  1. Freakin' A. This is tough. Ok here goes:

    Jimi Hendrix

    The Clash

    Wilco

    Neil Young

    Gillian Welch

    Sublime

    Sufjan Stevens

    Rev. Gary Davis

    Ryan Adams/Whiskytown

    Stereolab

    Bob Dylan

    Tripping Daisy

    Skip James

    Bob Marley

    Nick Drake

    Grateful Dead

    Bruce Springsteen

    The Velvet Underground

    The Strokes (really)

    Iron & Wine

That's with no hip hop, jazz or electronic music represented at all :realmad ... also light on the country which is a damn shame. I want 20 picks for each genre ... need room for John Hartford, Willie Nelson, Norman Blake, The Stanley Brothers, Johnny Cash, etc.

  2. Yeah - the only one of the albums I listed that I still listen to with any regularity is Time (The Revelator). I'm beginning to wonder if it will ever get old. So far no dice.

Still, I do enjoy the others and listen to them on occasion. YHFT quite a bit, NGDB almost never.

  3. Jimi Hendrix: Electric Ladyland

listened to this for the first time in 5th grade ... wasn't even into rock and roll yet but within a couple of weeks was listening to The Beatles, The Doors, Cream, CSN and Santanta

    The Black Crowes: Amorica

totally blew my mind in '95 and didn't leave my CD player for a loooong time ... I had been playing guitar for three or four years and this album made me realize there was life outside of standard tuning

The Pharcyde: Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde

man, talk about a whole new can of worms! this album never gets enouth cred ... got me into ATCQ, Jungle Brothers, Beastie Boys, De La Soul, etc.

Tripping Daisy: Jesus Hits Like The Atom Bomb

I thought this album was completely visionary when I heard it (still do) and it made me pay attention to indie rock in general

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band: Will The Circle Be Unbroken

reintroduced me to non-pop country music after a long hiatus ... whew, I have come a long way in my appreciation of bluegrass/old time since then

    Wilco: Yankee Hotel Foxtrot

of course ... this album is the reason I listen to Wilco at all (although I now listen to the entire catalog) ... nuff said

    Gillian Welch: Time (The Revelator)

holy frikin' hell this is a good record and I will never get it out of my skull

  4. Will has been around the TX live music scene for a looong time. Before Centro-Matic he played drums in the Dallas band Funland. Those guys were awesome to watch although I think everyone would agree that Will's talents are best used as a songwriter - he is just too prolific and kick ass. I also saw him play a few shows circa '95 with just a telecaster and a little 8" tube amp turned up as loud as possible (i.e. no backing band). It was a trip (in a good way).

FWIW I like the older stuff a lot. "Tied To The Trailer" and "Post-It Notes From The State Hospital" will always be classics to me. I still listen to Redo The Stacks as much as the newer records.

  5. I'm fine with giving my 1-year-old cheap but "real" musical instruments. She has been banging on guitars tuned to an open chord since she was able to sit up unassisted. You can find beginner stuff that stays in tune and is still inexpensive. I found a Rogue brand uke for about $35 in a Musician's Friend catalog. If she tears it up no big deal.

  6. Can I get a witness or something like that?

    AMEN!!!

    :worship

Seriously, how many people can play over 20 instruments fluently and write melodies for song after song like it's going out of style? And that's not even mentioning his guitar playing. I mean ... gimme a break ... totally awesome.

  7. My experience w/ getting interviews for college newspapers was mixed. I did talk to a few bands who were fairly well known but most were also based in TX (like me). I don't know if you will get a reply but give it a shot & contact mgmt - it won't hurt anything. You never know.

  8. "I've Just Seen a Face" is the best Beatles song.

I dunno - can I vote for side 2 of Abbey Road? That counts as one song, right?

Does the entire album Revolver count as one song? They are all equally kick ass ...
