So... did anyone watch the Palin interview last night and come away with an improved opinion of her and her ability to step in for the presidency if anything should happen to McCain?
Aside from a very small number of right-wing politicians and paid pundits, I have yet to hear anyone speak well of her performance.
-
Wow, Palin came across worse than I thought she would. She really has no clue about foreign policy. Russia invaded Georgia unprovoked? And she didn't even know what the Bush Doctrine is?!? That's something her kids are probably reading about in their history books already.
This feels like some sick episode of 'are you smarter than a 5th grader?'
sad thing is, i doubt it matters to most voters. i'd like to think they care, but i doubt they will.

How depressing... "Spengler" from the Asia Times wrote it, so you know it must be true.

The Ebony Rhythm Budda (Michael Bland) is the best drummer I've ever seen/heard in person - so if he's still backing Pirner and the boys, you have to check them out for him alone.

took a few listens, but the Waits outtakes are cracking me up tonight

Just closed last week on a house out here in CA. my advice - avoid probate sales (unless you enjoy dealing with extra real estate agents, lawyers, conservators and judges). Our escrow was 60 days due to all the additional legal delays - and (at least here in CA) your sale isn't final until the probate court approves it, at which time someone else is allowed to offer the estate a better deal! thankfully, in this market, that almost never happens - but it's a nervewracking process regardless.
But the worst part about it is that probate sales are all "as-is" condition, so no matter what our inspector found, it was up to us to fix it (although they did take care of the big ticket items like termite fumigation & repairs). but it's been a major PITA.
Aside from that, assuming this is your first house, save much more cash than you anticipate for all the "homeowner" items that you'll need to buy that you probably didn't need as a renter (lawnmower, gardening tools, washer/dryer, fridge, etc.)
Once you pick a house, go to the neighborhood on a friday/saturday night and see how rowdy the neighbors are.
Try to plan for a 1-2 week gap between taking ownership and the actual move-in date... the best time to do stuff like painting/cleaning (esp. the garage) is before you move all your crap in.
Make a list, prioritize it, and don't get overwhelmed with all the crap you have to do now... I call mine the "Joy of Home Ownership List"
enjoy!

according to that list, the states with the best places to live are Texas (13), Minnesota (9) and New Jersey (9).

after the well joke, you can see an unsmiling Jim Norton saying "what?" or "why?"
yeah, saw that too - nice to see that not all of the comedians were on top of what was going on, too.

Then again, this poll was done by Zogby, and they haven't had the best track record this election cycle.
not sure if it's been mentioned here yet, but the best place I've found for tracking the race - by state-by-state polls and electoral college implications, not ultimately meaningless national polls - is http://www.fivethirtyeight.com
...and thay also have the race tightening significantly over the past few weeks.

He's seen as a stronger manager of the economy? Ok, we need to check the water supply; this is just lunacy. This is a guy who has admitted he doesn't know much about the economy and has said that our current economic problems are all in our heads. His former economic advisor, Phil Gramm, said we're in a "mental recession" and as a lawmaker and lobbyist was a major player in decreasing regulation in the housing and commodities markets which led to our current problems in the first place.
But Obama is just a celebrity like Britney Spears and Paris Hilton. Didn't you hear about that?

I like Ryan Stiles or Crispin Glover for Riff Raff.
I agree. And Meat Loaf is SO 70's... besides, Jack Black would make an AWESOME Eddie.

At first glance, I don't like their limited channel options. Do I pick rock, country, pop or avant garde? There are elements of each I like, and elements I despise.
I prefer the pandora model of seeding a channel with specific songs/artists you like and having the songlist based on that... but i'll give it a try today.
(everything plays fine for me, btw)

in case anyone still believes that Obama is going to raise their taxes...
this chart is effective because it give proportional space for each income bracket (the tiny slivers at the top are the ultra wealthy who will indeed have their taxes raised). the majority of us will see lower taxes under Obama than McCain.
