  1. They seem to be focused on one thing: If we don't pass Prop 8, your kids will be taught about gay marriage in school! There's also a No on 8 ad where the California Superintendent of Schools says that no, that will not happen, and then there are response ads to that one, saying that he's a liberal politician and a liar. Oy.

Several of the Yes on 8 ads are run in both English and Spanish, which is not odd in California, but this is definitely being pushed to Hispanics, in the hope that they'll be more conservative on this kind of a social issue. I'm very surprised at how many Yes on 8 signs I'm seeing, even in San Francisco, and I'm pretty worried that this might pass. There's a whole lot of state between here and LA. :no

Yep. my neighborhood (in a moderate area of Orange County - 50/50 dems & repubs) is full of "Yes on 8" signs, easily 10:1. The Catholic church is pushing it hard (including my parish), and a huge %age of hispanics in CA are catholic. I'm afraid it's going to win.

not sure if I saw these here first or not, but this stuff sickens me:

  3. I like my kid a lot, and he's smart and his friends and classmates are really good kids. That said, I couldn't really care

who they think should be president.

I guess it depends on how old your kids are. Mine are still very young, but if they were in their teens / HS age, I'd definitely be interested in hearing their perspective on things. Not that I'd necessarily agree with them (or consider their opinion to be well thought-out), but you never know. A bright & well-informed HS kid probably has a better grasp of what's going on in the world than a lot of adult voters out there.

  4. I respect what Nader has accomplished, but I don't think his runs for president are adding much luster to his legacy. It's been said here before, but where are the Naders and Gonzalezes of this world in the local elections?

I've often said that if Nader was serious about changing the way Washington works, he'd run for an office he could actually win - like a congressional representative or even US senator. These presidential runs are just for publicity, IMO. They're certainly not doing anything to advance the cause, especially this year.

  5. So ignoring all evidence to the contrary, all young people are racists because a couple of kids? Come the fuck on, man.

You'll have outliers in any group. But to the vast majority of young people, race isn't important. We are divided much more along class lines than anything.

calm down. I was merely pointing out that these two were in the demographic that you say (and I agree that) largely doesn't view race as a major issue. but there still are racists in that group - just as they are across all elements of society, across the country.

  6. Gallups "traditional" likely voter model now has an Obama with a 2 point lead. They seem fairly legit, although their "expanded" likely voter model has Obama at +7. Pew Research recently had Obama at +15. Polls are funny.

Gallup's traditional model largely assumes low turnout among young and minority voters. It also assumes that turnout will be roughly even between Dems and Repubs (as it was in 2004). If that happens, Obama's get out the vote campaign will be a huge failure - but evidence from early voting already suggests otherwise.

Oh really....then why did the ATF just break up a young skin-head group who was talking of assasinating of him? (And killing a bunch of blacks along with him.)

and I believe the two individuals caught were 18 & 20 yrs old.

  7. So is Ashley Todd going to be the next Joe The Plumber?

You know, tell a story, get a lot of national attention - and then once it comes out that the story you told was full of holes, still be used as a "symbol" of a story that should be told anyway.

Even though she wasn't beat up by a big, scary black man for being a McCain supporter, she could have been...

  8. If early voting is offered in your state, you should really try to vote that way. This is going to be a record-breaking election (turnout expected to be as high as 80% in some states) - election day will just be insane.

And, if you believe what's outlined here is legit, all the more reason to vote as early as possible to get any "irregularities" cleared up before it's too late.

  9. C'mon sweetheart - they do. We hear "this crucial point in history" and stuff like that ad nauseum every single election cycle. I feel personally that this election is up there, history-wise, but it's not really unique in that way.

I don't recall any talk like that in 1996 or 2000. Maybe it was there & I missed it.

  10. If the electoral college vote were awarded by congressional district, rather than the current winner-take-all for the entire state, I think that would go a long way toward making it seem like a true national election.

It currently makes no sense for Obama to spend time in TX or McCain to spend time in CA - but if they were fighting for congressional districts, you'd be certain to see Obama campaigning in Dallas or Houston and McCain campaigning in Orange County.

It would be very interesting to see how that would affect the overall electoral map - I'm sure one party would fare worse in this new model and therefore it's unlikely to ever happen.

  11. I'll be the voice of dissent and say that they have a point about the woman with the fastest time not running in the same group. It's a little different race if she's out front setting the pace. It is at least conceivable that the leaders of the elite group would have run differently if they were chasing someone in front of them rather than setting the pace themselves.

I agree. Distance running is as much about race strategy and mind games as it is pure athleticism. I'm sure she won't make this mistake next time.

That being said, you'd think they'd at least be able to give her an honorary award or something.

  12. I live around these sort of people, I'm sure my non-christian kid won't be allowed to play with their children when she gets older. She might put a spell on them or something.

No, she'll pray for them and their soulless, heathen of a mother. :frusty

  13. I'm a lifelong Catholic, attend every week, and can honestly say I have NEVER heard a priest mention a political party, let alone a specific candidate. I have heard a few sermons that discussed abortion, but NEVER in a context of anything political...it was always in the context of the church advocating sanctity of life and/or for church-goers to pray for babies and for mothers.

This is the 3rd parish I've been a member of in my lifetime, and it is the first time I've heard it put so blatantly. I think his line was something to the effect of "One party supports God's teachings. You should consider that on election day." This was after he talked about the tragedy of abortion and how all Catholics should do everything they can to protect the lives of the unborn.

I actually have no problem with a lot of what he said - it's his duty as a priest to advocate the Church's teachings and relate those teachings to our daily lives. And every 4 years, the presidential race becomes an important aspect of our lives, and we should use our moral beliefs (or, more generically, our sense of what's right and wrong) to inform our political decision. Where he crossed the line is when he stated that the Republican party was somehow the only party that supported God's teachings - and, by inference, the Democratic party was therefore against God. His view of morality came across as being severly myopic in that he did not account for the immorality of unnecessary wars, torture, poverty, lack of affordable healthcare, etc. in his views. It's all about abortion to him, nothing else matters.

  14. The Catholic church never said they want people to vote for McCain specifically. They never endorsed him as a candidate. They can urge parishioners to vote a certain way on certain issues, but they can't specifically endorse a party or candidate.

Our church has a "Vote no on proposal 2" sign out front, but they couldn't have a McCain or Obama sign out there. They could put a pro-life sign out there if they were so inclined.

Our church as always urged voters to look at the whole picture, unless you are a one issue (abortion) voter, then pro-life wins.

Our priest is walking the tightrope this election. While he legally can't tell us specifically who/what to vote for, he's all but saying Catholics have to vote for Republicans because of the abortion issue alone. If I had the time & desire to debate him about it, I'd love to hear him rationalize the other aspects of the republican plaform and explain to me how that jibes with the teachings of Christ.

  15. I actually think that this little thread in this little message board pretty closely approximates the electorate. I apologize if I left out anyone -- let me know and I'll edit with your preference.
