  1. Would you or anyone care to rank the top 5 (or whatever) albums for a newbie? He's been around awhile and I'd love to hear what you all consider his best.

my favorites are Ten Years After, Based on Happy Times, Places that Are Gone, Isolation Party, Crashing the Ether, In the Light Bright (the new one), Songs from the Film and The Merry-go-Round Broke Down

    all brilliant

  2. Tommy is an all-time great.

As brilliant as he is as a songwriter, he's just as good a guitar player.

    And a great singer.

    And just phenomenal live.

If you like edgy, crunchy melodic guitar pop jammed with hooks, check out Tommy.

    All-time top-10 artist for me.

  3. You are so right. I have been listening to FACE non stop since I bought it a few weeks ago. It's up there with the best Guided by voices stuff.

interesting and very cool to hear this

usually seems to take people more than a few weeks to really grasp FaCE ... it's such a dense record

but i agree ... as good as GBV's best

    a phenomenal record

  4. Paul Westerberg - Stereo/Mono

Robert Pollard - From a Compound Eye

Ryan Adams - Heartbreaker, Cold Roses

The Shins - Oh Inverted World

Songs: Ohia - Magnolia Electric Co.

The Strokes - Is this it

    The Wrens - Meadowlands

all would probably make my list too, brian

From a Compound Eye might be at the top of the list (although Half Smiles would be way up there too)

FaCE is by far bob's best post-gbv record

  5. i was in London and read a review in Melody Maker of the new Mock Turtles record (the one with Can you Dig it). I had never heard of them, but it sounded right up my alley -- melodic guitar pop with tons of harmonies and hooks, etc.

So i walked over to the HMV store and grabbed a copy.

As I was waiting in line, I heard another band that sounded great -- very hooky, lots of guitars, great melodies. Got to the front of the line and asked the dude what it was.

    "That's the new Mock Turtles."

    I still love that record

  6. so isn't the top five prog bands, yes, genesis, floyd, elp, kc...?

    for me, it's 1) Genesis, 2) Yes, 3) ELP, 4) Starcastle, 5) Nektar

but i don't expect many people here to agree with me :)

wish i could get into kc. theyve made some interesting music in the 90s and 00s, but again, bad bad production.

other than the very early stuff - court of the crimson king, starless, red - just not interested in king crimson. their later stuff does nothing for me

  7. I was raised on this stuff.

Saw Yes about 20 times, Genesis 15 times, ELP 10 or 12 times, etc.

BeBop Deluxe, Gentle Giant, King Crimson, Nektar, etc.

The Genesis records especially hold up incredibly well, same with some Yes stuff.

I don't listen all that often but when I do i'm always surprised how much I still dig this stuff

  8. There's a scene in the Wilcofilm (I Am Trying To Break Your Heart) bonus clips where Jay talks about hearing songs he played on at a Starbucks and trying to get free coffee because of it, they didn't go for it.

    --Mike

    awesome

  9. "notice I'm playing both the black keys and the white keys at the same time, a lot of guys just play either the blacks or the whites, I'm one of the first to switch it up."

  10. anybody catch the band on Letterman last night?

kind of a lifeless sugar magnolia ... that ended at the fake ending, before the whole sunshine daydream bit

hate seeing them reduced to being so mundane ... three-minute pop song and out of there, but i guess that's all you can ask for on network TV

  11. I can't seem to get into Gram's solo work (again, I have the combo CD). I love one or two songs and find the rest that to be kinda boring.

wow, good to hear somebody else say this ... I've always felt this way but haven't heard anybody else admit it

it's like you're just supposed to foam at the mouth over his solo stuff, no questions asked

    it's overrated

  12. Hey nice job A-Man with all the links and such.

On another note just received my copy of the 2-14-68 (Road Trips). Friggin sweeeeeeet! This is yet another example of Primal Dead, you can just hear the acid dripping through this one. Also got the Hartford 77 set, thats also pretty great. I would highly reccomend both

I'm going to celebrate this thread by listening to Sept. 20, 1970, acoustic set on the way to work tomorrow

  13. Hi folks,

I'm new to this forum so sorry if I should have posted this somewhere else.

Anyone else here from Philly and going to the show in Wilmington, and want to take the R2 train together? I am carless... it says the concert venue is only 1 mile from the train station, but I still am not really into wandering around Wilmington alone. Get in touch w/ me at notfortheseasons [at] gmail.com. Thanks!

hey linzer ... just be careful because the last northbound R2 leaves wilmington at 10:48 pm

    septa R2 sked: http://septa.org/service/sched/pdfs/R2MHW.pdf

no clue when the show will start/end, but keep that in mind

there is also an 11:36 amtrak ... looks like that's the last north-bound train of the night

  14. I met Steve at a NAMM show when I was 16 and relatively new to the guitar.

He was just walking down the aisle, and the exchange went something like this:

    "Steve Morse?"

    "Yes?

"Wow. I'm a really big fan.

    (smiling) "Hey! Thanks! You play?"

"Yeah, but I'm not very good."

    "No?"

"Not as good as I want to be."

"Do you practice with a metronome?"

    "No."

"Well, that is the number one piece of advice that I can give to you, is to practice with a metronome. You have anywhere to be now?"

    "No."

Come on; I'm going to the Ernie Ball booth. You wanna take a little walk with me? We'll talk about guitar a bit."

He gave me a little technique advice and just told me about being a working musician.

One of the nicest people that I have ever met. He had no need to be so cool to me... some random, starry-eyed kid on the showroom floor, and yet, he kinda took me under his wing for a few minutes.

    So cool.

    that is awesome
