Los Angeles, CA, August 14, 2007 - The end of summer is picking up speed and our audiences (contrary to popular wisdom about vacations) are waxing rather than waning. We have some great musicians on Friday evening and then on Saturday afternoon, we are proud to be the venue to host the Rod Poole Memorial Concert. Rod Poole http://www.rodpoolemusic.com, a genius guitarist, graced our gallery as an audience member of our New Music series hours before his tragic death. He left an indelible stamp on our memories and a hole of loss in our lives. Many of Los Angeles' finest musicians, organized by Rod's mentor Kraig Grady, are turning out to play tribute to him. The memorial concert is free.

(Acoustic Guitar Trio: Rod Poole (L), NC, Jim McCauley ®)

"It is with great sadness and deep shock that I sit here in my hotel room in New York pondering the senseless murder of one of my favorite artists of all time, Rod Poole. I formed a microtonal improvising trio with the guitarists Rod, Jim McCauley, and myself called Acoustic Guitar Trio. One of my motivations for this was to just get closer to Rod and his art, to the haunting beauty of his music. What with my constant road work and divergent personal realm, Rod and I had been in touch less and less frequently, which really felt bad. Rod was a true artist, probably a genius. He had an amazing capacity as both music fan and autodidact musician visionary. He was stubborn, thorny at times, but always because of his intense feelings and ideas concerning creative expression, especially that of the sound world. His death was pointless, and from reports, horribly violent. I feel sick. We are a disaster as a society. I can't stop thinking about him and his wife Lisa. What a nightmare... And it hasn't even really fully sunk in that I will never again see this man, never play music with him again, never hear him play, sit in his Hollywood apartment listening to music, drinking fine beers, thumbing through his recent eBay acquisitions of Sun Ra, Hendrix bootlegs...never again play music with him. His solo CDs "The Death Adder" and "December 96", both out-of-print (WIN Records) are shining examples of artistic vision and depth, his just-intonated Martin acoustics spinning beguiling arpeggios resonating with majestic/intimate sonorous beauty. All possible love to you, Rod. I thought I was speechless, but here are the words, and here come the tears..

Here is a sample of some of the music we made together as Acoustic Guitar Trio.

Rod Poole is arguably one of the most under-documented masters of our time. Not that there weren't any recordings made. Rod had recorded a lot of material that has not seen the light of day. His last CD ("Mind's Island"), a beautiful series of duets with vocalist Sasha Bogdanowitsch could easily have been followed by many great solo recordings that he was waiting to do the right way - either with the nicest label, on the best vinyl, etc. I do know that Acoustic Guitar Trio has tons of stuff "in the can", not the least of which is a 'live' recording from the Downtown Playhouse we called VIGNES, plus some studio recordings done at Scott Fraser's place, plus lots more 'live' stuff thanks to the fact that Rod recorded everything. Further illumination of this brilliant individual may be possible. Time will tell."

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------

(O.K. sorry bout the urls moderaters, I didn't think these fell under the spirit of the no links to comercial releases. I think these are mostly independent.)

(I have nothing to do with this event, I'm just one of the 2,000 new music fan's in L.A. that are on a particular e-mail list.)

  3. I don't have the recording, but I am a piano player. I'm o.k. with chords and taking stuff off the record so if anyone could tell me how to legally buy the bonus tracks I'd be happy to transcribed that tune (One True Vine). I did get TTIG off Raspsody for a big 89 cents. I have bought SBS twice now, once for the CD and once again after learning there was a DVD/CD version. I've purchased most of the other albums in the last few years wanting to get familar with the music after Nels joined. Still haven't got Mermaid 1 n 2.

So anyway, I'm a legit musician but just not great with tech computer stuff. I'll be at the Greek Theatre L.A. show in a couple off weeks . . .

SBS is an extremely moving album. I had no idea it was gonna effect me the way it did. So thats why I came around VC again.

Right, so I'll look around online for a legal version . . .

So I opened my big mouth b4 and realize how stupid it must of sounded to speak of bands of the past (pre Wilco). I don't sell anything or play out as much these days. I been doing more music education. I've been touched by the music so thats why I've been hangin out . . . one day I'll take my foot out of my mouth . . .

The 3rd of Sept. will be 12 years, God willing . . .

    One True Vine

Thanks for the honesty Mr. Tweedy

  4. I would just like to go on the record as saying that canceling a show because of the CHICKEN POX is so rock and roll. :worship

    Spinal Tap lives. :D

    Ian

Nels WAS in a band with Spinal Tap drummer Ric Parnel (aka Mick Schrempton who exploded and came back as his twin brother Rick Schrempton). . . at the recording session it was like "we're doing a tape with the Spinal Tap guy" . . . later, at a gig where Nels played extroidanairily well (pretty much every one) Ric Parnel turns to me and says " Oh, I get it we're in a band with him" [Nels](who really does have a twin brother)

Nels, please take all the rest you need . . .

You credit part of you [ability/sucess] to never turning down a gig . . . well, me thinks you've paid your dues brotherman,

"You got to take it easy man"

Seriously, get well soon, you are much loved . . .

  5. Kieth Jarret has been my fav. for 30 years, I finally saw some of Miles at Ilse of White(sp) w/Jarret, Jack Dejonette, Chick Corea, Aairto(sp) and a sax player I didn't recognized . . .

In 1993 my favourite group was the Nels Cline Trio . . .

I'm glad Cecil Taylor took it out, when I heard that stuff it broke down all the walls

I love Sarah Vaugn(sp) . . . I use to go see Diane Reeves quite a bit back in the day, shes my favourite living singer . . .

the Allan Holdsworth IOU Band was pretty groundbreaking circa 1980-85, he's still got it, it's just that I was floored around 80-81 by those guys . . . I got to work with the singer from that band, Paul Williams [the English Paul Williams]

96-98 in a blues type group ala Juicy Lucy . . . I still kick myself for letting other mu$ic take priority . . .

Trane, Monk . . . Weather Report, RTF,

I was a prog teenager so in my 30's when Patrick Moraz starting teaching in my area I finally got the courage to call him and we became fast friends, man I'll have to get to that another time, cept to say he could nail some of those Kieth Jarret ostanatos . . . we went to see McCoy Tyner once, PM was loving life . . .

I was getting to do some gigs to do some gigs with Nels in Boilermaker, opening for good people with my own fusion group . . . a great time . . . but I digress

    . . . dang life shows up . . .

  6. O.K. I'm gonna skip the poll, and just say I've done em all except heroin. But more importantly, they all stopped working at some point. I've been clean and sober for 11 years and 11 months. Part of why SBS is such a moving album to me is that JT was clean while recording it (i think, correct me if i'm wrong).

Most people don't have a problem with social drinking or smoking a joint at a concert. But me, i ended up crashing cars spending a night or two in jail, passing out on stage . . . etc. etc. etc.

There is always help out there . . .

  7. I haven't seen Zappa Plays Zappa. But I've heard good things about it. I saw the drummer, Joe Travers, play this summer with Zappa Alum Mike Keneally. It was just phenomenal. Joe was going ZPZ rehearesals that week and just smokin on the Keneally gigs as well. He and MK did the Black Page. (I posted bout it in this forum.) It was in San Pedro and Doug Lunn was playing bass so I had to go. It was 20 bucks but well worth it. Keneally didn't even rehearse with Doug since they have a history.

I think Dweezil really is taking this ZPZ seriously, woodshedding his dads stuff, rehearsing the band . . . a Zappa freak friend saw a previous version of ZPZ and was just raving . . . I think you'll get a real show. And it's nice to have a Zappa in a band playing Zappa.

I only saw Frank 2 times, once at Santa Monica Civic w/ Vai, Wackerman, Mars, Ed Mann etc. and once at the Forum, Joes Garage.

I did see "Banned From Utopia" post Frank. That was awsume

And the Grandmothers at the Lighthouse w/ Chester Tompson (Genesis) and the Fowler Bros. (Tom, Bruce and Walt), Mike Miller . . . that mighta been around 1980 . . . So there have been alumni bands playing Zappa even during much of his own carreer.

I not quite sure why you woudn't want Dweezil to "inject his style" I'm pretty sure he's doing alot note for note, but the Zappa tradition has always included improvisation.

When I saw Banned From Utopia it's was during the whole Bill Clinton/ Monica thing. For the 2nd set they had the Blue Dress complete with "stain" the bouree(sp), the cigar . . . the went into a complete improvised bit, congressional testimony, just hilarious

I would check out the official website and learn about the current lineup Dweezil is using . . . and judge for yourself . . .

I personally have never been disapointed at a real Frank Zappa concert or an Alumni band playing a club

  9. This was nice. Interesting setting: under a bridge over the LA river with trains going back and forth behind them. nels was good, just what I expected: avant garde noise that sounded cool/beautiful. There was another girl playing guitar with him.

There was a giant harp that got played for the act after Nels along with a multimedia presentations. That was pretty fun too.

The Edge from U2 was there (just watching), which was random. We were standing around listening to the music and all of a sudden this guy in a beanie is standing next to us and it was him. meh.

A few cars with gardens inside of them and little art exhibits and plants everywhere.

Thanks for the heads up on this!

Your welcome. I figured Nels would have some gigs in during the tour break I had checked his web site earlier this week but it was to soon after europe. I forget to check again till Friday.

Thank YOU for posting about the event. I didn't make but wanted to . . .

I remember going to New Music Mondays at the Alligator in the mid 90's all the time to see the Nels Cline Trio . . . One night Andy Summers from the Police sat down next to me at the bar . . .

The gigs back east are violinist Jenny Scheinman's. Nels, Jenny, and Todd Sickafoose are also in drummer Scott Amendola's band.

Jenny Scheinman also plays in Norah Jones group. After checking out her web site now it makes sense Norah Jones sitting in with the Scott Amendola band a couple years ago (in NY)

    (. . . can't wait for the Wilco Greek Theatre LA 8/29 . . .)

  10. Check out some Wu Shu for some cool drunken forms. Drunken Monkey is always a favourite. Seriously, I saw the Bejing Wu Shu Team in the 80's. The awsome Tai Chi and drunken forms were my favourites. Plus the spectactcular Kung Fu and weapons forms.

O.K. the PBS thing might start in some East Coast Cities as early as tonight, but I saw mostly next week listed when googling. It's called "Spiral Fitness With David Carradine and Rob Moses" I saw some listings for Detroit, Colarado, Alabama, Wisconson . . . and southern California . . . probably more, I don't know who else picked it up.

Rob's youtube clips are improv Kung Fu jams with music from Allan Holdsworth. He came up through classical Kung Fu, but this is all new stuff, new systems.

  11. So Nels plays in Woodstock on 8/4, 3 days before you guys have your summit. Where's Colony Cafe ?

    . . . figured I'd check the date when I saw Woodstock NY on his web site . . . probably j j jazz or something . . . "Jazz isn't dead, it just smells funny"----Frank Zappa

    ---chuck t. (in southern california)

  12. There are some shows listed on nels website starting Sat. 7/28 in Los Angeles 7:30pm at Farmlab. 1745 N. Spring St. unit #4 (323)226-1158, free show I think, lots of folks on the bill:

Accidently on Purpose: The Camels Back

"This evening of music dance features performers such as Nels Cline, Oguri, Robert Scott, Jesske Hume and Yuval Ron's installation and performanceof a giant harp . . .

These guys at Farmlab bought 110 displaced trees after the eviction of the South Central Farmers, and moved them to the Huntington Library and Botanic Garden . . .

(I think those images of Darryll Hanna and Julia Butterfly Hill tree sitting at the South Central Farm probably made the National news a while back. Joan Baez singing . . .)

and on the east coast --- Jenny Scheinman, Nels Cline, Todd Sickafoose, Jim Black ---

    8/02 Brooklynn, NY

    8/04 Woodstock, NY

    8/05 Newmarket, NH

    8/06 NYC

    8/07 Philadelphia, PA

    8/08 Cambridge, MA

The "venues" are on nels website

  13. So there was this movie . . . "Bound For Glory" about the life of Woody Guthrie. Anyway, David Caridine played Woody , , , so now that we can link to Wilco . . .

That schtuff, Shaolin Kung Fu, referenced in the old Kung Fu series, incorparated a whole lotta styles. Mr Rain metioned Tai Chi which can used for health your whole life. There's a million people in China practicing Tai Chi every morning all ages.

There was a school here in so cal in the 70's and 80's Nothern Shaolin/Tai Chi Praying Mantis that taught some pretty creative stuff. Very effective and also very beautifull.

There a Kung Fu guy from my hometown who trained at Tai Mantis, Rob Moses. I think he has a PBS special next month.

Rob has been Caridine's training partner for over 20 years, went to China with him for "Kill Bill", got to visit the Shaolin Temple and everything.

O.K. this overly long, but I've wanted to metion "Bound For Glory" in VC. Seemed like the time.

Yeah, I know, Bruce Lee was suposed to have done the original Kung Fu TV series, and . . . life is what it is. Hope you find a style that suits your needs.

  14. Yeah the 18th it is. So I'm thinkin "God" will come and talk to lil Bush in the backyard pet cemetary area, ya see seems lil george can't keep his pet's alive for very long and the gravesite cross's keep increasing . . . anybody see any parrallels ?

Anyway George sr. and Barbara have already talked to lil Bush out back during/or after a burial and brought up the God thing (seems he only talks to republicans)

So whats "God" gonna say? . . . any ideas ?

  15. I saw the one where lil bush and lil tony blair are cheerleaders, anyway, the co-inky-dink is the soundtrack music writers went into Toni Basils "Oh Mickey Your so Fine" . . . so the band on the original Toni Basil record, Zoo Drive, included Doug Lunn, Ric Parnel and John Goodsall . . .

(Doug Lunn, Ric Parnel, Nels Cline, Walter Zooi, myself and others did some gigs as Boilermaker in the 90's)

So anyway, 25 years after Toni Basil invaded our collective physche with one of the first music videos, the song is still part of pop culture.

More VW comercials - more u.s rep. calling for impeachment - more political cartoons

i'm addicted to more, more, more

impossble germany guitar solo - less is more

  16. Yikes, that was some scarry stuff. Mike Keneally Band played in San Pedro last night at Rosalie and Alvas performance space. I'd been meaning to see a show at Alvas for a while and this one I just couldn't pass up. Zappa alum, Keneally was playin his friggin ass off . . . you could tell he dug the unique atmosphere at Alvas (it was his first gig at this space). It holds about 60 people very comfortable and the band had as much room as the wanted to set up. I'd seen him once before with Beer For Dplphins opening for Gong at Luna Park in the 90's. But I didn't realize what a quick mind and original style of giutar playing he has.

O.K. so I'm not really that familar with his music, but I have the "Hat" recording stashed somewhere (i bought it at a 90's progfest cause Doug was on it) The played alot from this record and older stuff, there was lots of improve moving freely from jam to real tune at will, blowing minds when Keneally and Joe Travers (from Zappa Plays Zappa [i think]) went into the Black Page.

alright . . . so yeah I'm still a newbie here on VC, and I'm a "Major Nobody" as a musician, but I was lucky enough to play in Walter Zooi's band "Boilermaker" with Doug Lunn, Nels Cline, and Ric Parnel (aka Mick Schrempton from Spinal Tap) back in the 90's. So it was fun to catch up with people . . .

There were loads of tapers at this show. I not familar with that scene but I guess you could find it if wanted to hear it.

    And it was video taped.

The creative energy was really high last night. The band was really havin fun . . . Keneally also sang great, payed some nice keyboards . . . they did an encore after a heartfelt ovation . . . and since Alvas has an wonderfully redone Steinway grand, Keneally also did a McCartney tune on acoutic piano with just drums . . . the one that starts "Martha My Dear . . . "

(is that the name of it?)

alright, I'm a verbal midget so I'll [try to]stop here . . . it was definitely worth the bread to see these guys, highly recomended.

  17. I got this in my mailbox today. I thought it was relavant to this thread. Please forgive me if it's outa place, still kinda new here.
