  1. I'm with you guys on the whole "don't complain about the set lists" thing. It bugs me: let them play what they want to play and if you don't like the set lists, don't go to the shows. I'm sure there will be other people willing to go (Wilco "virgins" if you will) who have never seen them and would die to see them play "I'm The Man Who Loves You," "Jesus, etc." and other songs that they've played at seemingly every show since late 2001. The Summerfest show on July 5th was my 22nd show and they played what I've come to call a "standard set." Granted, I'd still rather hear two different songs than a complete run-through of Spiders, but again, let them play what they want or don't go. I still loved every second of it and, if it weren't for the stupid Fall Out Boy kids behind me who were obnoxiously drunk, I may have thought it the best show I've seen.

As for the "techincal difficulties" thing, that (IMO) only serves to make the show MORE fun and unique. The May 7th show from last year when they were recording for Kicking Television was perhaps the greatest Wilco show I've seen. Jeff got to talk more, tell some stories, and ultimately, it led to *gasp* an altered set list! It's one of those things that lets you know when a band is truly at the top of their game. The fact that they were able to get past it and play different stuff that night was incredible. The way it sounds, at this show, Jeff and the boys handled it well and still put on a great show.

  2. Just saw the new Pirates this weekend and I thought it was very entertaining. Now I have to see the last one next year. :)

I may be in the minority here, but I thought Pirates 2 sucked. I paid 9 bucks to see the midnight showing on Friday morning and felt like I wasted a night and some cash. The little comedy there was in it was juvenile at best and the movie was totally unbelievable as a follow-up to the first one.

For one, the first movie, while not very realistic, didn't seem cheesy-fake. In the second movie, I can remember at least 3 scenes where everyone in the crew should have been dead from falling (especially Sparrow's fall through 5 bridges from a height of what I presumed to be roughly 10 stories). I wasn't looking for some historical pirate tale, but c'mon...

Secondly, I really REALLY hate movies that leave a cliffhanger in the method this film does. It actually made me NOT want to see the final installment of the series. I sat bored through the first 2 hours of this film and when things finally started to get exciting and the plot FINALLY stopped standing still and started moving forward..."to be continued."

I would give the first Pirates movie a 7/10 and this one a 2/10. Such an awful follow-up to a solid original.

  3. For I Am Trying To Break Your Heart, your first step is to tune your bass guitar slightly sharp (I believe). They sped up the tape (or maybe slowed it down) after recording which leads to you, the person trying to play along, sounding horrendously out of tune. That being said...

I didn't feel like tabbing out all that John does (although maybe if provoked I might try. He bases everything around the B (7th fret, E string). He seems to alternate playing the F# and E notes on the low E and on the 7th and 9th frets of the A string. This is the basis for the whole song as the chord progression doesn't change throughout.

Now, during lines like "what was I thinking when I let go of you" during the first verse, John adds in an A after playing the F# and E on the low E. He does this for the last line of every verse.

Listen to figure out whether he's playing it high or low. He also does a few little things different in each verse. I typically don't play this song as the tuning just annoys me, so feel free to correct me/experiment with it.

  4. A Shot In The Arm is entirely D and G. That being said, the "riff" John plays for a fair portion of the song is as follows:

    G---------------------4---4-6-4---
    D---------------7-7-7---7-------7-
    A-5-5-5-5-5-5-5-------------------
    E---------------------------------

The other cool part I remember off the top of my head is towards the end of the song when Jeff is singing "oh, you've changed." John works from a G down to a D by playing:

    G---------------
    D-5-4-2-0-------
    A---------2-0-5-
    E---------------

He bends the A-string a bit when he hits the second fret too.

Otherwise, this song is pretty much straight up D and G--just do what I do and get creative with it. Try something different.

  5. If it's "okay" in his country, shouldn't the media take it to the extreme and refer to Ozzie as a "fag" everytime he does something wrong? Apparently, it's okay with him. If it's okay to use that homophobic epithet, why not?

I've always thought Ozzie was a scumbag as a person, but a great baseball man. After this episode, it's hard for me to even compliment his baseball skills: it'd be about halfway to calling John Wayne Gacy a "sweet-looking clown."

  6. Okay, it's finals week but I only have a meaningless one left so...

Anyone need a particular song (I can do PKB--just say the word)? I can make attempts this week since no work and little school means Scalz can play.

  7. Here we go...

Get the beat of the song down and this should help. It's extremely close to what they play on the album.

  8. It's Drop D with Capo on 2 using three chords with (as previously stated) various hammer-ons and such. The three chords I play are:

    D-000232

    A-x02220

    G-020033

And I believe someone earlier in the thread already tabbed the little riff Jeff does.

I've been working on this book for a couple months now. It's almost 1100 pages long, but it's brilliant historical fiction about a archaeologist dig in the '60s where they uncover artifacts dating back to caveman days. Each artifact is then explained with a separate story. All the stories work together to show the reader a complete history of the site of the dig. It's really a fascinating concept and brilliantly written.

  10. I just drop D and capo on 2 and play this for the riff (I'm pretty sure this is how Jeff did it solo last time I saw him):

    D chord, then:

    E-2 (let ring)--

    B-3 (let ring)--

    G-2-------------

    D---2-4-2-0----

    A-------------2-

    D-0 (let ring)--

Hope that makes sense--I'm not proficient at tabbing either.
