brief set this morning at world cafe live ... they were ok ... a few of the songs really, really dragged ... the uptempo tunes were fun ... the guitar player has the rick danko thing down pat ... these guys have really studied the band ... ok stuff & the new record was on sale ... i picked it up and will give 'em a shot, but live they were underwhelming
loved marianne faithful's set
by the way ... marc ribot is playing with marianne faithful now ... the guy is flat-out astonishing

saw them late 80s in philly ... one of the loudest bands i've ever seen
love their records ... live, the great melodies and songs were overwhelmed by the sheer volume and distortion

Much interesting debate here --
So what about Madonna -- I mean, c'mon. Marketing genius, yes. A few catchy tunes, but really. Is Prince in? I barely pay attention but the Cleveland Plain Dealer has been running articles every day for weeks.
What about Sonic Youth? Are they eligible yet?
Call me in 2019 when Wilco gets in. Or is eligible.
Madonna had more than a few catchy tunes. really opened a lot of doors for a lot of women artists. I'm not a huge madonna fan by any means, but i do think tracks like borderline and like a prayer are better than the best tracks by half the artists already in

Duane Jarvis, brilliant musician and songwriter, died yesterday after a long battle with cancer.
If you haven't heard his own terrific records, you've definitely heard his work.
Duane recorded five terrific solo records and played with so many artists - Dwight Yoakam, Matt Keating, John Prine, Giant Sand, Dave Alvin and many many more - and his songs have been recorded by a litany of greats, including Lucinda Williams, Peter Case and Amy Rigby. He was even a member of the DiVinyls and before that the Odds once upon a time. Amazing, lyrical guitarist. Just a beautiful player.
here's a touching obit from The Tennessean: http://www.tennessean.com/article/20090401...5/ENTERTAINMENT

Cry for a Shadow, the Beatles
love it
only pure instrumental the Beatles ever did? Flying had vocals, just not words!

my parents took me probably to a dozen Pete Seeger concerts when i was a kid & there was nothing like it
every single person in the audience would sing along, harmonize ... everybody knew all the words & was a part of the music ... was very cool
pete had an amazing voice back then and was an incredible banjo picker
great memories

Fixed it.
drunken posting isn't what turned me off about DTS
it was all the bragging about all the drunken posting
like everybody was trying to impress bob or the heed or somebody with how drunk they were
sad

Which is what you'll have to be to enjoy any Circus Devils album.
fixed
actually ...
Which is what you'll have to be to enjoy any Robert Pollard album since From a Compound Eye. -
it's already a topic on a couple of other boards i frequent.
have they taken a respite on the GBV message board from bragging about how drunk they are to talk about this?

Obviously something only available "under the counter" in John Deere stores.
i remember reading that it is actually some sort of device on a tractor
either way ... incredible song
live tractor rape chain was about as good as pop music's ever gotten for me

i'd have to agree on the colin hay. saw him about 4 or 5 years ago and the taste of minnesota. he played before rick springfield. so 99% of the people in the audience were there to see rick (complete with 'jesse's girl' t-shirts.). besides colin's great music, he ripped on these people quite a bit. i could've done without colin's wife spinning around like a hippy at a phish show.
rick springfield is great
i'd love to see him

I hung out in the RCMH lobby instead.
what is the "RCMH" lobby?
and why does everybody keep using abbreviations i have no clue about??!!?!?!

The Symphony is much less a visual experience, though. You're there to hear it more than to see it.
Part of the enjoyment of a rock & roll concert is the manor in which it is delivered. At least for me.
i love that when it's genuine, but if that's not what the artist is all about, i have no problem with a guy who does things the way jay does. just stands there and performs. if i dig the music, i don't need all the jumping around & chatting with the crowd. that's who the guy is & if he changed to make people happy it wouldn't ring true

I must admit that Sun Volt was pretty underwhelming. They played the final show at Tramps in NYC, which you'd think would call for a big celebration of the place. It was billed as the final concert. It must have been around the second album, both which I really liked at the time. The music was great, but it was as if there were X's taped to the stage because they didn't move one inch from where they were each standing the entire night. And I couldn't believe that the band didn't say a single thing to the crowd, not even a hello or to acknowledge the closing of the venue. The whole thing gave the impression of a lack of energy and emotion. Strange show.
that's jay
you go into it knowing he's not going to talk - except for the nightly "hey, how's everybody doing?" - and he's not going to jump around and he's really not going to do much of anything except play a bunch of freaking incredible songs
it's good enough for me
when you go see the symphony, they don't talk to the crowd and they don't jump around the stage, but everybody seems to enjoy the music

just find the set list of any show on that tour and it'll be exactly the same
jay rules ... but he ain't big on changing things up in the live show
hey ... wow ... drown again
