  1. Playing for big bucks at Reading and Leeds festivals.

Always gonna happen when the cash ran out. Doherty was big news for quite some time in the British tabloid media (waiting for him to kill himself basically). Still, they had a certain magic in a DIY 1976 kind of way. The sound of a band breaking up and wonderful video from their London Forum gigs before it all fell apart http://bit.ly/fU1hd

British media already in a lather about them coming back.

  2. And I thank you very much for that. :thumbup

I'm up for this too. Have in-laws in Paris and I can tell you there are lots of English and Americans who live and work on the west side of the city.

Go there every xmas. How about a nice intimate gig at La Cigale? I'd be there like a shot and so would my two teenage nephews who I've weaned onto Wilco these past few years.

    Daft Punk anyone?

  3. me too...

slightly disappointed about it being a seated venue... they don't seem to bring the best out of Jeff

the google sandbag tickets wilco took me to the wilcoworld tickets section and got in from there. all a bit starnge though - they've obviously shifted a hundred plus tickets already.

anyway it is a big venue with a cavernously high roof - saw Divine Comedy, Sigur Ros, Ryan Adams and Dexy's there. there'll be plenty of good tickets left on friday

  4. It's all up and running. Pre-sale though has now sold out. Just got in there in time - front three rows hopefully. They're saying Row D E F and R(?)available for general sale on March 5th.

went in through google under search 'sandbag wilco tickets' and got in first time

Pricey though 37 quid plus fees etc.

  5. seems to be problems with the sandbag site, also a few unhappy bunnies around re sandbag and other ticket sales

  6. The BBC are pulling then plug on BBC 6Music because it's not popular enough. The death of alternative radio - a disgrace. Big outcry among music fans over here.

You can twitter protests on #saveBBC6music

A great radio station - noting like it anywhere else in the UK - equivalent I guess of NPR in the US.

    Yours, disgusted.

  7. Have been curious about Banhart for years without ever taking the plunge.

Picked up the new album and went to see him at Shepherds Bush in London. A revelation! It's been a while since I've seen someone with as much onstage magnetism - so laid back but such a charming and charismatic front man. Band were fantastic, note perfect but loose in all the right ways. Very impressed - Devendra looks every inch the rock star. So much variety too - shades of Bolan, Ferry even the Scissor Sisters along with some great bluesy psych rock and the pretty quiet stuff.

Also the trendiest crowd I think I've ever seen at a London gig which is saying something.

    Nice review here:

    http://www.forfolkssake.com/articles/569

ps what is it with people who talk all the way through shows. Was next to two blokes who spent the entire first half hour loudly discussing how much they liked Banhart without listening to a note of the show.

  8. Saw NY's The Antlers last night at Bush Hall in Shepherds Bush (just round the corner from the SB Empire).

Very impressed, they looked at home in the grand ornate old hall with huge chanadeliers hanging from the ceiling. Guitar, drums and keyboards (no bass but didn't miss it such was the cacophony tumbling from the keyboard player).

Epic yet arty - shades of Grizzly Bear, Jeff Buckley and even My Bloody Valentine. Couldn't help noticing though that one of the tracks off their 'Hospice' album entitled 'Two' sounds alot like 'A Perfect Sonnet' by Bright Eyes and I can't for the life of me think what 'Bear' reminds me of but it's been in my head all day (I thought it might have been something by Okkervil River but not so sure now).

Second time at Bush Hall in a week. Alberta Cross sounding very good again there last week. Spoiled we are in London!

  9. Just remembered a nice bit of audience/Jeff banter. About eight songs in, after a couple of quieter, newish ones, someone yells out "play the hits!". Jeff replies "Play the hits? Where have you been man? These are the hits!".

Dude: they also played the Green Man festival in the UK, just before the Troxy. But of course there are 60 million people in the UK....

Yep, was at all three gigs in the UK this summer/autumn-winter. Without a doubt Forum was the pick of the three. Great to see Tweedy so 'up for it' again, lost a bit of weight and is on fire at the moment.

By the way great review above in The Indy. Always though Andy Gill who wrote it was the Andy Gill from Gang Of Four, but not the case apparently. A different one.

  10. Great setlist. That's pretty crazy about the power failure, although the conspiracy theorist in me says the venue cut the power to enforce a curfew. :monkey

Not sure it was a curfew cut off. The power only seemed to be off on Pat's side of the stage and they tried to fix it for minute or so. Jeff then said something about not being able to finish the set then dashed off into the wings for another minute or so while the crowd booed, only to return with one of his acoustic guitars and lean over the front of the stage to give us his unplugged version of SES (you could hear him fine from in front of the mixing desk where I was but was probably a bit of a strain further back under the balcony)

By the way, I reckon over half the set was different from Troxy in August which was great. I noticed he played the songs off The Album which he didn't play in London last time and left off most of the ones he did play at Troxy, even Wilco The Song which surprised me. Variety any day of the week for me. Top night and the singing was top notch on Jesus, as was the 'Glenn, Glenn, Glenn' chant before ITMWLY.

  11.

Only a few lowlights: everyone around me got a setlist and I didn't; and we didn't get Monday or Outtasight (which I'd requested, too).

On the subject of requests was expecting Say You Miss Me as this won the most votes on the website - shame, would love to have heard that.

As you say, lot of Americans there last night, normal though, I guess, as this is London. Amazing too how much Jeff has changed his onstage persona playing here. Used to be very uptight for some reason (possibly because London crowds are hard to please). That said, some people used to like going to Wilco gigs just to wind him up. It made for quite a spectacle when the old Tweedy venom got going and added to the entertainment value. Much happier in his own skin these days though and he seemed very happy last night - though it took him nearly half the show to say anything at all. Thereafter he was babbling away between every song - he ought to do that from the start - he's an engaging and very entertaining front man when he gets the banter going, just seems to take ages to warm up.

Enjoy the European mainland shows whoever's going!

  12. Never seen Tweedy so relaxed as he was tonight. Very quiet for first ten songs or so but then never shut up. Amazing end - power failure before they got the chance to play Outtasite and Monday (which were scheduled according to Stan) so we got Someone Else's Song solo acoustic and without power to finish off. Thought it was gonna be Acuff Rose for a moment there but great nonetheless.

    Setlist in order:

    Ashes...

    BBN

    Shot In The Arm

    Side With The Seeds

    IATTBYH

    One Wing

    I'll Fight

    PKB

    Box Full Of Letters

    Theologians

ITMWLY (big Jeff build up for Glenn who did his best ever showboating on the drum risers)

    Hummingbird

    -------------

    VC

    Spiders

    -------------

    Late Greats

    HMD

    Walken

    Someone Else's Song (solo unplugged)

  13. According to the Forum web site it's the Clientele at 7.30 and Wilco at 8.30.

    Don't be late!

8.30 would be great but I got 9 off the guy at Nonesuch in London. Sounds about right too

  14. ... or when The Clientele are on - I'd like to catch them too if poss ... I'm guessing they'll be on around 8:00 with Wilco at about 9:15 but would be good to get this confirmed

Wilco on at 9pm - curfew at 11 usually.

Let's hope we get plenty of variety from thew Troxy show in August. Interesting choice in the lead in the requests section on the website - Say You Miss Me. Would certainly settle for that. And Kamera, Misunderstood, Magazine, PKB, Reservations.......(and I vote for Spiders to be rested just this once!)

  15. Ah...I've never heard anyone refer to a self-titled album as S/T. Yes, I know their albums and have them all...this one is particularly good.

Saw them in a little backroom of a pub in Winchester, England about a year ago. About 50 people standing around watching them and they were charming. Pat has a better voice then you might think - blue eyed soul. Nice small gig, was chatting to both of them in the bar and picked up the latest CD off the little table at the back of the room. John even recommended which one to buy and thanked me for it. Very humble guy.

  16. I wouldn't want to be at a show where they didn't play Handshake Drugs, IATTBYH, and A Shot in the Arm.

Ahh, well I WOULD! I'd love to see them do some quality covers as well as some of the many underperformed gems in the catalogue. Interestimng to note that thus far 'Say You Miss Me' is up front as top request for the London Nov 4th show. I'll settle for that. But seriously, I just think if you're playing the same stuff night after night it HAS to have some effect - make it becaome a bit of a job. A little reinvention of lesser played stuff would surely bring some extra spark for the band. After all, didn't Tweedy himself say how much he loved rediscovering the stuff they played at the Chicago residency and then subsequently played on the tour that followed?

  17. I listened to their myspace and these guys are fantastic.

Top drawer harmonies and great tunes. They've taken a big leap last few months especially as the record is being played on places like BBC 6 Music. They're suddenly headlining The Forum in London, same venue Wilco are playing on Nov 4th. Impressive step forward. But you can hear why. Great record.

  18. This thread seems as a good as any to ask something i've been wondering for awhile. I've always wondered about a few name pronunciations (I feel very lame not knowing this btw). Is Glenn's last name pronounced "Koch" or "Kochee" or some other variation? And is Mikael's name pronounced "Mick-ale" or "Michael"? I really ought to know this but I figured I would just get it straightened out for certain.

    Thanks :thumbup

  19. Kicking up a bit of a storm over here.

English renegade folkies led by a 22 year-old from Middle England who sounds like he's been gargling Jack Daniels for twice that time - you'd swear they're from the American south. Babbling banjos and gaining a big live rep right now. Just released debut album - it's pretty good.

Loving 'Awake My Soul' and 'Little Lion Man' but it's strong right through the 12 tracks. Watch 'em fly!

  20. Anyone else agree that the live Collins version of 'Cinema Show' on 'Seconds Out' is way better than the Gabriel studio original.

Not so much the vocal, but the long keyboard solo is just amazing - sonically so much betteer than the underwhelming (in comparison) studio recording.

  21. More to the point, if they had an album cover that featured Carpet Munchers...now that I would buy!

Get James McFadden fit soon will ya? I have him on my fantasy footie team and he's fooking injured!

Yep, out for a while. You could alweays flog him and get Christain 'Chucho' Benitez instead! He's gonna be good.
