  1. Both Nels and Alex Cline will be interviewed on NPR's Weekend Edition Sunday Feb. 15th in the A.M.

that would be tommorrow morning on the Radidio (F.M. not A.M. ) although in the A.M. but not off A.M. . . . who's on first you ask ?

  2. i can't help, but . . .

Mark Shark has his first book out now called the "Tao of Tuning" published by Hall Lenard (i think), he teaches at a music school I work at (i'm a piano player)

It looks pretty good, some of his fellow musicians give it good reviews on the back cover (Jackson Brown, Bonnie Raitt etc.)

I know likes this guy for DADGAD (Whoops that didn't work : edit) just search Pierre Bensusan on youtube

  3. "A Peoples History of the United States" by Howard Zinn, is one of my favourite books. honesty, openmindedness, willingness, thats HOW i would approach this topic . . . i really don't know a ton about the 911 truth movement, i'm just a fan of free speech, so i will continue to keep my mind open . . .

i kinda feel like the bailout stuff might be another way of . . . ah the heck with it, lets all just listen to Britney Spears and bury our heads in the sand

  4. we could use some vibes in the South Bay and Long Beach (so cal), our own Robert Lucas died today at 46. just the nicest guy, a tremendous talent , blues man Robert Lucas will be sorely missed. He served as lead singer for Canned Heat for many and his own group Luke and the Locomotives.

Just him and his steel national dobro could light up a room

    i'm in disbelief . . . praying . . .

  5. Glad you guys had a good jam. On the meeting wizard Sat. morn. is tough for me . . . there is a Sunday afternoon in Baracktober where 5 people are available (including yours truly) . . . I know not everyone can make each day (being left out on this first jam).

So I got the music book and everything . . . such is life

On the flip side, that Sat. church gig has gotten off to a good start. New Orleans gospel singer Chanelle Haynes from Trin-i-tee 5:7 has been helping us, although she'll be out the next few weeks promoting T57 Deluxe Edition. (Trinitee 5 7 does the 18th Divas Simply Singing benefit Sat Oct. 11th at the Wilshire Theater Beverly Hills, {patti labelle, patti austin, angie stone, lalah hathawy, miki howard, siedah garret . . .}since it's in town, she might squeeze sat.church in)

O.K. seriously though, Kidsmoke is about the only one from Via Chicago that I've met. I really like to participate in the So Cal Wilco Jam at some point.

I teach later on Tues. Thu and Fri so any of you can come to that particular music school and play Wilco Tunes, so thats Tues. Thu. or Fri after 8pm in the South Bay. We've got a drum kit 3 acoustic pianos small PA, bass amp. and a few very small guitar pratice amps. The Sun. afternoon time on the meeting wizard is pretty much open for me as well.

I'm a keyboard player and I got more interested in Wilco after Nels joined . . . then SBS came out and I was blown away . . . I went to see Banyan summer of 2007 and afterwrds came back to VC full on, CAUSE I GOT HOOKED,

Nels is an extremely inspiring guitar player, and I feel blessed to have played in a band with him, albeit breifly, in the 90's . . .

p.s. they don't even pass the basket at the sat. church service, it's alot of contemporary music and then of course the spoken message (aka sermon) . . . (oh yeah even Wilco saw Chanelle {with Trin-i-tee 5:7 when they teamed with the Clark sisters during the Aretha Franklin tribute at the Grammys.})

  6. O.K. here's some tangents, I played in a band with the drummer on Thriller, the great Leon "Ndugu" Chancelor, . . . also the teen Idol I backed up (when I was 18) went to high school with with M.J. whats EVEN weirder is Jeff Tweedy mentions their hit song in the Sunken Treasure DVD "Heartbeat It's a Lovebeat" whats even weirder is Tweedy wrote something regarding a book about teen Idols, I'll have to find this again, an interesting read, something about about Justin Timberlake's music relating to young listeners . . .

o.k. pretty lame tangents, now I gotta listen to AOAF again . . .

Of course Ndugu's work with Miles Davis has some nice moments, will look for the myspace French tv link circa 1970 ish

  7. dang, i just saw this. i can barely play anymore. and i've like only learned one tune OTV . . . ,

but i'll just do a cecil taylor imatation during the noise sections and fake the rest . . .

so doesn't nels play at barnsdale art park on labor day, monday sept. 1st for the angel city jazz fest. (w/ becca in tow)

you could just crash his gig, they play outside . . .

seriously, it sounds like fun, i'll try to go to a bunch of 12 step meetings before hand to try and reign in my buttheadedness

oh yeah, did any of us ever buy the music book, i know it's the lazy way . . . i'll try and order it,

  8. Mid Life Crisis . . . good name for a band . . .

oh wait, i play in a band called Mid Life Crisis . . .

just a bar band . . . but damn, the guitar player has been gettin some gig chops . . . Chuck Alvarez has been playing in Lisa Haley's band a while (grammy nominee for Zydeco) Haley did one of the American music series shows in Pasadena this summer (others in the FREE series were Joe Doe, The Blasters etc.)

I think MLCs one August gig was one the best nights I've heard him

me on the other hand, i can't play my way out of a paper bag these days, but i know i musta had one or two good music moments in my pathetic life . . .

maybe it's time to purchase a mid life crisis keyboard and actually spend some time playing the darn thing

  9. I played some gigs with David Hentschel, producer of the first 5 Collins era Genesis albums. I played the guys tunes for two years, but he was in the US rarely. My favourite Genesis story was told by Percy Jones around 96, Hentschel was in town producing Brand X (Manifest Destiny) . . . so Percy's story had to do with Collins (1st) wedding and the jamming during it . . . seems Jon Anderson called "I Shot The Sheriff" and Percy was trying to disappear whilst playing a tune he didn't know . . . and Banks and Rutherford were sitting and waotching going hmmm or something . . .

ok so it loses something in the translation . . . but it was funny the way Percy told it . . . Goodsall was listening to this tale asking Percy . . .where was I? . . .

(the band i was in was Blue Thunder a songwriting project of David Hentschel and Paul Williams (juicy lucy, holdsworth i.o.u. band))

i'll edit in some more trivia later . . .

  10. I recently did some internet searching for my childhood friend, Laurie McClain and this time I found her.

I'm really enjoying her music . . . she's been in Nashville since 97 ? (i think) Lincoln Nebraska b4 that, . . . (we grew up in so. cal.)

Her husband Charlie Chadwick plays in John Jorgenson's quintet . . . Charlie produced her first CD and there's some new stuff coming soon . . .

anyway I got to talk with her for a bit on the phone and compare memories of our early childhood . . . kind of an emotional wow,

her music is positive, folkish, very unique writing . . . just inspiring to me

. . . i surfed around and found some other stuff, like a an upcoming Desert Rose Band reunion with John Jorgenson, Chris Hillman and Herd Pederson, . . . also the world of House Concerts and the folk circuit . . .

    very enlightning

  11. i getta play a gig this Friday night August 15th at Godmothers in San Pedro with the locals. These are San Pedro High friends of guitarist Chuck Alvarez. Playing under the name Mid Life Crisis. There's no cover and we always have fun. i mostly do music education these days so it's rare for me to play out.

i've done this gig 3 times in the last year but never metioned it here till now.

it's just bar band rock and roll, but we do a couple of Chuck Alvarez tunes. His main gig lately has been with zydeco violinist Lisa Haley. They got a grammy nomination, and were part of that FREE thurs. americana series in Pasadena this summer which also included the Blasters and John Doe.

(edit: um, John Doe plays Thursday August 21st at the Levitt Pavillion American Music Night, and it's, um, like FREE, i think)

So just in case there may be 1 person on Via Chicago that saw a Boilermaker gig in the 90's, i figured i'd post . . .

  12. Thanx for the post $3.83,

    That was a pleasure to read . . .

Nels had surf guitarist Dick Dale on his phone machine message in 93 . . .

. . . when I saw Scarnella this year it was 10 days b4 the residency shows and, as you pointed out, he was recovering from an arm injury so he performed by just using effects with Carla's guitar & voice as the source . . . amazing that he can be so creative without even playing his instrument . . .

our local straight ahead jazz station used to play a cut off "Silencer" it was the Gil Evans piece.

    keep writing :thumbup

  13. from "Classic Jazz Guitar"

    Jimmy Wyble

Jimmy Wyble (1922) was playing western swing music in 1942 with guitarist Cameron Hill when Bob Wills hired both of them for his Texas Playboys. Wills called their sound "twin guitars". The results of this unique paring can be heard on Wills' Roly Poly.

Wyble continued his association with western swing bands well into the 1950's when he released his first jazz album as leader, The Jimmy Wyble Quintet (1953). This recording had the unusual instrumentation of accordion, clarinet, guitar, bass and drums. That same year he recorded four sides with the Barney Kessel Quartet which are on the Swing Guitars album.

During the late 1950's and early 1960's he toured with Benny Goodman and recorded with Red Norvo. His association with Red Norvo produced two outstanding albums of straight ahead jazz: Naturallyand HiFive.

In 1977 Jimmy Wyble made another album with unusual instrumentation: Jimmy Wyble & Love Bros.

Jimmy Wyble enjoyed a long association with the studios in Los Angeles and he was also a member of Tony Rizzi's Five Guitars.

  14. Jimmy Wyble plays today at 4 pm pacific time in San Pedro. Wyble, in a duo with Rick Zunigar at Alva's 1417 W. 8th st.

Jimmy Wyble, born in 1922, was in Bob Wills group in the 40's.

    Just a wonderfull guitarist.
