I initially dislike everything he does. Then later I figure out that it's probably some of the best stuff I've heard. Cold Roses I hated for months and then finally was like "wow, this is pretty freakin' excellent." Just need some time to let it soak in, I think.

That being said, I think the song on his site rocks.

This might explain why a supposed 9-disc Winterland box set got delayed indefinitely...

Musically, I don't think much changed in terms of how much I enjoy listeningIMO after Olsen left. I still liked the music just as much. However, as stated before, lyrically Gary falls a bit short of previous expectations. Still, songs like Smile, Broken Harpoon, Tailspin, and Save It For A Rainy Day (just to name a few) are incredible tunes.

I haven't listened to this since I bought it...and with good reason. It is, as the article says, mostly crap.

After the first 3 tracks I thought I was going to be blown away because of how good those songs actually are, but the following 18 (or 20, whatever the hell the number of songs is) really don't do anything but meander and sound like half-finished songs that never really amount to anything in the same manner the tracks on Illinois do.

If I remember right, I downloaded this from somewhere other than dimeadozen and it's from the soundcheck for sure. I'm 99% sure that's right. There were a couple other songs with it but I remember listening to that and going "wow, I'm glad they didn't put this on Summerteeth or something: it's crap."

I'd repost if I could find it. Sorry all.

Don't you think the whistling gets monotonous though? That was my only complaint after seeing the guy at Summerfest. I dug *some* of the songs a lot, but got really tired of the constant whistling after about the 3rd song.

That said, Nervous Tic is a great song.

On Scalz's "International Tool" scale (1 lowest, 5 highest), I previously had Mel Gibson rated at roughly a 4.3 thanks to his "efforts" to show his view of religion. After this, I must bump his rating up to a 5.0...and I may need to readjust the scale because I believe he just set a new high.

I don't believe there's an actor I hate more, so that being said...

guess i should be lucky they're still @ First Ave here, but unless the album bowls me over, i'm not up for spending $20 to see 'em. i didn't even go last time at First Ave.

'Tis a pity. I've seen them live twice and have absolutely loved it each time. They're the only band that even comes close to Wilco's live show in my book. But hey, if you're not a big fan, I totally understand the not wanting to spend the $$ on a ticket.

What pisses me off about this tour schedule is that they're playing Chicago, Columbus, and Cleveland but they're not coming down here to Cincy. For shame...

I couldn't vote...Walken wasn't on the list.

And I love how people are already considering Walken an "old song." As I recall, Jeff was playing Heavy Metal Drummer and ITMWLY a full 2.5 years before YHF even came out. Walken is extremely new.

I thought Last DJ was pretty bad minus a few songs, but absolutely LOVE Echo. Still, nothing touches Wildflowers for me, but it's all a matter of opinion.

As long as we can all agree that Petty still rocks, I'm cool.

Other than that, I have nothing to contribute here.

In all honesty: at its best its a laid back, slick sounding, tastefully hit packed record.

At its worst: an overrushed, less poignant Uncle Tupelo.

 

Its always strange for me cause overall I am a huge Son Volt/Farrar naysayer and a huge Wilco devotee, but when it comes down to it I would take Trace over AM in an instant. I think Wilco did the right thing by moving on, they made amazing records once they shook off their first reflex record. I think Son Volt/Farrar proceeded to paint himself in a corner. If you think this is absolutely a ridiculous criticism, you are not alone and I can respect that.

I'm actually right with you on nearly everything you said. The only place I differ is that I really, really still enjoy Straightaways (when you take out some of Jay's awful out-of-key singing in the later tracks on that album). However, I thought that, while interesting, Jay's solo albums were quite terrible and seemed more like he went "hmmm, let's try this effect out." They don't feel like actual albums, more like experiments, but not in the sense that YHF was (and DEFINITELY not on the same songwriting level)...if that makes any sense.

I was, on the other hand, pleasantly surprised and pleased with the new "Son Volt" release. Some of the lyrics still make me cringe in a way Jay can only provide by opening his dictionary and going "I'll write a song about THAT word" (think Caryatid Easy, Creosote, Ipecac). I like abstract lyrics, but honestly...

Anyways, AM does, indeed, rock. I hate to compare it to UT or later Wilco efforts, but that's inevitable given the circumstances. While it isn't up to the same level as Trace, UT albums, or the following Wilco albums, it's still a freakin' great album.

My two cents anyways.

Me too--Okemah reignited my interest in SV, and I'm excited to see what happens next.

At first, I was totally negative on Okemah, but repeated listens several months later ignited some interest. While I still think Ipecac is awful and some of the other songs are sub-par lyrically, I'm much MUCH happier with the album now than I was. I also will be looking forward to this new one.

Does anyone have any recordings of these...Ive never heard the old version of Spiders, ever.

I just moved and am waiting for my dad to go with me to get a wireless router we can both agree on. So my computer isn't hooked up right now (hopefully within the next few days). I have a soundboard version of the old Spiders from Seattle in '02 that sounds excellent. If you haven't gotten it from someone by then, I'll try uploading it.

I'm in complete agreement with you otherwise.

I downloaded the demos before the album came out, mistakenly thinking it was the leaked album - and was blown away by it. I bought the record when it was released, and was left to wonder what the hell happened.

I wish more bands would do what they did with the pre-Maladroit Demos. That was just friggin' sweet checking the site in the afternoon/evening and seeing that there were 4 new demos up. Just awesome.

And yes, those demos were way better than the album and there were several songs that didn't make the album that sounded really friggin' good too.

However, after their newest one, I believe this is the right decision. There wasn't a good song on "Make Believe." Not one.

What do you folks think of the new album?

I've listened to it twice through (I finally bought an Eels album and the new Sufjan, so Soul Asylum hasn't been #1) but the first song screamed "Jon Bon Jovi" at me. His singing, the awful lyrics, "stand up and be strong." Gross...

I think the album has some redeeming qualities, but nearly every song is full of cringe-worthy lyrics that make it really hard for me to keep going.

I started to feel sad about this but, but then I remembered the song "Beverly Hills" and it made me realize that this is definitely for the best.
