  1. I never knew they did Breathe in soundchecks... Any tapes of that floating around?

Have a feeling they played it in one of the Dublin soundchecks in 2007 - sure I read about it here somewhere. Funnily enough I saw one of those soundchecks in Dublin , but sadly it wasn't the one I caught some of.

  2. I am not a frequent flyer here, but I did not see this question noted here. Does anyone feel that Wilco's Muzzle of Bees is reminiscent of early Genesis, especially the track Stagnation on the album Trespass?

Well seeing as Wilco have been known top play Floyd's 'Breathe' in soundchecks I don't think it's unreasonable that they now cover 'The Carpet Crawlers' on the next record...

  3. I think there was some good stuff post-Duke but it was just a bit thin on the ground. I also feel that, in a pop context, Invisible Touch is a really good album. Not to my taste, but still very good. 'Home By The Sea' is a good tune, as is 'Domino' and 'The Brazilian'. I was reading about the Duke album recently and apparently a few of the tracks were originaly written to be one long song, a kind of eighties 'Suppers Ready'. That could have been interesting. I believe the songs that were originaly all linked were Behind The Line, Duchess, Guide Vocal, Dukes Travels and Duke End.

P.s....Birmingham City? You want to be supporting Spurs mate!!!

Born and grew up in Brum so life sentence assured....

Spurs? Harry's bubble will burst.Bit lucky when we played you the other week - very late goal when we could have nicked it. Was at the Brum derby last weekend - nasty match (but just the way I like it) Villa really hate us - but its mutual.

  4. Looks like any chance of a proper Genesis tour in the near future may have gone. Phil Colins has had to retire from the drum-stool (all he was good for?) due to ongoing back problems. Aparently he did some seroius damage to his vertebrae on the last re-union tour and won't be playing again. Can live without the re-union shows tbh but I would really love to see them back in the studio with Gabriel and Hackett as I feel they could create something interesting. Maybe an update of Selling England By The Pound with some social commentry on the state of the UK at the moment.

In reference to the above point, I felt similary sad watching Mr.Banks of the Rome DVD. He was always the soul of that band but it seemed that the power shifted over to Collins in the mid-eighties. Has anyone ever checked out the Tony Banks solo records? Is there anything worth picking up out there? He never seemed to break out in the same way as Collins/Gabriel/Rutherford and Hackett.

Saw Genesis on the Duke tour in Cardiff around late 70's just when they were starting to go dire. Remember them playing stuff like Cinema Show which I loved. But the new stuff was not good - guess all the punk/new wave stuff was taking over by then and for those bands Genesis were the enemy: to be destroyed. And that was fair enough - pre-Duke they were a great band but afterwards truly embarrassing.

  5. Been listening to the debut album by Alberta Cross, Anglo-Swedish duo who left London for New York last year and mushroomed into a powerful five-piece.

Started off as just two of them playing a folky blues but they've grown into a rocking monster playing melodic, soulful rock and blues. Some top tunes and great, soaring, lonesome vocal from Swedish front man.

Recommended, watch out for them. Think they played Bonaroo, SXSW and Glastonbury. First full length album out next week I think. Short seven-track taster came out a couple of years ago. MMJ, Band Of Horses, Neil Young fans will like it.

  6. I saw them at Nissan Pavilion last year. The entire night was torrential downpours in every surrounding county. Nissan is an outdoor amphitheater. Needless to say, everyone that wasn't under the pavilion was soaked.

When they got to the "rain down" chorus in Paranoid Android, it was one of the most amazing moments I've ever experienced at a concert, as the thousands of soaked lawn dwellers realized what they were screaming. Intense stuff.

But yea, incredible live band in every sense of the word. If you haven't seen the clip of Karma Police live at Glastonbury 2003, then go find that. The crowd singalong towards the ends gives me chills every time.

Crikey, I was AT Glasto 2003 but didn't see them. Was too busy watching SFA as I remember, with Gruff Rhys stirring it up saying how he hated Radiohead. That said, I was at their famous 97 Glastonbury set when it also pissed down and was a mudfest.

  7. Just been watching BBC coverage of Radiohead at Reading headlining on Sunday night.

Astonishing crowd - especially the vast singalaong in the slow bit of Paranoid Android with all hands raised swaying in great waves, many thousands strong. Looked amazing, and a great look on Colin Greenwood's face - shock and awe! Yorke looked like he was in a trance with his robotic dancing and headshaking throughout the set - great knob-twiddling by Jonny Greenwood and Ed O'Brien too. It's on Youtube if you fancy a look, as is most of the set broken down into different songs.

  8. Right, an idea, anyone fancy a VC meetup somewhere in the vicinity of The Forum Nov 4th - there are loads of pubs nearby in Kentish Town?

I have a guest list spare for the gig and anyone making the effort to come over from the US will be getting the ticket.

    Any takers?

  9. yep, a perfect view. I don't usually like going upstairs, but I guessed there wouldn't be that cut-off feeling you get at some venues, and wasn't too sure how the view would be downstairs (unless you're at the barrier...)

I'll be downstairs for the Forum in November ;)

  10. There was more love for them on thursday than on friday. Thursday they also played better Id say personnaly. The Irish have luck with the two amazing concerts, but what a horrible climate they have! :-)

True about the climate, but then again you just stay in the pub all day and down a few barrells of Guinness. No finer place in the world for atmospheric boozers

  11. twas another epic show. i met jeff and john outside their hotel beforehand and we had a laugh about Burt. roll on the second show tonight

Magazine....? Lucky buggers. Sounds like a better set than Troxy - I suspect you'll get a very different show tonight, as it was was second night at Vicar st last time.

Talking of which, glad they remembered the Burt episode! Have a great time tonight - last night of the tour isn't it?

  12. The guy who wrote the piece used to work for Wilco-loving Uncut magazine (was there from the start I believe - I met him once or twice) and before that was at Melody Maker.

I get irritrated by the 40-something men tag, there were many 20 somethings and up and a large female presence too.

I can understand the band 'identity' thing to a degree. Eclectic bands like Wilco are hard to pigeonhole and IMO the wider the swing in styles the more you'll suffer for it (in terms of reaching a wider audience) . Walken for example is far from being alt-rock and a million miles from Spiders or Deeper Down.

  13. Well, one more day to go until Wilco take to Vicar St,Dublin once again, cannae wait.Who else is going? Lets hope a certain "Sportscaster" if he is going doesn't block anyones view ho ho

Well you only had to ask me to move!! was actually taking some pictures that night and the security guy in the photo pit invited me to stay there for the gig which I wasn't gonna decline. Anyway I'm sure you got your own back with the Bacharach gag (cheeky f*****).

Sadly won't be there this time - any more than the twice already this week would probably be overdoing it. But come over to London in November and I'll buy you a beer.

Hope you get as varied a set over the two nights as we got last time.

  14. I think it's weird the way die-hard fans, who go to multiple shows, expects 'their' band to change the set for them, who are probably in the minority. I'd imagine most punters at the shows, haven't seen every show Wilco have played over the last few years, and might not have seen them play Spiders, which is a major highlight of their show (and has changed a little over the years). It's the same with Springsteen fans who complain about him playing Thunder Road (or whatever) most of the time. I, for one, would be dissapointed if these staples were missed out. My wife came last night, she doesn't see them as often as I do, but thought the show was amazing, and thought Spiders was fantastic

Think you might find there's a high percentage of regulars at the London shows. As Tweedy himself has pointed out, Wilco always sell the same amount of records in the UK.

  15. Thats because they are unbelieveable live songs!!! i dont know how the band could get tired of playing them and people could get tired of seeing them!! theyre amazing songs!!!

Don't disagree with that but Spiders for example eats up 10 minutes plus of a two hour set which means two or three others are squeezed out. It's not as if they haven't played this in London every time they've played there. Same goes for the others. I say rotate and let's hear more of the gems that rarely get played.

  16. Here was the complete setlist:

    Wilco (the song)

    IATTBYH

    Company In My Back

    Bull Black Nova

    You Are My Face

    One Wing

    A Shot in the Arm

    Radio Cure

    Handshake Drugs

    Nothing'severgonnastandinmyway(again)

    Deeper Down

    Impossible Germany

    You Never Know

    Jesus, etc.

    Can't Stand It

    Hate It Here

    Walken

I'm The Man Who Loves You

    -------------------------

At Least That's What You Said

    Forget The Flowers

    Heavy Metal Drummer

    Spiders (Kidsmoke)

    I'm A Wheel

    Hoodoo Voodoo

Hummingbird was also on the printed setlist, I believe after Spiders, but Jeff audibled out of it. It seemed like they were gonna run out of time (11 p.m. curfew) after I'm A Wheel, but Jeff got the thumbs up apparently so they went ahead and also did Hoodoo.

The "We Are The Champions" fragment was more of a crowd singalong started by Jeff than anything that the band really played. After his Queen comment, I guess it was sort of apropos as a way to get the crowd going during the usual clapping section. I don't think too many people were participating in the clapping, at least initially.

The rest of the band also had confetti poppers (or whatever those things are) they they deployed during Jeff's birthday "festivities." So the stage was pretty much strewn with streamers and such from that point on, some of which Nels delightfully sprinkled over Jeff amid his one-legged solo during I'm The Man Who Loves You.

Yes, seemed to be a bit of confusion/discussion onstage after Spiders. Looked like they hastily rearranged with the clock ticking down - they squeezed in a quick blast of I'm A Wheel, then thought, f*** it and threw in Hoodoo Voodoo which took them five minutes or so past the curfew.

Shame they didn't come onstage earlier than 9 - then there wouldn't be an issue.

Still no sign of much of the new material. Maybe it'll appear on the autumn tour.

One other suggestion I'd really like to see happen at future Wilco shows. A Tweedy solo section of two or three acoustic songs would break up the show a bit and bring a little light and shade. He's got so much to offer on his own as anyone who's been to one of his solo shows will know.

Sometimes I think the shows are too one-paced and predictable - Handshake Drugs Spiders IATTBYH and ITMWLY always seem to make the sets - I'd prefer to see these rotated in favour of an acoustic section. Would make the Tweedy experience much more rounded (and representative of what he does best).

  17. Yep, there were cakes, two of them (on one plate) candles on both, side by side and in the shape of a nice round pair of you-know-whats or 'something eternal' as Jeff pointed out to the 2,500 rammed in The Troxy. And, of course we then got a hearty 'Happy Birthday' sung by every man jack inside the venue. Terrific stuff.

The cakes were trundled on by Jeff's guitar tech right after they'd played 'Can't Stand It' and before they broke into a joyous 'Hate It Here'.

Quite a few surprises - Radio Cure, Company In My Back, Nothing'sEverGonnaStand....., Can't Stand It, and a visceral ALTWYS to start the encores followed by Forget The Flowers.

Great gig, we even got a rendition of Queen's 'We Are Tha Champions' from band and audience at full volume right in the middle of Spiders after Jeff had wanted everyuone to clap along 'like at a Queen concert..

Started with Wilco The Song and finished with Hoodoo Voodoo/I'm A Wheel. Top stuff. Roll on Forum in November.

  18. I meant the stage looks small... ;)

just called the venue, and Wilco are due on at 8.30, with an 11 o' clock finish...

    that seems long enough.. :)

My source at Nonesuch says Wilco on at 9 - Blitzen Trapper at 8 so sounds like it might be a standard length show.
