    1) If you don't like it, you don't have to go. No one is forcing you, although you seem to believe I was up until about 2 hours ago.

    2) Go in with the expectation that you will get a great band at the top of their game and only that expectation and you will enjoy the show.

I hope this easy to read summary will help you understand my points (none of which was a direct order to you telling you not to go to shows).

I totally understand wanting to go back to back nights and hear different tunes but the fact remains, the band is pushing a certain set of songs right now (and, if you'll notice, they've got over 5 new ones they're tossing in there). I'm going to Cincy and Louisville b2b and I'm just happy to be in attendance, really. These will be my 23rd and 24th Wilco shows and I'm going in with the expectations I went with on my first show back at the Rock the River show...one: I expect them to put on a really solid performance. Through 22 shows, I haven't been disappointed if I go in with that one expectation. In fact, that's the expectation I go to every concert with and I find that, more times than not, I have a good time.

  8. That would be great for us who are tired of AGIB,and could know ahead of time when to go home. :cheers

Well I'm glad some of us have money to burn on shows they don't really give a damn about. I wish I was so lucky.

I, for one, don't care about the "encore system." Whatever they want to do is fine by me. As long as they play for a reasonable amount of time (90 mins +) I couldn't care less.

I'm one of those people whose concert motto is "If you don't like how they set it up, what they play, or what they do on stage, don't even go." Just don't whine about it later because you've seen the band 30 times and all the shows are "running together" or say "I've seen them play Spiders 18 times and I'm sick of it!" It's stupid and, when you think about it, why are you going if you know that you're not going to really wanna hear half of what they play? :punch It just doesn't make sense to me.

I go into every show thinking "hey, I'd be happy if they played Pieholden tonight," but when they don't, I don't come out of there going, "Well, I'd say I loved the show, BUT...they played Spiders again but didn't play Pieholden."

That being said, as a Dead fan, I definitely like the two-set system, but I couldn't give a damn about making 5 dollar beer runs during the show, so...whatever they want is cool.

Oh, and ction, I don't mind the 45 minute set either...unless I'm there to see that band and the opener played a 45 minute set too. Then it's just stupid and I feel kind of cheated afterwards.

  9. So I guess that means you are a big fan of two of the most pretentious bands currently around right now, no?

    Right.

I'll remain happy listening to music I enjoy (your opinion doesn't matter to me on this one) and you can remain spiteful. Keep up the good work. :music

  10. There's a new Gin Blossoms album? :o

Yeah and you're missing NOTHING. The first track is okay, second track is okay, last 11 tracks are freakin' awful. Especially an awful tune titled "Super Girl." :barf That song title alone should have screamed "Don't buy the album!!" at me, but I still have a soft spot for several '90s bands.

Oh, and Lizish, I was referring to you mentioning the Decemberists as a band I'd be "embarassed" to have liked come 2010 or whatever.

If so, toss Wilco in with them. They're the only band I truly like more than the Decemberists. I'm probably one of the few Decmberists fans who likes Picaresque just as much as any other release of theirs.

And The Tain is killer. I can't stop listening to it.

  11. 0 albums, one Beastie Song on a compilation and a few on a soundtrack.

I can't stand rap, don't view most of it as something that I would necessarily consider listenable music.

99% of rap I've heard is trite, radio-made junk that high school girls listen to, so I guess that doesn't help my opinion of it any.

That being said, the rappers I've been told are "good" by people whose musical opinion I respect I also have no desire to hear ever again.

I do like old Beastie Boys stuff, however. I just can't justify buying an album because hearing the occasional cut on the radio is enough for me.

  12. Besides, this is a message board. Sometimes disagreement and the intentional derailment of topics is fun and welcome, especially when it is one of those bands that y'all will be embarrassed to say you listened to in about 5 years.

I still love Fastball...this from 8 years ago. And if it weren't for the new Soul Asylum, Pearl Jam, and Gin Blossom records, I may still be able to say I like a bunch of other '90s bands. I still like their '90s stuff though...

Wanna try tossing another one at me? :P

  13. Yeah, I'm trying to figure out how I get the record here in the US. All the releases are overseas and the Amazon/Buy.com sites list them at 25 dollar imports.

We're From Barcelona is such a catchy tune though. It's been stuck in my head for days...

  14. Lord, I hate this band.

This is how I feel about Radiohead.

This is also why I DON'T post in Radiohead topics unless I have something relevant to say. I'd like to think I set a good example on that one that some people might follow.

Oh, and I can't wait for this album and sadly, I don't have the pleasure of downloading the leak as you folks do.

  15. We were at lollapalooza together and afterwards he said he didn't think the Flaming Lips were musically that good live, more just like a circus. So i can rebel by liking them!

Musically, they're an incredible studio band that leaves a lot to be desired *musically* in their live set. Your father was right on in his assessment of their live set: it's more like an act than a concert.

Also, I'm 22 and in the same boat with my father. He introduced me to Son Volt after Trace came out (initially hated it), but we discovered UT and Wilco (initially hated Summerteeth) together and have attended upwards of 6 Wilco shows together. It's not a bad thing considering he's purchased nearly all of those tickets...

Other bands/acts we've seen live together: The Jayhawks, Son Volt, Fastball, Richard Thompson, Mellencamp, Fogerty, and Jackson Browne.

I don't have a problem rebelling when I get a buncha tickets to shows I wouldn't mind checking out.

I still can't get him listening to Clap Your Hands, Arcade Fire, New Pornographers (I'm trying really hard too), or Destroyer though. Oh well.

  16. He still remains one of my favorites. I don't find him boring at all.

I saw him open for Semisonic back right as Musicforthemorningafter came out and was blown away.

I'll be getting his new one next week when it comes out.

  17. I think the new songs are excellent musically. I love the space that's left for Nels to work in them. But I agree, on the other hand, that the lyrics are sub-par. However, I really don't care. I think we've yet to hear all the songs anyways, so I'm not concerned. I'll still buy the album the day it comes out and listen to it for weeks I'm sure.
