  1. This may have been the best Jeff show that I've ever attended. (Sorry for the delay, but a one hitter wasn't the culprit!  ;)~  ).

The singing was great. The sound was great. The crowd was silent during the songs and robust with applause in between. Jeff was clearly having fun from the get go. Jeff laughed off a lyric flub during ITMWLY but it was still awesome. The crowd did start barking out requests during the encore, but that's not much of a surprise.

Some musical highlights for me were:

Vocals on You and I, Reservations and Let's Go Rain. The latter in which he evoked the crowd to sing a limited 2-line chorus. This seems like it will be a fun song if it is played in regular rotation.

Acoustic guitar work on Bull Black Nova and Laminated Cat were just about perfect. Born Alone 'harmonics' are always pleasing.

After Hummingbird while Jeff was looking at the setlist on the side table I muttered quietly 'nailed it..' from the front row. This got me a quick look, and then a smile. He did nail it!

No setlist available at the soundboard to take a photo. Just the piece of paper on the stage side table. That was removed very quickly. I was hoping to take a photo of it. I looked like a football coach's playlist. The top 2/3 were two vertical columns and the bottom 3rd was written horizontally..

FM setlist was close except song #2:

    Via Chicago

Nope ?  ( This needs to be edited. )

    IATTBYH

    Bombs Above

    New Madrid

    Lost Love

    Hummingbird

    You and I

    Passenger Side

    Let's Go Rain

    Laminated Cat

    Bull Black Nova

    Reservations

    Jesus, Etc.

    Born Alone

    ITMWLY

    Encore:

    Misunderstood

    California Stars

    Theologians

    Handshake Drugs

    A shot in the Arm

    Banter Corner:

I think Jeff's first comments were after IATTBYH.  He declared that it was nice to be playing in a church and to quote as best I can, "It's nice to be be playing in a church, I don't think that I ever have. I'm now a Jew. I converted for my kids and wife's (Jeff word..) materna-lineage..  I think it's important to be on the home team when the shit hits the fan. And from what I learned in my time being a Jew: the shit is definitely going to hit the fan!".

According to Jeff,  evidently the entire entourage was busted at the Border for a small amount of marijuana. Although the weed wasn't his, they all got busted. And now he's not sure he can relate to the crowd being an ex-con..AND after the rousing applause for the masterful whistling that brought Hummingbird to a crescendo,  he accredited his talents to the time he spent in the Hoosegow. This crime story seems like it might be trending in the Canadian run. And let's hope it gets even more entertaining than it is already. Jeff claimed that he was soo happy when they let him Ouut. ( Out: Canadian-talk, eh?). Also, he requested some arrest photos that he could send home to the family, because they wouldn't believe this shit!

Jeff joked that because if anybody had heard a good song to their liking that they should call it a night. You know, leave now and come out ahead. And if you're still here than you must've not heard anything that you have liked!!  what gives..

Mind you this was Jeff that had a smile on his face.

Some funny banter before Theologians in the encore was a heckle for The Long Cut to which Jeff said you will be waiting a long time for that, like a few more years until I return to Hamilton. And the next heckle was for Theologians. To which Jeff said that seems like a really appropriate song for this location!...

Looking forward to a Roadcase recording.

    This show was incredible.

  2. Damn, vibes to Scott and his family.

I recently unearthed pics I took from a Wilco show at 4th & B in 2002 (Donna you once told me you were at this show too, right?) - the Minus 5 opened and spilled out to the sidewalk at the end of the night playing 4 or 5 songs in the San Diego night. It was magical.

(I don't recall taking these pics, I stumbled across them last week in my Yahoo account)

Awesome photos!     We love you, Scott!

  3. I marvel with every performance of Locator. Both solo and Wilco. It continues to get better and better... Perhaps a detailed review is imminent and I'd be happy to add onto that. A comedic moment included Jeff's sister sneaking up on him, in the past, onstage and spooking him while he was 'Rocking out'. Aside from some echo/reverb issues on the Nels side, the air was crisp. Very clean sound. From the 3rd row, you could hear JT's shoe tapping the floor. And that probably aired through the entire room. It's difficult to gauge the capacity of the Foellinger Great Hall vs. the capacity for the Krannert Center overall. Or perhaps challenging to my observation. The Krannert Center is listed at with of 2000+... Although the crowd could've been more raucous in general, it was seated show and you could've heard a pin drop during each and every song. That was fantastic.

  4. This year was the best one yet!

What a great time..  :badger  :badger

    I took the survey.

Best in show other than Wilco: Kevin Morby.

Suggestions to improve: Same as last survey, extend the shuttle to Williamstown motels first and foremost. And also to bring back the lobster mac n cheese and make it a staple in the Courtyard C menu. It was incredibly delicious in 2015.

  5. Joe, if all goes according to plan (and when does it ever, really?) Sandy and I are planning to go over to the Clark for a couple of hours on Thursday, then head over to Mass MoCA to check out the exhibits before closing time. Let's stay in touch.

Sounds like a great idea, Diane. I'll give you a shout as soon as I land in Albany.  Appx 12:45pm.

  6. I hadn't planned a VC meeting table this year, but maybe we can meet and grab a table on the deck above Courtyard C.

This sounds good, Donna. I suppose I'll you there about 4:30 Friday afternoon for starters..

Hi all, I'm Joe and I'll be attending with my cousin Jim. We'll arrive from Chicago early Thursday afternoon. Looking forward to meeting old friends and new.

In 2015, I was looking forward to seeing the Van Gogh exhibit at The Clark Art Institute on the way out of town, the Monday after SSF. But the The Clark is closed on Mondays until July. This baffles me with the certain surge of tourists that SSF offers.

I have a decent chance of making it to The Clark this year for the current Picasso exhibit on Thursday although the museum closes at 5pm. Otherwise, onward to North Adams!

    Woot!

  7. Joe, I'm just hoping that the weather cooperates with the scheduling!

Logistics, weather and scheduling. Let's hope for the best!

Opening with Misunderstood's opening lyric of," Back in my old neighborhood" is as appropriate and awesome as the Friday's Request Show opener of the Boys Are Back In Town... good times.

  8. How is this possible? I literally just fast forwarded on DVR his performance on Jimmy Fallen from a few weeks ago solely to watch his performance only 10 minute ago...RIP and thanks, Chris..

Thanks for all of the paint-peeling vocals that only you could provide!!! I hope that you will have a legacy of stauch voters that vote in the spirit of ideals that were among your's.

  9. Another excellent review, Bbop. Thank you.

It's so amazing how every solo benefit show is different and each a treasured experience.

While Friday's show was very neat and clean performance with a wonderfully attentive audience, I can't say that it was better than Saturday. Certainly, Saturday's show was going to be more rowdy with more hecklers for requests. Perhaps any flaws in Saturday's show were turned out to be wonderful intimate moments for those in the front of the theater and at time comic reliefs. I certainly had a great time.

Saturday's show was particularly interesting when Jeff took time time to applaud Bbop...:

"The number one fan... He's seen us more times than we've played...  In fact, soo prevalent on certain tours Wilco reached out for his services, it would work out just on logistics...;!

Jeff commented on the delight of receiving Bbop's letter mailed from New Zealand (Auckland?) to Wilco after the tour:

    "Loved your show last night!!"....

  10. This lineup is simply amazing and I couldn't be happier!  :bounce8

Any of you unfamiliar with Kevin Morby may want to spend some time now getting familiar. You are in for a real treat. Try "Singing Saw"! Mesmerizing music.

Thanks for suggesting Kevin Morby. I just watched the Tiny Desk Concert and I loved it. I have 'Singing Saw" on order!

  11. I'm not a fan of Peter Wolf either. He's opening up for Tom Petty this summer. A friend of mine saw him at the local music venue down the road from me (Tupelo Music Hall, Londonderry, NH). He loves his music.

I wonder if Peter Wolf and the Midnight Travelers might be the opening band for Friday night. It seems like a veteran band has been utilized in the past for this slot. If so, I'm hoping that Kelly Hogan will be part of the Midnight Travelers. Kelly has provided vocals on a Peter solo record lately and it would be great to see her perform at Solid Sound! In the last few months, I've enjoyed her performing with Andrew Bird, Drive By Truckers and Alejandro Escovado/Minus 5. I'm looking forward to seeing her band The Flat Five opening for Wilco at the Chicago Theater on Wednesday!

  12. It just hit me that the new run of shows announced yesterday are billed as part of the Schmilco tour, as opposed to the four night run in Chicago being billed as Winterlude. I guess what I'm thinking is that even though the newly announced dates include multiple consecutive nights at one theater, we shouldn't expect as much set list variation at Schmilco shows as at Winterlude shows. I don't think the difference in the names of the shows is accidental.

Although it should be noted that the faux foliage stage has not yet been presented in Chicago, Diane. I'm certainly hoping to have a chance to view it and yet encounter four individual Winterlude shows. And also, I'm not sure that the full Star Wars tour opening setlist was ever played in Chicago in a theater. Even though it premiered in Chicago at the Pitchfork Festival.

  13. Just got a heads up about this place from the place we stay in Williamstown. Looks like a fun stop for #solidsound17! http://www.onlyinyourstate.com/massachusetts/canopy-walk-ma/

This looks great! Thanks for sharing.

I will try to add this onto the SSF Thursday or Monday to-do list.

Last year I made the mistake of waiting until Monday to check out the Van Gogh exhibition at The Clarke as a last thing to do before leaving town. Unfortunately, the Clarke was closed Mondays in June. Hopefully, this changes. At least every other year.

  14. Pretty excited for this. Mt. Tam is one of my favorite places in the world, but I've never seen a show at Mountain Theater. And September is such a great time to be up there.

Me, too. Mount Tam is one of my favorite places. And after hiking over an empty wooded Mountain Theater numerous times years ago, it's pretty amazing to think Wilco will be playing here. Such a wonderful location.

  15. Wow, loads of actual hate for You Never Know, easily my preferred song of that album and only one of about two or three I even like. Having said that, the performance of it is horribly flat. I've never been more disappointed in an album by anyone, ever than this one.

Wait a minute here... How is it possible to have a preferred song on an album in which you have never Ever been more disappointed?
