  1. It was tough to choose between this round-up of (mainly) rare/obscure releases and remixes, or their 'Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space' CD.

Ladies and Gentlemen is an awesome record but I didn't realize it was obscure (didn't it win NME Album of the Year?) - I guess because all my friends loved it when it came out. The title track is the most gorgeous reworking of Pachelbel's Canon in D that I have ever heard.

  2. Daivd Crosby- If I could Only Rember My Name

I thought I was the only person in existence that still had a copy of that album! It's a good one.

John the Wolfking of L.A. is a great one, too

I would vote for Simpatico by the Vandermark 5 or maybe Earl Harvin Trio At the Gypsy Tea Room - both of those blew my mind when I heard them.

  3. Started Harry Potter 6 and wasn't feeling in the Harry Potter mood so I went with Roth.

I've been "reading" Harry Potter 7 for more than a month. Since I started it, I've already finished two other books.

If you are at all interested in lutherie, check out Clapton's Guitar by Allen St. John. I think his usual gig is with The Village Voice and mostly sports related, but this particular book is a great, easy read. One review mentioned it was "a book about guitars in the sense that The Orchid Thief is a book about gardening" - I can't think of a better description.

  4. i was told the noise curfew was later on the weekends. i've definitely been at shows at stubb's on a saturday that went well past 11. probably close to 1.

Yeah - when did the weekend curfew start? I've been at Stubb's watching shows as late as 2am on Sunday morning ... Galactic and the Roots come to mind.

  5. Jimmy Jimmy!: thanks for the advice on shielding -- I hadn't thought about it, but it's a great idea and the perfect time to do it.

Rileykill: do you know of any online retailers who sell Van Zandts? I was thinking of putting in Texas specials, but I'm intrigued by the Van Zandts.

These guys carry them - saw some in their shop last week:

Decent selection of effects and amps, too.

  6. My USA Strat of 10+ years is pretty heavily modded. It is one of the best sounding Strats I have ever played - I think you can do waaay better than the stock pickups.

My suggestion is a set of Van Zandts. They work wonders for Strats and Teles. Mine were hand wound by W.L. before his death. Great, great Texas pickups.

One of the advantages of standard Strats/Teles IMO is that you can mod them without feeling too bad about it. Here in Austin, most of the shops won't even take one in trade because there are simply too many around. I'd take a Fender that has lived through a few well planned surgeries over one off-the-rack any day of the week.

  7. Lap steel sounds good. Ever since I heard the version of "It Ain't Me Babe," from Dylan's Rolling Thunder Revue CD, I've really envied good lap steel playing.

Lap steel is cool - I can get around alright on one (nothing to write home about). It's an easy transition from guitar. In fact, if you play in open tunings it's hardly a transition at all ...

But for my $$ I'd choose mandolin. I'm an acoustic die-hard at heart, which is the reason I'd favor mando, banjo or dobro over the electric steel. Mando just happens to be the sound that really ignites my imagination. It's like a snare drum with strings! I love the sound.

Let us know which one you pick!

  8. Of course, what the hell do I know about hip hop, I'm a white/peurto rican who lives in a gated community in Pembroke Pines, Florida.

My top 5 hip hops albums:

    1. Nas- Illmatic

    2. Beastie Boys- Paul's Boutique (Every damn song is a classic)

after that, it gets really cloudy, but I get the feeling the Grey Album by Danger Mouse might be on there, so, again, what the hell do I know?

Well, you named three of the good ones.

  9. that said, a lot of the more indie underground stuff bubbling up out there has given me hope...People Under the Stairs, Doom, Diverse, Lyrics Born, Ohmega Watts, Giant Panda and even Ugly Duckling have dropped some pretty cool shit in the recent years. throw in the Roots and you've got an argument real hip hop isn't dead, it's just waiting for the current repetitive dreck taking centerstage to fall out of favor w/ the MTV set.

    Exactly ...
