  1. Very nice. Where was this held. and are you in any of the pics? Pat's hair looks less fluffed up than usual!

It was at the Impossible Project's New York space - 425 Broadway. Link

I'm not in any of the shots, though I might have snapped a quick iPhone selfie or two with Nels and Pat in the background. Like I said, it was really laid back so nobody was posing with the guys for photos, etc. Pat signed everyone's book and was very gracious. Nels bought a couple of books and got them signed, too (you can see Pat signing his in one of the shots).

  2. Josh, Brennan says thanks! (I'm his mom) :) And we both think you take stunningly gorgeous photos! WOW. :worship

Thanks Brennan and Brennan's Mom! I have more to add from Wilco and Tweedy from Solid Sound, as well as some from the Philadelphia Folk Festival. I just can't keep up. Check back from time to time at My Site

  3. Went to the fest with my wife and three children. Wife and I had camped at the fest 4-5 times going back twenty years. Really special to see Tweedy there as he is one of our favorites. Mountain Bed was very moving for my wife and I and everyone in the family enjoyed the set. Memorable interaction between my youngest son, Brain (5) and Jeff after So Much Wine. Jeff talking about the dunk tank at Solid Sound and Brian yells out of nowhere..."You broke your foot". We are in the front row and Jeff says, "what did you say?" Brian is shocked that Tweedy is talking to him and won't repeat himself, so I say it for him. Jeff says "I broke my foot? No wonder he is embarassed." Everyone laughs and at this point Brian begins to cry thinking that everyone is laughing at him. Jeff trys to console after Hummingbird and tells him something like, "it's OK little boy you're at a Folk Festival having a good time with your family and everyoneone here loves you, life is good" Crowd goes crazy particularly those around us. He even offers to play a song for Brain and closes the set with Shot in the Arm as per Brain's request. Wound up getting to meet Jeff after the show and as my oldest son and daugher approch him Jeff says to them "is your brother OK?" He apologizes to me, very gracious, and I assure him that all is well. We laugh a bit, get some autographs and pictures, and I thank him for all of the music. Would love to get a copy of the recording, anyone?

I was there as well and that was such a touching moment - he was so genuinely sorry that he had upset your son. Jeff also seemed to be in very good spirits - I've never seen him smile that much during the songs. It was also a funny moment when those of us who were at solid sound realized he flubbed "Muzzle of Bees" again and called him on it. Speaking of bees, when people began shouting requests, he feigned being offended, saying that it meant that we didn't like the setlist to that point. He said "c'mon, I'm risking my life up here," explaining that there was a "very aggressive bee" flying around him as he played. Overall, I thought it was an incredible performance as usual. This was my first time hearing "Wait Up" live, so that was an amazing treat, as was hearing "So Much Wine" - even if I just heard it last week.

As for the festival itself, I, too had incredible difficulty figuring out the ticketing system. There were $8 tickets that were described on the order page as both "general admission" and "reserved" (for the same ticket), $80 tickets, combo tickets.... I couldn't make any sense of it. All I knew was that Jeff was playing on Saturday so I bought a Saturday Combo ticket figuring it would cover it. Oddly, when I printed out the ticket yesterday, it said:

    Philadelphia Folk Festival

    Opening Night

    Sunday, August 22, 2010

First, opening night was Friday, the 20th. Second, I didn't buy (or want) a ticket for Sunday. There was some small text on the stub that said "Sat-Combo" and, sure enough, it all worked out, but it was all so confusing. Had I known about the "friend of the festival" tickets, I would have bought one because I was hoping to get a photo signed that I took back in April and was carrying it around the festival protecting it with my life after the near-catastrophe with Nels' autograph from sold sound. Oh well, maybe next time. Here's the shot:

Although it was not your typical Wilco crowd and many were not familiar with the songs, I was incredibly appreciative that they remained respectfully quiet during his set. I did have to suppress the urge to participate in the appropriate moments because very few people around me were "in the know." All told, I had a great time and I'm glad I stalked Jeff from North Adams to Schwenksville, even though it took me 25 minutes to locate my keys when I got back to my car in the middle of a dark field at 1:00 AM and it took me about 7 hours to get home today (instead of 3) thanks to the buckets of rain and the shore traffic! I would love to stay up and process my photos, but tomorrow is another day. Here's a test shot for now....

  5. Nice photo, Josh! I hope your Nels print fared okay. ;)

Wow, I'm back at work now, which means ... I have a moment to post in this thread. The whole weekend was wonderful, but what stands out for me from the Saturday night show is "Laminated Cat" electric, with the full band. Holy shit, was it great.

Actually, the Nels autograph wasn't as bad as it looked. I used a blower on the paint chips and carefully cleaned the streaks/smudges and it came out looking pretty darn nice. I felt like I was restoring a Rembrandt!

  6. I had such an incredible time this weekend that it already feels like a dream. Thanks to all who helped me hold my spot, etc. because my friend bailed on me at the last minute. Thanks to some great people, I never felt alone. Since the shows themselves have left me speechless, I thought I'd share my photos (for those of you that didn't get my card). I have been processing all day and it will literally take me weeks to get through them all, but I have some early favorites up at jsarnerphoto.com - keep checking back. I also put a little taste below.

Lastly, a special thanks to Nels and John for signing my photos, to my good friends who sat on line and sprinted across the field with me (on both nights), viatroy for being so kind when I lost her ticket (and so excited when I found her another), my friends who gave me some water when I REALLY needed it during Tweedy's set, and the wonderful person who is going to send me a copy of my dream recording - just when I thought I would never find it - you know who you are :worship

Enjoy the pictures - see you next year (or sooner),

    Josh

  7. I may regret asking this question - but, what's the story? I don't recall such a thing.

I'll have to retract my statement for now - I saw it referred to in another post that I can't find at the moment (as a lawyer, I should know better than to post hearsay!) :blush

I hope that I misread or misinterpreted the post because, as I said, that would be a shame. Sorry if I have offended anyone.

Hey look at this cool picture I took of Nels Cline!

    (Trying some misdirection here)

  8. were tapers present?

At least one - there was a nice rig set up in the right section of the $100 seats. I was so completely blown away by the show that I introduced myself to the taper afterward and asked if he'd be posting it anywhere - I mentioned it was the best show I'd ever seen. He said he's probably put it out there. That was before I discovered that there had been some sort of rift on this board between the tapers and the other members. It's such a shame that happened - I'd give anything to hear that performance again (and not just because my request was played!). It was perfect in every way.

  9. So what was the deal with the Single Ladies thing?

I thought it was funny, though I didn't get the actual joke. It was obviously some sort of running gag, considering Jeff had the lyrics printed out and nearby.

Someone's request on the list taken before the show was "either Ashes of American Flags or Single Ladies." Everyone expected the former, but he must have printed out Single Ladies when he saw that request. It was also hilarious that he had to "google [his] own song" ("Shakin' Sugar/ Alone).

  10. Great fucking picture!

Thanks! I wanted to bring my real camera but I called the Vic and they said small point-n-shoots only so I didn't bother. But when I stepped outside after being completely blown away by the performance, I had to grab something to preserve the moment (I have a horrific memory - hence the desperate plea for the tape!). I snapped that shot just as my iPhone battery was going dead and did a little editing on the plane ride home. I hope there is a more liberal camera policy in Montclair, NJ or Hartford, CT - like there was in Wappingers Falls and Beacon, NY (see horribly compressed, forum-compliant shots attached):

  11. Glad you made it from NYC and got your request in (nice one, btw...you're Josh, I assume?) despite all of the snafus. :thumbup

Yes, I'm Josh - good memory! Although I felt more like "even Steven" since all the snafus worked out for me. In fact, my first request (Gun) had already been picked so I changed it. As it turned out, Gun wasn't played.

As for the recording, I introduced myself to one of the tapers after the show and pretty much begged him to post it when he's done with it. He said he'd "probably put it out there somewhere" or something to that effect. I don't spend a lot of time on this board, but I've seen his name around here and he's put out some exquisite recordings in the past. I hope he is kind enough to share it (and that those of you that know him will encourage him to do it). I would be forever grateful - for many reasons, this show is one memory I would love to be able to revisit for a long time to come. I'd even be happy to make a donation toward all the effort and overhead (a LOT more than Jeremy's $5!! :cheers)

  12. Had an incredible time at this show. I flew in from NYC just to see it (an impulse booking) and managed to attend despite everything conspiring against me. New York had a crazy wind storm and my original Saturday afternoon flight got canceled on Thursday night (which I didn't find out about until Friday afternoon). I got the last seat on another airline for a Saturday morning flight, which wound up being one of the few flights that got out of LaGuardia before the winds hit.

After all that, I was still there early enough to get my request played (Blasting Fonda) and had amazing seats among some really great (and quiet!) people.

I thought the setlist, the crowd interaction...Jeremy, all made this a perfect show. I'm praying the folks who were recording it are kind enough to share it soon (and not just because my name was mentioned 3 times!). This is only my second time seeing Tweedy solo and I was so disappointed when no recording of the other show ever surfaced (the Pete Seeger show in Beacon, NY).

The next morning my alarm clock didn't go off and I woke up at 9:30 for my 11:00 flight back to NY (10:30 boarding time). Thanks so much to the Comair crew that let me hitch a ride with them to the jetblue terminal - and to the TSA agents that didn't strip search me when my alarm clock FINALLY did start ringing.....as my luggage was being x-rayed!!! I guess luck was on my side in many ways for this trip. Definitely coming back next year!

Quick iPhone snap - maybe for my album art when (if) the torrent is released :pray

  13. I saw someone having trouble - must have been you. For future reference - what was the problem and how did you sort it?

Beautiful pictures. Makes me wonder why I even bother.

Thanks. I was told "no cameras with detachable lenses." That's a new one on me. I told the guy that the band allows and encourages still photography of all kinds and that I've never had a problem with that exact gear at other shows. I also said that I reviewed the posted security rules for the venue before coming (because I don't want to leave expensive equipment in my car) and that the rules said nothing about cameras. Finally, I just told told him that my lens was stuck on and I couldn't remove it.
