  1. LOVED this song when I was a kid...

how 'bout "heartbeat (it's a love beat)" by the deFranco Family?

Ah yes, this song is mentioned in the Sunken Treasure DVD . . .

And, I played in this group as a teenager end of 77, 78 and beyond . . .

Tony Defranco was twelve when they recorded the first record . . .

(he's 5 months younger than me)

The "wrecking crew" played on this - Larry Carlton, Hal Blaine, Max Bennet . . . it used harpsichord . .

  2. Here's a take on Obama's pastor from a local (weekly) paper, courtesy of our resident muckraker:

    http://www.nuvo.net/articles/wright_is_right/

. . . i voted Obama in the CA primary and will vote for him again in Nov. 08 . . . interesting DUI stats in that article, Roger Clinton lived on my street ;) . . .

I would suggest Howard Zinns "A People's History of The United States". Even Professors at the community college use that book as a text.

  3. Critical discourse is just fine. But to me the title of this thread is mean spirited. Maybe something like Wilco guitarists then and now, or just some way of raising the musical issues you have with Wilco or Nels without being so hurtful in the thread title.

when this thread first got to me I started a thread "Boo Hiss to Boo Hissing" to which some VCer's took offense at . . .

when this thread starting reappearing now and again, I went back and figured out how to CLOSE my own thread . . .

I would suggest that if the spirit moves you, or gratitude for Wilco residency shows, this threads author or a moderator or administrator could close this thread.

I know I'm not the only one who feels this way.

To see this come back again, have someone borrowing the title for a PINNED sticky on another area of VC . . .

I'm sure it'll probably 'keep coming back' (pun intended) as a running joke . . . I'm over it, but I'm not laughing.

Nels Cline is a friend of mine. I don't know him super well. I mostly knew him 92' 93' 94' 95'. The Nels Cline Trio of 93 was my favorite band of that year. I was fortunate to play to play in a band with him around that time, only 6 or 7 gigs over a couple years but enough to know him as a musician.

(I got clean and sober in 95 and stayed close to home for a bit, so I don't run into NC much anymore cept to say hello at an LA club gig.)

One more thing to consider when pinning for the Wilco of days gone by. . . There are many relationships in life. When someone gets clean. Sometimes their old friends miss the part of them that used to "party" . . . I think that there may be some of that going on with the relationship of JT and some of the fan base. Obviously in kicking the pain killer addiction there are changes, these are necessary to stay alive. . . Wilco has completely embraced there past now (with the residency). In recovery, it's said that our past is our greatest asset. Because with it we can help someone get through a similar difficult situation.

I for one am grateful for the changes in the music, this allowed to connect at a deeper level. And with that connection explore the back catolog in a new light . . .

    just my $ .02

  4. You took lessons from Moraz? :blink That's cool as hell. He was ex-Yes by the time I first saw Yes ('78) but I did get to see him and Bruford in a club here around '84-'85. "Music for Piano and Drums" / "Flags" period.

i use to be able to play, (but now I friggin suck), back then he gave me three lessons and said that's all you need . . . we became good friends . . . I ended up with his grand piano for 3 years till Young Chang came and got it in 96 . . . we're on one recording together, a John Cage tribute C.D. "A Chance Operation" ours is the 2nd track (after the Kronos Quartet) . . . Zappa did "4 33", Oregon, Yoko Ono, Laurie Anderson. Meridith Monk lots of others also on that Cage tribute C.D.

see. I'm such a Dick, my parents almost named Richard cept the Nixon was v.p. in 59'

there is hope, Nels joined Wilco at 49 (i think) but he was never a name dropping loser (like me), oh yeah, and he can play . . . ;-)

. . . ah grasshopper, when you can pull your head out of your ass, it will be time for you to record . . .

  5. Hey Happy Birthday man! :cheers Haven't we discussed prog on the board before? I'm getting a little forgetful in my old age (45). :stunned

I will listen to "The Gates of Delirium" in your honor tonight. :thumbup

Ah yes "The Gates of Delirium" from the "Yes" album "Relayer"

Dang, today is Jean Ristori's birthday as well. Jean Ristori, engineer, musician, the best friend of Patrick Moraz. That was quite a co-inky-dink when Moraz told me that . . .

March 9th was also the first time I took a lesson from him (Moraz) in 1993. Turnaround opened for Brand X later that month.

    but I digress . . .

    "Yes" L.B.C 1975 - a very good nite

  6. Thats right. Today is the birthday of Barbie. The Matel toy introduced in 1959.

And she and I are the exact same age. Usually on the big ones, 30, 40 and the like Barbie will be on the front page of the newspaper or something.

Seeing as this is my first real year hanging out on VC. I figured I throw out an insanely stupid fact to cut myself down to size. Many here consider me to be an obnoxious loser, which is a pretty fair assement.

So here's to starting mid life crushed to nothingness and attempting to live right on the flip side . . .

oh yeah, I've been playing some gig's in Pedro with a band called "Mid Life Crisis", should I just not even bother to post an occasional show? Usually people get annoyed at spammers here . . .

I still love it here so keep those insults comming . . . I still aspire to be a human being someday and maybe just maybe something might register . . .

  7. No worries, back in the nineties us new music types had a band with the most infamous exploding drummer from "Spinal Tap" Mick Schrempton. Of course this band also included one Nels Cline. Now Mick Schrempton (AKA Ric Parnell) solved his delemma by coming back to tour with Spinal Tap as his twin brother RICK Schrempton.

Now seeing that Nels is the only member of Wilco with a twin brother. I predict that they will choose not to explode.

Just to be safe though, I might send the former editor of the Harvard Law review some bread on Monday :-)

  8. So "One True Vine" has never been performed live by Wilco ? Only in the recording/rehearsing/writing process ? . . .

    . . . anyway, pretty moving youtube stuff from these shows . . . thankyou Wilco . . . thanks for posting vids vc'ers . . .

I've played OTV once in public, at our local artistic sharing "recovery" meeting . . .

    I love that tune . . .

  9. Saw Rocco Deluca last night, definitely worth the $13.50 . . . nice grooves . . .

    amplified-dobro-bottle-neck never sounded so good

it was kinda another reunion night for our old neighborhood Torrance crew

(and I'm tired, in a good way)

Daniel Lanois has been producing the newest stuff, so i thought he might sit in, and sure enough he came on for the last tune.

(I'll try and give a real account after some much needed rest . . .)

  10. I ended up going . . . I always enjoy a show when Nels participates, he just one of my favorite people . . .

it was pretty much improve, Carla had some soulful moments . . . the most interesting point for vc'ers is Nels never picked up a guitar, he played effects for their two improves, Carla's voice and guitar going through a myriad of pedals and effects mostly tweaked by Nels . . .

There were 5 acts on the bill, Carla played 3rd (i think)

I would gladly go see any group Ms. Bozulich performs with . . .

i'm gonna try and not be such a jerk during lent so that's all i got for now

  11. Holy Cross ended Lehigh's four game winning streak today. But Last Year it went into overtime.

Still, it's fun to see my cousin's son play college ball. Dang he was the youngest, growin up at family functions the other kids would show him no mercy . . . (none of his cousins pick on him now) . . .

    Four weeks till March . . .

  12. I was at the last 2 Wilco Ensemble living room shows but not this most recent one. I figured it was time to let some of the new ensemble members get the chance, so I joined several other ensemble "old-timers" who gave up their spots to make room for the newbies. (There's a limit of 30 people for these things.) And yes, while I feel it was the right thing to do, it was a painful decision. :heartbroken

Anyway, we have a professional AV guy in our group, an independent film maker, and a sound technician so we're lucky to have a great record of the events, edited beautifully and everything.

But sorry, no can share. Everybody has been really good about not letting the videos leak out. We promised Jeff, and we don't want to be jerks.

We can share photos. And maybe the audio. (Passenger, is the audio going to be shared?)

However, there might be a way. I'd say your best chance of seeing these videos is to follow these steps:

    1. Learn to play an instrument (if you don't already play one. )

    2. Move to Chicago

    3. Sign up for the Wilco ensemble at the Old Town School of Folk Music

    4. Buy beers for the long time members of the group

    5. Go out for beers with the group after class.

    6. Sign up for another (8 week) session (You must prove your dedication by showing up for more than one session before the old timers will accept you as one of the clan.)

    7. Buy more beers for the old timers

    8. Go out for more beers with the crew after class and get to know people

    9. Ask about the living room show, and someone will most likely invite you over to see the DVD. Most of us have forced all of our friends to watch the stuff from previous years over and over and over. . . .

Actually, even if you don't care about the seeing DVD, I'd recommend following these steps!

Hmmmmm, perhaps there is a reason that the other Old Town School groups like the Grateful Dead Ensemble call the Wilco Ensemble the Wil-Cult. . . .

Of course, we call them "those dirty hippies."

(Kidding of course. I love those dirty hippies. :D )

So 4 out of the 9 steps involve beer. Can you like buy the beers but not actually drink one yerself. Or maybe buy real beers for the "oldtimers" and drink root beer yerself . . . I mean, I could probably drink a non-alcoholic beer cept they're for non-alcoholics . . . maybe you could grandfather a clause for wharf rats . . .

i mean, shit, we got 12 steps and only the first half of the first step involves alcohol . . .

  13. I recently subscribed to a yahoo college sports service to watch my cousins son play basketball. I'm pretty oblivious and wondered if someone could tell me which teams I should watch play in the Patriot League.

I can go back and watch most games online. My cousin's son plays for Lehigh. I've been trying to learn a little about. I guess Lehigh made a NCAA playoffs a few years ago.

They're 7-6 (or so) going into league play this week.
