  1. pulled 9th row orch 2 for portland, maine. how did everyone else do?
I got 8th row orch 2 for Portland. I swear I lost 3 rows trying to figure out if that last letter in my stupid captcha was an "H" or an "X" - can't complain though!!
  2. You can call a taxi; they don't just drive up and down the street looking for passengers. Williamstown is not too far to travel by cab.

There's tons of bike parking at Mass Moca, too. Although you risk getting ticketed for BUI, you most likely won't kill anyone if you run them down! :cheers

  3. hey, i was looking @ the photo assignments for prefixmag today and noticed someone already claimed SSF...turns out it was you!

    Sorry, Tim.

I got an email from Deb yesterday with the announcement and responded with a request. I never put it together that you were who you are until I saw this post and looked at your site. I was so envious of you last year because I missed most of the festival waiting in line 2.5 hours for each of the headlining shows, just to get close enough to shoot with the gear I was allowed to bring in (didn't have a pass). When they announce the lineup, there will probably be more passes to be had from the other bands' promoters, no?

    Josh

  4. The Alpaca Connection is definitely worth a stop for something warm and fuzzy. :thumbup And for breakfast, head to the Original Pancake House on Canyon Blvd, next to the Marriott.

As for the show, I would never have imagined an entirely different set from the night before, incredible.

Can't wait to see your pics Josh!

What a coincidence, I was just about to post them!

It's too bad Jeff was lit entirely from those two lights above and behind him. Between that and security making us shoot a mile from the stage, they aren't my best shots. At least they turned on some lights when the Handsome Family played!

Jeff Tweedy and The Handsome Family, Boulder Theater 01-08-11

As for the shows, I loved both of them. The unique setlists were awesome and took care of a couple of never-heard-live tunes for me (inluding She's a Jar :yes). I just can't believe I missed the amazing encore Saturday night. As it was, I made my plane with only 10 minutes to spare (and it would have been closer if not for the rental car shuttle driver coming back after seeing me running after him)! I grabbed a photo of the setlist before the show, but didn't look at it until I was on the plane. I saw that there was an entire song typed out on a piece of paper to the right of the list. When I zoomed in, I realized it was the lyrics to "Fake Plastic Trees" :o

There are few things I hate more in life than having a show ruined by other members of the crowd and it sucks to read there was a lot of that. I was extremely lucky to randomly get seats in the second row both nights (one seat apart!) and thankfully didn't experience any crowd distractions. I guess that makes up for missing the encore!

  5. Had 2nd row the last time he played the Boulder Theater in '06. You're gonna love it--he'll be about 5 feet away from you max.

That's awesome - I love when the rows start really close. We had the first row in DC (had to get there at 4:00 and freeze our asses off), and it was literally 1.5ft from the stage. When he played Acuff Rose off the PA, we were all standing and he was just inches from our faces. I literally could have tied his shoelaces together.

  6. I recorded the show from about 3 rows in front of the soundboard (24bit/48kHz source). I'm well-versed in all kinds of tech (those bits of extraneous HTML code in my previous replies notwithstanding - that was my iPad's fault), but I know nothing about mastering audio. If anyone wants to take a crack at it, they are welcome to it - just shoot me a PM. If you want a sample to determine if it's worth it given the other sources available, let me know.

Thanks everyone else who taped - downloading now.

  7. I went with the two-pronged attack - I went for Saturday while my wife tried Friday for me. I wound up getting Section A center, second row, for both nights! This (almost) makes up for getting shut out of the Bowery, since the Bowery is about 2,000 miles closer to home than Boulder.

  8. charlottesville got taped by 2 folks. we recorded from the 5th row and I'm working on that right now. Have to leave for work so will try to get up tonite. 2nd taper ran from the balcony

I have taped on average 75+ shows a year for over 10 years and probably taped Wilco/Jeff 20+ times. for what its worth, my advice to anyone wanting to tape wilco/jeff, is not to call the venue. I don't see any benefit to it. 99% of these people have no fucking clue what taping is, many of the ones in the venue are volunteers, etc.... I mean go ask 10 strangers off the street about taping and none of them think that shit is legal, lol. Instead I would print out a copy of the band's policy from the website and have that with you. If you get any hassle for your gear, firmly -- but politely -- explain to the venue staff that the band permits it and that you have the official policy to show them. If that doesn't work, ask for their supervisor and keep asking until you get someone who can call shots. have that person call back for Stan, the "front of house engineer," and he will definitely go to bat for you and explain to them that you can bring in your gear. If the venue is adamant about no stands being allowed -- as happens in *some* sit down theaters -- you may have to hand hold, clamp a short extension pole to your seat or wear a hat as we did last night. I would ask them to contact Stan as the last resort though after you have politely explained the policy and tried all your available "jedi mind tricks." A few years back when wilco played the Myrtle Beach House of Blues it took over 30 minutes to get it resolved, which brings up the next point. You need to get there way early if you're going to tape. Stan obviously can't take the time to help you if he's at the board waiting for the band to come on

All of these are excellent points and I'm sure would be the best way ro handle it in any rational venue. But the Tarrytown staff wasn't going to listen to anyone. When they made me put away my tripod, Stan gave me the tape to fasten the mic to the pole - that didn't sway them in the least. The worst part is that I was there very early and got all set up without any interference. Then somebody suddenly decided to arbitrarily invent a "rule" about 4 minutes before curtain.

After that experience, I was gun-shy about charlottesville so I didn't bring my tripod. But the staff was much more organized and everyone was aware that taping was allowed - they even announced it over the PA. I used some gaffer's tape to attach my recorder to a foam pad and managed to get it chest-high and pointed at the PAs by putting it on top of my coat which was in my lap. Of course, I had to sit motionless all night and couldn't clap, but it was worth it as I listen to it now. Awesome setlist and I'll never forget hearing "God" - one of my all-time favorite songs.

I just pray that somebody got DC. I loved that show too and it was amazing being in the front row (which is about a foot-and-a-half from the stage at the Lincoln).

  9. I thought your other post said you did tape the Tarrytown show... I'm guessing you went stealth after this. Sounds like you ran into someone who think s/he is the sole protectorate of their workplace. Clearly, the posted signs and spoken announcements did not mention any ban against audio taping, which often is mentioned in the music hall announcements. The same thing happened when Wilco allowed photography, even SLRs. Some staff would say it's OK, others at the same venue would later tell you you couldn't, no matter that you had an approving email from Wilco's manager in your hand.... Sigh....In any event, there's at least one other recording which might surface in due time.

Yes, I did have to go stealth. It sounds surprisingly good for a recording made from a Zoom H1 stuck to an arm rest with masking tape loops (except for the fact that everyone leaving my aisle managed to knock it off. Coincidently enough, I'm listening to it right now on the train to Charlottesville. I didn't want to risk going stealth in DC because I was front row center. I hope somebody got it, though. That's a show I absolutely have to hear again.

  10. I called the Tarrytown Venue and asked about taping.  The woman who answered the phone was obviously aware of Tweedy's policies and said I could absolutely record, just no video or still photography,  I got there and started setting up my rig and a nice, middle-aged usher said it's cool that (Tweedy) lets us tape and asked if I would be putting it up on btetree.  He just said to make sure I kept my tripod out of the aisle,  The next person who approached me said she didn't think I could tape, despite my explanation that the artist allows it and I called ahead,.  She went off to investigate and came back and told me I just couldn't  use a tripod.  I started fastening the mic to a pole that was conveniently by my seat, and just as I finished, yet another person approached me and said absolutely no audio taping.

Today, I called the Lincoln and they said absolutely no taping, regardless of the artist's rules.  I didn't even bother.

I'll have to give Charlottesville  a call tomorrow and see what they say (not that I can rely on it)

  11. good show with Jeff in a fine mood when someone yelled W. loves you; he said he doesn't know him! sadly, looks as if i lost the first 45 minutes of his set for the archives. did someone record??? this hall in Tarrytown has THE most amazing sound. quiet audience should make killer boot!

Agreed, fantastic show with amazing acoustics (se my note about taping below). Plus, Jeff could not have been more friendly and accommodating the few of us who met him behind his van right after the show. I've been carrying around a print of a shot I took of Jeff that I love and a silver paint marker for literally months - solid sound, Philadelphia folk festival, you name it. Finally he was right in front of me and I took out the photo and my pen was missing. I couldn't believe it! I was emptying my pockets and handing stuff to strangers to hold like a complete spaz. To this minute, I still haven't found it. I had a silver sharpie paint. He took a few pictures with people and then just said, "why don't I just sign it in black over the white guitar? I said that would be great and he did, I was so touched by his patience that I gave him another one of my favorite photos. He was very appreciative and I said "I'll see you in DC." Here's a before and then a quick snap of the autographed shot:

    TAPING:

Oh, and I did tape the show. There's a couple of glitches (people knocked over my recorder twice when leaving the aisle, but to my ears, it sounds pretty good and just needs some mixing. I was going to see if Brennan wanted to help out with that because I've never taped a show before and wouldn't know how to go about mixing and checksums and all that.. Anyway, I played it in my car coming home and it was pretty nice. I recorded it as a 48khz 24bit wav, so there should be a lot of room to play with getting the levels right.

  12. So you play, Josh? I'll expect your multitalented self on our next tribute album. :thumbup

Oh, I play alright - singing is another story though. I only sing when there's nobody in a 50ft radius. If I lived in the city, cats would throw shoes at ME.

  13. Butterfly is in G (no capo). Basic chords being G, C, Em, with a D thrown in the second line. It makes the walk down from G to Em after the last chorus much easier...

I'm with Lance on this one. The D chord only shows up twice when Jeff plays it: on the words "clothes" and "stared" (up at the stars). Depending on your vocal range, you might find it easier playing the same chords with the capo on the 6th fret (believe it or not).

  14. I have sold two of the Charlottesville tickets, but there are still two available, and probably 1 or 2 more. (I had 3 friends trying for tickets during the presale, and we all got lucky!)

The two that are definitely for sale are right orchestra, Row H, pretty far right (but it's a small venue). The two I'm not sure of yet are center orchestra, Row L. $83.50 for a pair, which is face value + fees. PM me or email me at dkyrus@gmail.com.

    You have a PM/Email :thumbup

  15. The first thing I went to do when I woke up this morning was go to set calendar alerts for the pre-sales - but now all mention of the shows are gone from wilcoworld.net (save for a scrolling news item that takes you nowhere).

Did anyone make a note of the days/times for the pre-sales? I'm pretty sure the Bowery show was 10/27 (and I'm guessing 10:00 am). Thanks.
